@szeto400 Nope. We buy them separate. We have a great blog post with all sorts of links and products for you to pick what suits your tastes and budget. Just head over to BensRPGPile[dot]com.
@seven2eight2 Heh - it seems like one can never have enough flock choices. I always get a little worried I'm gonna inhale some of it and I'll have a bad chest x-ray 10 years from now. Tough to explain to the doc:)
Hey i was looking at some mini's and i remembered a game called warmachine and i thank the bases are the same size but im not sure but if they are you don't have to rebase them and they look great.
I've been rebasing and repurposing minis since about 2005. MageKnight works, HeroClix, HorrorClix and Heroscape all work quite well for various games and genres. As a matter of fact, WOTC/Hasbro did that in reverse when they bought Heroscape a couple years ago. They just based D&D minis onto Herscape bases. I also mod the minis extensively. making Sith Lords is really fun. I'm not a fan of flocking though.
@DarcMac I've seen some neat videos on guys modifying the minis (Frankenstein-like). Very cool - I just struggle with really tiny stuff (whether it's painting or glueing) so my hat's off to you.
@bensrpgpile2 Thank you. I'm really near-sighted, so I just remove my glasses and the tiny stuff I can see very well! LOL There are some real talented people out there better than me at painting. It's taken a few years of practice, but I'm getting better at it. My "chop-jobs" are where my best talents lay. Maybe I'll get a decent camera and post some online some day. Thanks for posting!
hey I have never played DnD and I heard it is a bit nerdy (but i dont really care :P) where can I find a kit to create my character, and where can I find a nearby DM :P
@JeffandBCProductions Your local game store will usually have a weekend game day or request for players posted on a bulletin board. I would start at the Wizards of the Coast D&D website to locate the store nearest to you.
Go to your nearest Hobby Lobby (or other hobby store), buy a sheet of black collage board and a good 1" punch (and 3/4" for small figures). Punch your bases out and you're ready to glue (Krazy glue pen is good)! Use a black marker to edge it. If you want the bases thicker, just glue on one more. It'll be as think as a normal D&D mini base. Plus, you could buy different color board to identify various mobs of the same kind (say if you have 15 skeletons and want to track them in groups of 5)
What else can you use for bases if you don't care about flocking and can't find the pre-made ones in stores? I can't buy online because I don't have a credit card, and I was thinking using 1-inch flat black colored buttons, but I wanted a pro opinion on a substitute before i go get a bunch of 1-inch black buttons. PLEASE RESPOND!!
@MyNameBeWill Get a Nuts and Washers 1/8" x1" pack from Home Depot/Lowes. Pennies or Nickels also work swell. Just prime them black and you got a bargain, workable base for your minis.
@bensrpgpile2 watch a vid with a review about the D&D essentials there is a box that has magnets for the bottom of minis and even to do monster tokens idk the price but it might help you or just use coins
@MyNameBeWill Go to a toy store, Wal Mart or a Dollar store. Buy "play money" for $1 per pack. Toss the bills in the trash. use the quarters, dimes and nickels. You may have to shave off the word "COPY" with a hobby knife. Mount the minis with a contact adhesive. After 6 years of experimentation, I have found that Locktite brand Super glue Ultra Gel works best, hands down. You can find this in any hardware store or at Walmart next to the duct tape and other glues (next to the paint section).
@SuperMango04 Most plastic minis are prepainted. All MageKnight are, but quality is often sloppy, especially the older ones. Nevertheless, they are still far cheaper than the D&D stuff for the most part.
what do you use for a base new to the game and looking forward to it but i dont want to spend as much money as they are to buy so i want to build my own thanks
@jboyflya1 See my recent reply to MyNameBeWill. However, I think the GaleForce 9 wood bases are really a fair, fair price. Still, those washers (like a 100 plus) in a pack is about at economical as you can get. I haven't seen any pre-painted bases. I number my bases with those little dot stickers from Staples.
@jboyflya1 I use quarters and nickels (for small size figures) from "play money" ($1.00) at WalMart or the dollar store. Or you can buy bases from Games Workshop. Any 25mm (1inch) circular item works well. Use 40mm Poker chips (also at Wal Mart or a toy store) for large figures.
