@joyride199 It's pronounced with a Dutch g, which doesn't have a place in English. Much like you're choking in something, but more in the front of your throat than in the back.
What I don't like in the US getting their hands on technology is they will always use it for their stupid wars. If mister Tyson was president, it would be a whole different story but americans sometimes elect trash like Bush.
@tuzmor No scientist is not moved by competition or money they are moved by something higher we are moved by pure curiosity and if we adopted a business model we would collapse( i say we since i have a bachelors in experimental physics i know not a full fledged scientist yet but i'm getting their)
Let the private sector fund all science research, not the government. Up until war world 2, the majority of science funding came from the private sector. Scientific research was progressing just fine with little to no government funding.
@tuzmor Sorry, but healthy competition has brought out the best in people and organizations. Without it, our technology would not be what it is today. It's a human thing. However, it doesn't really work well when it comes to science and politics, because then, everyone just screws each other over.

@tuzmor Francis and Crick wrote a one-page paper explaining the double-helix structure of the DNA so they get the credit first. They didn't explain everything in detail until a little later on. We're all human, so this whole competition thing is really inevitable.
I would expect from such a high figure and astronomer a more modern thinking. Patriotism is a reminiscent of tribal times, a very limited "us and them" way of thinking. There is no reason to proud to be american or anythink like it, you did not choose so. We are one kind only, and should be working without frontiers for the betterment of us all.
I am soo making a presentation based on this. I will recite you and mention you on every slide, Mr. Tyson. On a second thought, quoting Tyson will be so cool!!
If USA is not wealthy I really don't know which country is.About CERN USA citizen can peacefully sleep. So much money being spent on so to speak nothing.Tesla had never built anything without knowing what He wanted to achive.CERN scientist doing something .But as we all know that's not good enough, not efficiant enough. Results are poor.maybe I am not well informed.Pardon if that's the case.Good luck scientists !make us proud !
Is the best thing this guy has to say about physics that it was used to bomb civilians for political purposes? I suppose one could forgive him for not knowing much history, but this is a bit outrageous.
We are not wealthy anymore. We do not have a 3 trillion dollar budget to spend.
We take in 2.6 trillion roughly and have 3.8 trillion in expenses .
So we are spending 175% of what we take in.Perhaps Neil should study the budget. Before we waste money on discovering things we might use....we need to be able to pay for the things have. We need infrastructure and alternate energy among many other things before a collider, It will be a while before we can afford such things.
@Tuya56 You obviously have not looked at the budget or the national debt calculator. Either that or you are not capable of comprehending VERY simple math. You can not spend what you do not have. It will take us 50 to 70 years to climb out of debt IF we balanced the budget tomorrow. If we were to pay it off sooner we would need to reduce the budget permanently. With reduced revenue in the middle of a long term recession while continually exporting jobs and reduced wages? Your ignorant.
@jam11x Actually take the time to look at the budget. Understand it. What part of us spending
175% of what we take in do you not comprehend? What part of the fact that the entire military is about one third of our budget? Realistically we can only reduce that one third by perhaps 50% if we bring all our troops home. So we might eliminate 1/6 or about 15% of our current budget.
75% over budget - 15% still leave us 50% over budget Do you comprehend these facts?
@jam11x There are actually a lot of scientific advances that can be tied to military spending... though I definitely agree that those were very, very expensive achievements.
@jam11x That would require a vote for Ron Paul...and we still would not have money to cover anything but the essentials. Read the budget. We are in fact broke.
If you were to cut the military in it's entirety, you would still have about a Trillion in deficits for that year. And, because the country sits on some of the largest deposits of the majority of the resources that are in demand in the modern world, it would be silly to let our guard down to being colonies again.
@jam11x True. Military still needs money, but not as many billions as we get. It would help if we stopped trying to fight the war on drugs in other countries. We would save literally hundreds of billions of dollars. It would also help if we did not use a broke outdated business model for funding each squadron. Waste happens because people worry about getting enough when we need it. If you don't spend a whole year's funds you get less next year with no promises about need in an emergency.
Ha, so the US was only interested in the particle physics as far as it could create stuff to blow other countries up. Not the whole creation stuff, nah, none of that. :/
@Shisho2k Kinda off base, more or less the people funding the SCC (congress) only wanted it there so that they had a way of scaring the soviets, while providing scientists a tool that could explain everything, and as soon as the ussr collapsed and the cold war ended congress had no need to fund the SCC and took that money elsewhere. So to say that the U Sis interesting in blowing stuff up is wrong the government at that time had that notion, not the US as a whole
