Yes the slapping thing always gets me too-I'd invite ANYONE!!! to let him "slap" them just once- I dont care who you are. He's a big guy, he's fast, and he can knock you out!!
everytime somebody discounts kenpo i point them to mr. mills. this is in my opinion the top shelf of the art. i call it the "violent sneeze". he cracks that whip like nobodies buisness!
Now I understand the five elements of power much better. Body mass in motion, gravitational drop, rotating motion, cintrifical rotation, and body alignment.
@PrsFenderJackson1980 heh, i know what you mean..underated shot. got one once that made my knees come UP to my chest, then i dropped.think it cleansed 3 years of bad food in 2 seconds
I've seen comments on "slapping himself" and have to say that many people just have a tendency to be ignorant. If you listen to Master Mills, he clarifies the concept behind the slapping. I would like to see any of you who doubt his power or speed to put yourself on the receiving end of Master Mills. I am not a AK stylist, but I have the greatest respect and admiration for GM Parker and his Senior Students.
Kenpo is bad ass...I started when i was 17...I am 27 now...use to be part of the NCKKA...National Chinesse Kenpo Karate Association...Takes time to learn but it is worth every second..
Yes, I agree. I have been training with Mr. Mills for some time now and I can say he is the man! I too trained in the NCKKA many years ago. Who was your instructor?
awesome. Yeah but when your hitting your gi it's creating power but aren't you suppose to be hitting the guy too instead of hitting your gi. I know it's a safety thing b/c you want your training partner to stay and train with you instead of bleed on the floor/ or unconscious. What a freaking cool instructor though
I'm not an American Kenpo stylist but I've always had great respect especially for the oold school Parker black belts like Trejo, Planas, Kelly, Mills, Chapel, Hebler, etc. Those guys were fast and lethal, most still are.
he is the real deal, my family and i used to know him personaly. Back in the day he used to be a champion quick draw, and when i was young we would go to his house and he would have his gun in the hoster uncocked, and he would have me point one at him with the hammer cocked,(both guns empty), and before I could pull the trigger he would have his gun out, cocked and fired. I used to watch him test out new stuff on my dad and its incredible what he can do
Mr. Mills is the real deal. I have been in & at the art of American Kenpo for some time. I have seen and worked out with - well you name em, and this is the only person I would be training with. I wish all martial artists the best in their journey. Remember - it is all about the journey, and humility is part of that journey - no matter what your system.
I have been training kenpo for years, and yeah in PRACTICE you hit your shoulder so you dont beat up your practice partner. In real life you wouldn't hit your shoulder, you hit your attackers face. Its called a DISTRACT, learn the style then you can make fun.
iv seen this an up close. and ya he does hit himself-im not gonna say he doesnt and that cuses an extra noise, but there is a lot that you dont see him do. He is unreal
he's not really fast...you just get confused by the sound...one of his 3 hits is just a hit to his own shoulder so it's sounds faster...watch it without sound
He is hitting himself, not just to generate the noise, but it insures that the proper motions are being followed, since proper motion is key in kenpo.
actaully hitting his own shoulder is not to make a noise or a cheating the technique it's to show that arm can apply a thrusting punch (or any other tecniques fits to that position)...
actually this is where you are very wrong. MR. Mills is extremely fast. yes he does hit himself, and will even admit it if you really pay attention to the video, but the speed in kenpo is amazing. Every motion he makes IS a strike. Every block IS a strike.
right off the bat, you need to condition your body with hits in order to withstand the effect if hit on the street during a fight, without it, most people freeze.. Getting hit mildly like this demonstration creates a sense of knowledge of what it is to be realized by your opponent. without it, I see many black belts get hit and quit after one punch on the street
Some Good points. Too many schools don't practice realistically and students get false sense of martial skill. I have worked out with AKKI guys and know that is not the case. Who knows what happened during the entire seminar this is only an excerpt.
I am a student of Taika Oyata's style, Ryu Te, formerly called RyuKyu Kenpo. I was always curious as to the similarities, if any, between the two styles of Kenpo. Any thoughts? Feedback?
He slaps himself in the body just for the noise to make himself sound faster. In reality those little flicky moves have 0 power, and it's a waste of movement to hit yourself like that...
It's a shame you feel that way, but it exposes your level of knowledge, and tells me you don't hit very hard. Even traditional boxers "reciprocate" forward motion.
Paul mills is simply amazing. I have experienced first hand his ability. Its true, "To feel is to believe".
It wasn't like the "House of Pain" cds but even my instructor was surprise paul hit me as hard as he did, which in reality is nothing compaired to what he can really do to a person.
As impressed as I have been with the other clips, there was always a little bit of doubt in my mind as to the effectiveness of the rate of speed involved. Well, after hearing Mr. Mills explain what he is doing that doubt is seriously diminished. Gives the term "speed kills" a new context. Although, let us not forget the reason that Mr.Mills and others of his caliber are as fast as they are because they are accurate and powerful first and foremost. Definitely something to aspire to.
I come from a FMA (Kali) background and am impressed with Paul Mills. My instructor always said he was the best in Kenpo - especially with Knife and clubs. Question for you; I don't see many kicks in your vids? Is that just how the selection worked out, or do you not kick much in the AKKI? Just curious, as these few clips are all I have seen. I know they are just limited clips.
It is just the selection. We have specific plans to show certain aspects of what we do in the AKKI and want to share. You may see some in the future. Thanks for the comment.
What is the best way to find if there is an AKKI school near me? I have watched every AKKI video on youtube, and all those on the site and there really is something different about what this fellow is doing. I want to get out and see it - I am becoming convinced that other Kenpo associations just don't have it. Will the contact info on the website be my best bet?
Thanks for the interest! Anyone interested in finding an AKKI studio near them can send me an email through YouTube. Let me know your name, city, state and your email. I will then forward it to the right AKKI regional rep in your area. We're working to add a list on the site to help streamline this for everyone in the near future. -- Ryan

I got lucky, and found an instructor locally through the forum that I'm on...Actually, he found me..

Do yourself a favor...When you DO find a school that's near you, GO! You WON'T be disappointed...
