oh yeh - refurbished after only 3 years of being constructed? Now that's a record breaking refurbishment.

The flat we lived in is now demolished and Thank the good Lord for that. I guess they didn't see refurbishment in their final solution to a toxic hell hole.

I still find a couple things hilarious when I lived there, I remember one morning I got up and decided to go to the Kwik save round the corner, but on the way round I met a guy I know and he said where are you going? I said to Kwik save, he said it is not there anymore it has been burned down, I thought he was kidding, but when I turned the corner there was a big space where the quick save was, and it was fenced off, he wasn't kidding. Oddly though I actually quite enjoyed living there.

yes i used to live here when I was in my 20s, I actually feel a wee bit sad that they are getting demolished, but I remember when I lived there that these flats were the nicest thing about this area they actually looked not that bad from the outside and inside they were kind of nice too considering the surrounding area, I doubt if I could do it now but at the time it was walking distance into Glasgow city centre.

@cfcnlr These flats are in Springburn which is a shitehole. Royston, Barmulloch, Springburn, Barlornock are all shiteholes which is in the north of the city. Places like Kelvindale, Kelvingrove and Bearsden is where all the snobby and posh folk live. Lol.

There is a hidden psychological impact of living in these concrete islands - separate from EVERYTHING.

I guess you have to experience the visceral reality of something in order to understand it.

A shame that some only care about money and status and think they are so much stronger and faster and "tougher" than those they look down upon. They are ignorant as to the true nature of life for many. We come from a brutal past - for many it still is.

Glasgow is fading in this new labour inequity.

I grew up in the germiston high rise flats just across the railway from red road flats. These buildings were not healthy places and in the early years - those that had money and sense moved out in vast numbers.

My health is effected because of the fungus and mould that grew in my bedroom as a child. Condensation froze as ice and sometimes in my bed as the heating broke in all the flats only 3 months after construction finished.

I had health problems as a kid because of fungal spores.

I dont know whay but there is something magnificent about these buildings. I have always found the high rise buildings absolutely amazing. I love watching videos of when they first opened and it seemed all this walkway, underpass, overpass shit was the future. Genuinely think we will miss them one day.

But when talking about demolishing a rundown area, suddenly romantic feelings are showing up?! Be glad you don't live there yourself and we're getting rid of those terrible places in future. I was brought up in Red Road, even started my first TV production company from there. They were frine until GDC started using them as a dumping ground for the NEDS from places like Blackhill and Possil. Then wilfully neglected them to DELIBERATELY CREATE the slums that their cronies will now make millions out of demolishing! RIP Red Road, and RIP the three poor souls that jumped the other day.

@BillyBigTop A landmark you have been proud of? Better to put them down and rebuild the place with simple, 1 family housing on the ground floor with a backyard. I guess that will make people feel much better and happier than stuff them on the top floor of such an towerblock, don't ya think so? Red Road has fullfilled the wishes of house shortening after world war 2 but we're living in 2010 right now and the blocks are not up to date anymore and not of these days anymore. It's a problem!

@FuckThePolice70 I agree that its time to move forward but here in Liverpool there have been loads of tower blocks that have been full of asylum seekers and smackheads that have been kicked out and transormed into brilliant up to date apartments. just shows what a bit of money and a lick of paint can do!... if the building is sound structurely then save it.

Its 'bad' folk who transform an area into a 'bad' place, whereas, conversley, 'decent' people re-transform an area into a 'decent' place. I was born in Easterhouse (Glasgow) which, at the time was rather grim in architectural terms, whereas, as I recall, most of the folk in the area where thoroughly decent, which made my childhood rather plaeasant really. @partyhouse88 Maybe, but the positive side of it is that they can build instead of the big housing estates something better. Like one family houses on 1 floor. I've seen places like Red Road in my country changing into beautiful, respectable new estates and that's better for the citizens and the area. It's an upgrade for the entire neighbourhood.

What they normally do is temporary re-house the people and put them at the top of the list for new houses that are built in the area. But ive heard they are going to build modern yuppie kind of flats for young professionals so they will probably just re-house them. Glasgow is going through alot of regeneration at the moment, all the poorly built tower blocks and tenements of the 50's 60's and 70's are being demolished and replaced with modern housing. @thepiper84 As far as I heard when they built these flats in 1969 it was really helpful and filled up with lots of people from the Gorbals area who were needing housing, I reckon high flats are a good space saver for as it houses many people and does not take up so much room. But what I think is a waste of money is these flats were only built in 1969, and that is not all that long ago in the scheme of buildings. they should have made an effort to upkeep the surrounding area better.

The tenements were sub standard slums - these were ideal at the time because of Glasgows growing population and high demand for houses, these are set to come down within the next 10 - 15 years anyway. and btw there is hardly any Polish or Romanians in them, its mostly Scottish with asians, africans and some eastern euros.
