oh yeh - refurbished after only 3 years of being constructed? Now that's a record breaking refurbishment.
The flat we lived in is now demolished and Thank the good Lord for that. I guess they didn't see refurbishment in their final solution to a toxic hell hole.
But keep up the positivity. It obviously works for you..
I still find a couple things hilarious when I lived there, I remember one morning I got up and decided to go to the Kwik save round the corner, but on the way round I met a guy I know and he said where are you going? I said to Kwik save, he said it is not there anymore it has been burned down, I thought he was kidding, but when I turned the corner there was a big space where the quick save was, and it was fenced off, he wasn't kidding. Oddly though I actually quite enjoyed living there.
yes i used to live here when I was in my 20s, I actually feel a wee bit sad that they are getting demolished, but I remember when I lived there that these flats were the nicest thing about this area they actually looked not that bad from the outside and inside they were kind of nice too considering the surrounding area, I doubt if I could do it now but at the time it was walking distance into Glasgow city centre.
@cfcnlr These flats are in Springburn which is a shitehole. Royston, Barmulloch, Springburn, Barlornock are all shiteholes which is in the north of the city. Places like Kelvindale, Kelvingrove and Bearsden is where all the snobby and posh folk live. Lol.
There is a hidden psychological impact of living in these concrete islands - separate from EVERYTHING.
I guess you have to experience the visceral reality of something in order to understand it.
A shame that some only care about money and status and think they are so much stronger and faster and "tougher" than those they look down upon. They are ignorant as to the true nature of life for many. We come from a brutal past - for many it still is.
I grew up in the germiston high rise flats just across the railway from red road flats. These buildings were not healthy places and in the early years - those that had money and sense moved out in vast numbers.
My health is effected because of the fungus and mould that grew in my bedroom as a child. Condensation froze as ice and sometimes in my bed as the heating broke in all the flats only 3 months after construction finished.
I had health problems as a kid because of fungal spores.
Glesga wouldn't be Glesga without these structures! Fair enough a few bag heads have overdosed in them but, EVERYTIME I go t the housing for a social house, I'm told they have none?! I'm not a bag head and would still live in one of these 'APARTMENTS. Ya Monkey Wee Rascals!!!! Failing this I here Bar L does a good sunda breakie (",)
I dont know whay but there is something magnificent about these buildings. I have always found the high rise buildings absolutely amazing. I love watching videos of when they first opened and it seemed all this walkway, underpass, overpass shit was the future. Genuinely think we will miss them one day.
@AppleOfGlasgow That's the problem....most people disgust living in such places like Red Road and think it's a shithole - as long as they don't have to live there THEMSELVES! But when talking about demolishing a rundown area, suddenly romantic feelings are showing up?! Be glad you don't live there yourself and we're getting rid of those terrible places in future. It's a dump and people are not caged animals who can put in those towerblocks!
I was brought up in Red Road, even started my first TV production company from there. They were frine until GDC started using them as a dumping ground for the NEDS from places like Blackhill and Possil. Then wilfully neglected them to DELIBERATELY CREATE the slums that their cronies will now make millions out of demolishing! RIP Red Road, and RIP the three poor souls that jumped the other day.
get shut of all the asylum seekers and refurbish the place! sorry to see these go as they have been a landmark for thepast 40+ years. such a waste! or at least save a few of them!
@BillyBigTop A landmark you have been proud of? Better to put them down and rebuild the place with simple, 1 family housing on the ground floor with a backyard. I guess that will make people feel much better and happier than stuff them on the top floor of such an towerblock, don't ya think so? Red Road has fullfilled the wishes of house shortening after world war 2 but we're living in 2010 right now and the blocks are not up to date anymore and not of these days anymore. It's a problem!
@FuckThePolice70 I agree that its time to move forward but here in Liverpool there have been loads of tower blocks that have been full of asylum seekers and smackheads that have been kicked out and transormed into brilliant up to date apartments. just shows what a bit of money and a lick of paint can do!... if the building is sound structurely then save it.
@BillyBigTop Here here BillyBigTop! You have hit the nail on the head. Its 'bad' folk who transform an area into a 'bad' place, whereas, conversley, 'decent' people re-transform an area into a 'decent' place. I was born in Easterhouse (Glasgow) which, at the time was rather grim in architectural terms, whereas, as I recall, most of the folk in the area where thoroughly decent, which made my childhood rather plaeasant really. Best wishes BillyBigTop. Ebs
@Ebsteins31653 Hey nice to hear somebody with some sence on here lol!
