I now know this was written originally for Queen Elizabeth 1st, by William Byrd, but how apt it is, because our Queen Elizabeth in in her 60th year, of glorious and continuous reign...
@samoanchick15 ... Stephen Connolly is one of the best basses they have had in Kings Singers and he has been there for 22 years.. He is leaving in Sept 2010 and his replacement is called Johnathon Howard.. Big shoes to fill, but I'm sure he will be very able indeed... Just as Tim Wayne-Wright did when he replaced Robin Tyson as 2nd 'counter-tenor'...
The Kings Singer's sound is so uniquely beautiful that whoever is actually in at the time it always sounds PERFECT... :0)x
@MerlindaDragon ... Oops.. I defer to your well grounded knowledge... but it does fit our Queen too... And it is exquisite and the harmonies are wonderful, so deep and full... I have listened a good many times now, just to try and follow each voice... But because of the stunning beauty I just end up listening and smiling... Long may The Kings Singers continue to produce vocals like this... *sighs*...
fantastic, paul's range is incredible. they're all terrific. without a doubt the finest male a capella group in the world and for that matter choir. Tallis scholars come close and then the Sixteen but they dont have the purity and expression of the King's Singers
@especkss Hmm, as musically refined as TS are, they have no personality whatsoever unlike these guys who seem to inject a bit of light-heartedness into their shows.
@tomski3 too true. I went to one of their concerts many months ago, and not only was it great, world-class singing, but it was also hilarious. they are such gifted performers and are great at incorporating humor into their performances.
@especkss hey, what do you think of Chanticleer!?! I'm curious as to why you don't consider them to be in the ranks of the King's Singers, Tallis Scholars and Sixteen. I personally prefer Chanticleer, but I'd like to hear why you like these other groups more.
@SFsuperforte chanticleer is great too; I probably should have included them as well. However, I do think the King's Singers are considerably better. The King's Singers just seem to mesh better to me (probably because there are only six of them) and I definitely prefer their countertenors (not to say the ones in Chanticleer aren't great-they are- but the King's Singer's sound purer and more controlled to me). But Chanticleer is still top 5 or 6 for me

Indeed a fitting tribute for Her present Majesty, despite being written for Elizabeth, first of that name.

Considering it's written by William Byrd, I think the Elizabeth to which the hymn refers is the First, not the second.

@especkss yeah, I see what you mean. And I will concede that David is my favorite countertenor of all time.

@bigjdc close. the amen in Buxtehude's "Der Herr ist mit mir" is A-MA-ZING! and the amen in Dominico Scarlatti's "Stabat mater"!!!!!!
