  • It's a good thing bicycles are considered children's toys by many people cause otherwise with faster and faster bikes and now ebikes, we would have to register them, have a license, and buy insurance.

  • @dkw12002 You cant ride an 80mph bicycle around town so why should anyone care? Although, electric bikes SHOULD have to be registered just like gas mopeds... and in some places, they rightly have to be.

  • @dkw12002 this bike cant be driven around town son.... besides, those electric bikes outta be registers just like as mopeds.

  • but will it blend??

  • give that bike to lance armstrong for a new record

  • put cavendish on that bike :)

  • @erkdyy

Two wheels and pedal driven...looks like a bicycle to me.

  • did you notice that isn't a real bicycle?

  • @erkdyy

please provide us your definition of a Bi-Cycle.

  • @erkdyy did you notice that you aren't real?

  • 7 miles faster and you can make it into a time machine.

  • Sonic: You are too slow!

  • thumbs up if u live in nevada :D

  • What about Joseph Kittinger? His wasn't human powered practically at all, powered entirely by the force of gravity. But the nerve it must have took to step out of the weather balloon at 102,000 feet is just incredible; makes me feel that he deserves as much recognition as possible. If you've never heard of Kittinger look him up. Anyways, never heard of this before, but looks like an awesome competition, pushing your own boundaries with like-minded people, nothing better IMHO.

  • well im 6ft3 280 pds and have been clocked by drivers going alongside me at doing around 38mph on my specialized fsr xc mountain bike down a level rd with no hills on either side so is that fast?

  • is it a motor or is the hill like slanted?

  • There's alot of speed & I appreciate the broken barriers towards maximizing human power but what's the point if it isn't practical? You ride this in my city & you'll get splattered like a rotten tomatoe. It has to be practical, within reach monetarily for the average joe and manageable in several escenarios, not just straight lines. Is there anything?

  • @hombrelubinero

Have you seen an average joe driving formula one car, to pickup kids from school? It is same thing. These are race bikes, they are not for daily riding or recreational, they are build to break world record.

  • @hombrelubinero This is probably the dumbest thing anyone could have said. What's the point in any sport according to you? It isn't practical to drive your shit box 50000000cc 10x10 SVU when a 1.5L 4cyl will do just fine.

  • The Bicycle, a Machine from the past with its destiny into the future

  • unreal like i had no idea you could go so fast on pedal power thats freakin amazing

  • @primeflyin

sorry for my early reply, I misunderstood your comment.

  • that is just unreal

  • does the pilot have enough air if it's seal tight?

  • what about Fred Rompelberg?

  • @jassboom

Fred Rompelberg didn't earn world record human power record. He only earned world speed record behind a engine car. As far as I am concern, he had accomplished nothing and proven nothing. This topic had been repeatedly hundreds of time.

  • my topspeed uphill is 53 kmh

  • @gavra98

    prove it!

  • my top speed uphill is 54 kmh

  • @gavra98

    prove it and show us.

  • Thats how I drive to work now since gas prices are so high.

  • call me crazy but i think we should have these things instead of cars

  • I don't think this is a bicycle race, more of an engineer orgy.

  • I want to trial this extremely efficient bicycle with the world's most powerful motorcycle engine just to see what the top speed would be :D

  • @TimpBizkit

If you are going that route, why no put a rocket engine in it, Why stop there? The point of this human power, not engine power!

  • UFOS

  • ok next level is to strap wings to that thing and jump a ramp at that speed

  • so whats the temp inside one of these? no air ports for fresh air apparently? that'd get hella hot.

  • These bike are good garage projects but hopefully never become a sport. They're sooooo much easier than the standard bike everyone knows. You are sitting down the whole time on these and you have the seat to push off of with your legs. They only benefit i see from this is some safety.

  • 104km/h is my topspeed

  • @dgpbtozap

    with what?

  • @powerinmotion mountain bicycle :)

  • @dgpbtozap

go down hill? That is nothing to show or prove if you are just go down hill.

  • @dgpbtozap My top speed is 62km/h with a mountain bike on a straight road, without downhill ;)

  • your car gets 40 miles to the gallon of gas? This guy gets 400 miles on a gallon of water

  • BMX Sucks !!!

  • This looks so dump

  • @oOoDaEnGoOo

    you too!

  • @powerinmotion were you the 1 doing this?

  • Thats how fast i go!

  • Human power (Y)

  • when this baby hits 88 mph, you're gona see some serious shit!

  • i hit 40.3mph goin downhill today lol i got a couple vids, i want to build a shell like this over a recumbent bike

  • Sam improved the record in 2009: 133.284 km/h (82.819 mph)

  • horsepower is a unit of power, not energy.