Its not an area that bad its the people who make it bad!.... loads of bad areas in Liverpool were im from but plenty of lovely areas too!..... We had capital of culture only thing is the city is getting better , the people are getting worse! ha!!
@partyhouse88 Maybe, but the positive side of it is that they can build instead of the big housing estates something better. Like one family houses on 1 floor. I've seen places like Red Road in my country changing into beautiful, respectable new estates and that's better for the citizens and the area. It's an upgrade for the entire neighbourhood.
ive been up the top floor many times and that guys right, on a windy day the full building shakes lol its freaky. they are full of niggers and smelly pakis
englands a shite hole, scotland invented the tv, telephone, steam engine, bikes... should i go on, there are shite holes all over britain- no just in scotland
lol is that bad hahaha....come see bulgarian blocs....they are all dirty old....these are more modern...i myself live on 11th floor of a 21 floored shithole...with scrapes all over it and graffiti...and all the blocs around are like that
they might no look as bad in this vid but most of the flats are burnt out and filled with graffititi and boarded up these are made from metal sheets these flats
Well I love modernist architecture and if these tower blocks are sound then why demolish them? Surely they could be refurbished and saved? Or is it the people who live in them who have made the place a no go zone?
@LukaSteinberg And you can judge? How do you know 'that Dutch fuck' of yours doesn't know what it's like to live in a slum? Have you ever been in HIS or HER slum by the way??
full of people who get benefits, the labour mob want to stop the benefits so they can give them to islamic terrorists and polish children who have never been in scotland
yep - your right , glasgow is the most dangerous city in europe , it has the highest rates of murders for 18 to 25 year olds, thats why we moved to london , i use to live in the gorbals , many years ago ofcourse
you know whats so demented about the design of that estate ??? - all the vacant space around around it , why build them so high and compact , daft beyond belief , when i was living up there ,id see that estate from Everywhere , and think "F*ck living there" - sorry to anyone that lives there LOL
You're right. they could have made a bigger mid rise or low rise estate with all that space, that would have looked alot better and more appealing. god knows why they opted for these ugly monstrocities. from what ive heard they are coming down in the near future.
i wonder where they will move everyone ?!! theres soo many empty estates in glasgow , like ghost towns , they all need refurbishing dont they , whe i was last there ... about 3 yrs ago , there was a lot that needed done on the outskirts , and i couldnt go anywhere in the city centre without getting brick dust in my eye from the crumbling buildings , there was scaffolding and shoring everywhere , whats it like now ????
What they normally do is temporary re-house the people and put them at the top of the list for new houses that are built in the area. But ive heard they are going to build modern yuppie kind of flats for young professionals so they will probably just re-house them. Glasgow is going through alot of regeneration at the moment, all the poorly built tower blocks and tenements of the 50's 60's and 70's are being demolished and replaced with modern housing. The city centre is going through alot of...
regeneration aswell. They are building alot of flats and are getting rid of some of the older buildings. Glasgow city centre has a weird mix of old and modern at the moment lol but what it really lacks is height. I want them to build bigger buildings around the city centre, give the city a skyline
@thepiper84 As far as I heard when they built these flats in 1969 it was really helpful and filled up with lots of people from the Gorbals area who were needing housing, I reckon high flats are a good space saver for as it houses many people and does not take up so much room. But what I think is a waste of money is these flats were only built in 1969, and that is not all that long ago in the scheme of buildings. they should have made an effort to upkeep the surrounding area better.

I think a Polish person would be insulted by that comment. Don't drag the fine country of Poland down to the same level as Scotland, at least their inhabitants aren't shy of a bit of work and aren't bitter twisted bigots with chips on their shoulders because they're not as successful as the English.
full of poles and romanians noo! hippy planners in the 60s built these shit holes, bastards! and were do the planners live? bearsden! pulled down 3 quarters of glasgows beautiful tennements for this shit.
The tenements were sub standard slums - these were ideal at the time because of Glasgows growing population and high demand for houses, these are set to come down within the next 10 - 15 years anyway. and btw there is hardly any Polish or Romanians in them, its mostly Scottish with asians, africans and some eastern euros.
so why are so many slums still up and running 120 years after they where built?, high rise buildings ideal ? wit planet dae yoo live on ya knob? some eastern euros, dae ye meen poles n romanians? prick.
