How bout a cell phone, or microscope, takes a picture of the leaf, the image goes to the internet, through Wolfram Alpha, and something similar to Picasa's facial recognition software, it brings up a few close matches, then you figure out what plant it is. A microscope could be use to identify the type of mold, like on bread. How are the Tricorders supposed to have worked?