  • it said there was drag at the openings at the top for the wheels. Why not cover it up/put a small piece like at the front of dirt bikes, but for cutting down wind. of course it would have to "flow" with the rest of the bike, but air would go above it. would that be good, or do you want the air to "hug" the bike?

  • My BMX Could put that to the test :P

  • @xLak3

    prove it!

  • the world downhill skateboard record is 80.83 mph

  • @ManWithFIngers

does the skateboard had pedal? I am expected faster, that is consider very slow on a skateboard go downhill only able hit 80mph, i was expected something like 100mph. This video is not about go downhill the fastest, but human power. You can simple drop something from the plane and travel over 100mph.

  • @powerinmotion

"simple" as in something that took damn near the whole time humans have been on earth so far to develop ? i mean airplanes.

  • @ManWithFIngers

    Downhill...even the sh!t goes downhill :)

  • @lovesvag69 What is not fast about that bike?

  • 49 people cant ride a normal bike

  • someone said this already - how do they breathe? Or is the race so short it's basically anaerobic??

  • They need to try dimples like on a golf ball. They create vortexes which keeps the air from sticking to the surface.

  • can you turn

  • @MrManTurtle

can you see there is handle bar?

  • @powerinmotion if you paid attention the lady said they can turn about 1cm in either direction 4:00-4:03

  • @bloodalchemy

so, you just re-confirmed it can turn.

  • 3:10 "I can use a mirror" Ha ha he lol.

What else are you gonna do?

  • stabilizers or three wheels would be good support for these

  • @3:31 in Soviet Russia.... bike peddle you

  • This video is from 2006, hasnt Sam broken his own record, with a bike that he sits in backwards?

  • I'd rather go electric and charged by solar at home....

  • holy shit i just randomly clicked on this video and i live in a town not far from there called elko nevada

  • 1:03 thats what she said

  • You can tell shes reading this...must be a blonde..she says keelo-meters an hour instead of kilometers 00:21

  • 6.24 - 6:31 best Sound ever :D:D it's just a bike :D

  • I is amazing to see how many people here think that a bike going behind a car is human powered. The human contributes, sure, but most of the power is from the engine of the car. Just because you cannot see the air and what it does behind the car to the biker does not mean it is not there or that it is not exerting huge force pulling the bike forward! At 100mph the bike would be powered like few % by the rider and more than 90% by the car. Sleeping through physics lessons, are we?

  • Now it needs golf ball dimples.

  • I know a perfect way to make a bicycle go fast. You set up a series of gears to multiply the speed of the chain (go from a smaller sprocket to a bigger sprocket). This is going to make it harder to pedal, but you cancel that out by putting long levers on the bike to make it easier to pedal.

  • @vistigioful you were home schooled, werent you?

This is why physics in high school is REQUIRED.

  • @vistigioful extremely long cranks are detrimental to pedalling efficiency otherwise the pros would use them.

  • no way in hell would i ever qualify these things as bycicles. yes i understand they work the same way, but its not a bicycle! get one that looks like an everyday bike and do that, ill even let you put those aerodynamic shrouds on, but the mechnical parts and frame must resemble a proper bicycle! i hate how people can call machines something that they absolutely could never be identified as by anyone else who uses the actual machines!

  • @miketheredneckable recumbent bikes were first used in international races in the 1920s, and the bicycle commission banned them, because they were FASTER (better). ONLY because the companies that made 'normal' bikes screamed their heads off (money money money).

It has two wheels, its human powered, its a BICYCLE.

  • @miketheredneckable Just because you are not personally familiar with recumbent bikes does not make them any less of a bike. They are more popular in Europe, to be sure, but even in the states there are recumbent cycling clubs. Many people who have had accidents, cancer, or limbs blown off in combat find that recumbents are the only bikes they can ride without discomfort. Learn about things before you preclaim contempt for them; you won't look as stupid that way.

  • @dhead64 Loads of people on the internet have that attitude, there all pretty much teenage boys who's minds have not developed yet. They genuinely think they have a good point and think they will be lauded for it.

  • weighs 60 pounds? bullshit. they could make it weigh 10-20 pounds and he could go so much faster.

  • @master777999 Your physics is wrong. Air resistance is the important fact, mass only reduces the acceleration, in fact, the fact that they are going downhill means that extra mass helps overcome air resistance.

  • @Anteater1234567 they are not going downhill. The road is perfectly flat.

  • A possible way to decrease wind resistance would be to give it a finish like a golf ball. It helps to break the drag of molecular cohesion. Also check out shark skin, same principle. Good luck.

  • I am not sure if it is a different class or what, but that is not the world's fastest bicycle. I know of at least one record by a road type bike like Lance Armstrong uses set at Bonneville on the salt flats. I am not sure of the exact speed, but it was at least 100mph using an Indy car in front of it as a wind block. I have a picture of the bike and car together somewhere.

