I just bought a come along with three hooks, at this point the third hook is attached to the winch. What is the use of that third hook? The come along is rated at 8000lb for a single line pull.
This type of winch is known as a Tirfor winch. It's commonly sold as the Griphoist winch in the USA, but can be found under other brand names. There are several models available, ranging in single pull capacities of 2000lbs to 8000lbs. Their most significant plus is unlimited wire rope capacity (long reach), while a somewhat high price tag (largest model selling for $2000 ~ $4000) is their Achilles' heel. You can often find them cheaper (used) on eBay.
it might be "hard work" but pulling out a 3000 pound piece of rusted 50+ year old farming equipment off my land using the hand winch I bought for 25 bucks was quite easy and quite entertaining.
Stuck driver: Im 150 kms past the spruce tree, then another 12 kms past the birch tree, and when you see the poplar, turn left, climb that hill, go another 15 kms, then cross the river with your tow truck, then you will see a large mud hole. Drive through that and im just another 10 kms down the trail, you cant miss me!
Would you honestly call a tow truck if you were stuck in the middle of nowhere? You are clearly a city slicker, because first of all, where im from, cell phones dont work where we play, tow tucks cant get half as far as my truck can, and it just plain wouldnt happen to get a tow truck out to the middle of nowhere. You would probably have to call a sky-crane in from europe or something.
"Hand winching is damn hard work" - didn't your mother tell you to eat the crusts of your bread when you were a little tike? hahaha bloody good systems these though, cheers

nice winch, there are no limits for that; front and rear tow, engine broken, never stall out

thats looks good but i would always just use a come along. they work great, cheaper, easier to use and less parts.

this thing is way too much work. all you need is a come along and some chain a lot cheaper, easier, and in my opinion more reliable.
bry258 2 years ago
i also don't understand why you'd go through all that when you can just use a come along....
