The nationalist party(KMT)finished the last Chinese feudalistic dynasty in 1911, and in a few years began a close co-operation with CCP until 1927 when the leader of KMT, Jiang Jieshi (representing the Chinese government - Republic of China) claimed that CCP was illegal and tried to arrest and kill the members of CCP around the country. Therefore, the first Chinese civil war broke out. When Japan invaded China all-sided in 1937, KMT had to start the second co-operation with CCP to fight Japan.

Its not just any movie, its a true story. There was an video interview with the captain who was the sole survivor of his company.
Basically his company was fighting some rear guard action to hold off the KMT and were told not to retreat unless the bugle sounded.
Of course it didn't since they were being sacrificed to hold off the KMT while the PLA retreated.