  • @v12tommy

if you put a train in the front of bike, you can ever go faster.

  • @powerinmotion How do you figure?

  • @v12tommy .It's sad that you can't see the humor in the comment about the train.

  • @powerinmotion I don't know why you think that. Cars are capable of much higher speeds than trains, plus if you followed a train you would have to deal with the sleepers of the track and the fact that the train cannot accelerate quickly.

  • @v12tommy

i am not thinking train at all, put a car in front of bike to reduce wind resistance is not considering human power world record.

  • @powerinmotion It is still a human powered record. The car is not pulling the bike. There is nothing touching the bike except for the rider, it is on perfectly level ground, and the rider is the only thing propelling the bike forward and therefore would be a human powered record. If they could find a road flat enough, they could even come up here to Colorado where the air is thinner and the driver could use a scuba tank with more oxygen...that would also be human powered as well.

  • @v12tommy

In order to be great, one must solve the real problem. There are basically three problems need to solve. How to get the maximum power from a person, how to build a better bike to cut through the wind resistance to get maximum speed, how to build a better mechanical to deliver maximum power. By placing a car in front of bike, you simply not solving any of the problem and avoiding challenge. In other word, it is not an accomplishment, that is why no one remember it.

  • @powerinmotion by placing a car in front of the bike you are solving a problem. You are solving the problem of wind resistance in the same way that allows race cars to go faster by drafting off of each other. By having two objects traveling close to each other at the same speed allows both objects to travel at a greater speed using less energy than that object traveling alone. Get two bikes together you would have the same effect. Road race bikes do it all the time.

  • @v12tommy

you must not realize that in order to double ones speed, you need to increase the power provided by a factor of 8. so incase of a car, if 100hp gets you 100mph, you would need 800hp to get to 200. Thats just from drag. Dont tell me that riding behind the car hiding from wind resistance is world-record worthy. Human powered, sure, but so what? The bike above is designed to be as stream-line as possible to have the lowest resistance, not hide behind cars. I would do it on a HUMID day.

  • @v12tommy While the bike may not have been directly powered by the car, the force of wind resistance was removed from the bike by the car, making it much easier for the biker to go that fast. The car is an essential part of the equation, and it exerts a huge amount of force that otherwise would have had to have been exerted by the biker.

  • technically drafting would improve and slightly pull the cyclist. so yes indeed it is NOT cyclist power.

  • @v12tommy dude... did you just say cars can go faster than trains? show me a car that goes as fast as 581km/h... that's the speed record for the MLX01...

  • @v12tommy car faster than train? LOL watch?v=_Ir_n3J5ABA Actual passenger train speed test.

  • @v12tommy cars are not necessarily capable of much higher speeds than trains. The Shanghai maglev train has a normal operating speed of 268 mph. That's faster than any production car in the world. Of course a person could find a rocket propelled car such as the ones used at bonnieville that would go faster, but I wouldn't want to be on a bicycle behind a rocket engine...

  • @v12tommy i clicked on this thinking it was that, and i was disapointed it wasnt.

  • they should put a motor on one

  • @redghost105 and what is the point of that?

  • @redghost105 if they wanted to ruin all the fun and effort to gain nothing but winnning and no self righteousness... sure! ^__^

  • we don't talk about crashing

  • Love the RX-8 at 3:32 =P

  • OMG!!!!

  • Surprised the wheel slots cause more friction than rest of bike. Might be possible to make hubless wheels so only holes for the rims and tyres need be drilled which might help reduce friction. But need strong rims with slotted grooves inside the rim so can transfer power to the wheel.

  • Mark cavendish could go that fast on a kids tricycle

  • Future o' bikes?

  • @Leeate Should be "Future o' cars"...

  • ... world record speed, that is.

  • how many gears? xD

  • @floris09172385 up to 7th like an toyota

  • i wonder what someone like Bos couldve done in one of these, being able to go over 75km/h on the flat on a standard bike

  • I don't care if the English did invent the language, its kevlAR with an AR not, kevlUH.

Unless she's one of those chicks from Australia, in that case I don't care. I'm just sick of the English telling us to talk correctly when they can't even pronounce half the words in the dictionary.

  • I don't like that wobbling, add some wings for stability hah

  • it makes me feel a bit odd because i only managed 65km/h downhill with my mountainbike

  • Wow, that's pretty f***ing fast !

  • I'm sorry I got that wrong.

The sprocket on the rear wheel was about 5" in diameter.

The sprocket on the front wheel was about 22" in diameter.

  • There was an entry in the Guinness book of world records back in the 1970s and early 1980s about a guy who sustained a bike pedal at 105 MPH after being pulled to that speed behind a car. The funniest thing about his bike was that though it was a stock bicycle that you can buy anywhere, there were covers over the spoke areas on both wheels and the sprocket on the rear tire was about 22" in diameter.