@NeutronHex I have a bunch myself. I like them but alas they require a paint job - a tricky feat for a unsteady hand guy like me. Definitely worth having some of those in your collection. I especially love the Orcs with the big spears:)
@oblivionrocks2000 Many thanks:) I really enjoyed making this two-part mini series. Wizards of the Coast broke my heart when they canceled their wondrous miniatures line. MageKnight has been a great therapeutic alternative.
One question, where would I get the flock eBay? I already looked at Bosco's and only found a small supply. And I was also thinking about debasing an Elder Iron Dragon and was wondering what flock to use, me and my group of RPG lovers(D&D, Hackmaster, Rifts etc.) are like you, playing in our own homemade game. My group is playing in a Norse setting so if you ever get to reading this please tell me what flock you think I should use for an Elder Iron Dragon. Thanks
@oblivionrocks2000 SkullCrafts is my favorite website for flock. For an iron dragon, I would probably get some different rock-like options. Maybe try a mixture of Blended Brownstone Scatter, Black Ballast Scatter and Darksoil Scatter.
Dude, your videos are excellent they're superb. I love minis as well I'm just now starting my collection. Piece of advice for everybody reading this, Bosco's is a great place to get miniatures, not the best prices but they always have a great selection(orcs, goblins, minotaurs, etc.)
@oblivionrocks2000 Hmmmm - never heard of Bosco's. I did a search on Google and nothing obvious came up. Can you be a little more specific on their company name?
@HeAintGonnaEmailYou Flocking is all that really fine material you put on a miniature's base to make it look better. There are lots of great options (grass, dirt, sand, etc) that you can apply via PVA Glue. It's a night and day difference for your mini and highly recommended.
@1998Cookie Well, it really depends on the module you or your DM is going to run. I always like to have my minis match the monsters in the adventure. That would be a great starting point.
@raincoats Nice! You will be amazed at the selection. The 2.0 Mage Knight series is the best. Highly suggest singles over lot buys (unless you get them silly cheap). Flocking the bases is key.
@15MinutesofFameFilms Four nice choices here: Forgecraft Games (fancy skull bases), GaleForce nine (traditional black bases), Citadel, and a Nuts and Washers 1/8" x1" pack from Home Depot/Lowes.
@MarkPope29 I have a nice collection of Reaper minis as well. I just can't paint to that detail (brush areas are insanely tiny). Plus, the metal tends to chip paint off over time. Still, they have some great options. I always pick some post painted ones up at GenCon. I wish their Legendary Encounters line would have taken off.
dude thanks to your vid i searched on ebay and found a 159 mage knight mini's and it set me for life but do you know why some are better painted then others
@darkadam80 Excellent question. The initial sets in just about any minis are usually just so-so. The creators have to work out a lot of kinks and the manufacturing processes need to be refined. Harbinger is the lone exception (from WotC) I can really think of for minis.
For Mage Knight, their early stuff is kinda rough. However, later sets like Nexus 2.0 are amazing. So, sometimes I just by the dollar singles from ebay stores like grunhir. Search him on eBay. Great service.
@ElevenDestinys haha - I know, right. Actually, if you use a rather wider hobby knife that's a little dull and that towel up good, it's pretty easy to remove the base. Now, doing it fast and skipping the towel part - not a good idea:)
@mr1Duffy We typically play the modules and just enhance them a bit (flavor text, different room configs). We built one module from scratch, Lava and a Cup of Java, for the 2010 Phoenix Comicon. You can download that off our site actually.
@lynxswift I'm a stickler for a mini fitting in a d20 square correctly. MN bases are just too big. It's a shame they didn't have them uniform from the get-go. Nothing against the MN game, but it's just not my cup of tea. I'm just thrilled to have the option to morph them into regular D&D minis:)
@lycank Oh - good question. Four nice choices here: Forgecraft Games (fancy skull bases), GaleForce nine (traditional black bases), Citadel, and a Nuts and Washers 1/8" x1" pack from Home Depot/Lowes.
@metroidzero101 Our pleasure. Terrain and figure building is a lot of fun. Feels good to make new stuff for a game. You just have to be patient is all.
@frostypunk eBay is your best bet (doing a "Mage Knight Lot" site search). We also recommend a specific eBay store in our weekly blog entry. I really do think the prices are still quite reasonable all things considered.