  • @nudist0885

I heard about that too, besides being towed up to speed, he was also being helped by the staying in the air wake of the car, being sucked along. He had to put out enough power to stay close to the car. I'd say it took some balls to go 105 on a regular bicycle extremely close to a car. I've gone down the other side of bridges at highway speeds and you feel every little bump.

  • This shouldnt count as a bicycle record. He can push against his seat, so it functions as a legpress, ergo, you can push harder than on a "normal bike".

  • @Kiddowesth

Are you referring that other type bikes (normal) are inefficient, and that recumbent are better :-)

  • @powerinmotion Actually to refer to a recumbent as a bicycle is rather unfair. Do you know what the actual speed for a " normal " bicycle is by the way ?

  • @ReneeNme

Please define the definition of bicycle?

  • @powerinmotion i guess he got sick of your dumbness

    im just saying

  • @powerinmotion Define the definition?

Sure, I'll be sure to subscribe to a subscription too

I like the part where he pedals the pedals.

    I commented a comment btw.

  • @Kiddowesth

And your point is? It's a bicycle. Therefore it can set a bicycle record. I'm sorry you don't understand forward thinking, and I'm sure this never occurred to you, but things may be upgraded. We should keep terribly inefficient ideas for what reason may I ask? Because it's you're idea of traditional?

  • @Kiddowesth so a salt flat car shouldnt hold the land speed record?

  • @Kiddowesth bi = two

cycle = cyclo = round (wheels)

bicycle = anything with 2 wheels, regardless of rider position.

Maybe there should be separate records for recumbent and upright bikes?

  • *lol* Suddenly my 72 km/h downhill feels like a pity ;)

  • how much are those bikes?

  • @cupcakefail

contact the bike designer and find out.

  • @cupcakefail

The bikes in the video are heavily customized recumbent bikes (your body is behind the pedals and closer to the ground)with a shell around them. Just the Kevlar shell is probably thousands of dollars. However you can buy a regular recumbent from a company like Burley, they are on the web. Even the regular ones are faster than normal bikes and more comfortable.

  • High speed transportation, and a weight less strategy. Good deal.

  • The Flintstones car

  • "Faster than anyone has ever ridden a bicycle anywhere!" ... Cool, he's a good cyclist but any international pro would easily beat his record with that "bike" on the first try. However, they just don't care.

  • wow

  • I hate when journalists do stupid comparisons to try to impress the uneducated.

  • U can take road with this bike and travel consuming 0 gasoline...

Just need drink isotonic and eat some chocolates...

  • and we are still using gas? i say make a human powered bus and but an end to lethargic spread!!!!

  • in soviet russia. bike rides you!

  • @dgk990 a bicycle is a 2 wheeled human powered vehicle.

  • "... It's hard being on top..." lol NICE! XD

  • It's stupid when they say the "bikes reach speeds of cruising speeds of cars, yet they use a fraction of the energy". Obviously these bikes take 5 miles to reach top speed, where cars with 60 horsepower can hit top speed within a few hundred feet

  • @StopMotionMind true, but I don't think it undermines how incredible the feats of engineering are required to harness only human energy to reach such speeds.

  • i got faster on my gethho husky xD

  • eh that seems way too dangerous to me. I'd rather keep my bike at like 10-15mph on the trail and take the motor bike if I wanna take a cruise

  • Dude was like on the verge of Death when they took off the cover.......HAHA

  • of course it is a bicycle... it's called a "ligfiets" (laying bicycle) they're built in Lelystad, just outside of Amsterdam

  • Where can i buy one of these

  • I would like to see Cancellara ride that sort of bike, he can beat that record!

  • Put some wings on that bike and how awesome that would be haha

  • "maximum gradient" 2/3 of a percent. they're cheating!

  • It's good to see Carl Rove with the Hat taking speed test

  • he doesn`t want the opening to be bigger than it already is ; )

  • a police officer once stopped me for speeding on my cycle, 45 in a 30 zone, i couldn't stop laughing and he told me to leave.

  • Put Fabian Cancellara in that bike and you will see him breaking the speed of sound...

  • The speed record claim is incorrect. The fastest speed was just over 100mph ( 160kmh) which was set sometime in the late 1950's I think. I saw the newsreel of it happening. Can someone add to the facts please , I am a bit vague after all this time.

  • jawsticks that was a good idea:)

  • how do i order one?

  • put Usain Bolt on that bike n it can go faster than Bugatti Veyron.

  • Interesting what fasted normal bicycle speed on flat?

  • this can hit any animalss then..... bom

  • Very cool stuff!

  • how do you steer this bike?

  • so do you still get a speeding ticket if you have one of these?

  • wow its also bullet-proof

  • this sport needs to be added to the olympics

  • nice work
