The real reason for that condensation cloud is the sudden drop in air pressure over the water. It is not related to the speed of the plane actually, but it happens most often at transsonic speed. If you want to know the specifics, search on Prandtl–Glauert singularity, that should get you going.
Very cool video!! but he is not actually breaking the sound barrier... He is coming very close, I'm going to assume around 700 mph...You would heaqr a very loud boom that would probably shatter every window on those boats and around
The Blue's put on a heck of a show, I can't wait to see them in two months at the local airshow. The plane in this video was subsonic though. FAA regulations don't allow them to break the sound barrier at airshows.
Jesus Christ. People on youtube are flipping morons. Do you think a seagull is really a quarter the size of the jet? Has anyone ever heard of perspective? Anyone? I guess not. Does anyone bother to notice that the bird flies from IN FRONT of the building? the jet is AT LEAST twice as far as the bird.
yea, no sound barrier broke. the jet is going fast ofcourse. but it's easier to get the "cloud" around the jet when it's by the water its easier to build up pressure waves. if it was going the same speed at a higher altitude, this would not of happend. if it did break the sound barrier at a higher altitude, the speed would be much faster with a sonic boom.
Look. That 'thing' is a bird, and it's not even close to the plane. You can see it's closer to the cameraman than the plane is. Jeez, thing a seagull is as big as half the airplane? :P
its hasnt broken the sound barrier, its flying just under it. that condensation cloud is not the sound barrier, there is actually no barrier at all...until you get to light.
@moogus8000 and you need to know the people before you say i need to learn about physics when i graduated as an airframe and powerplant technician at baker aviation and aeronautical technician at embry riddle university
@Party931southFl Your comment is just showing that your university is worth nothing if they let you graduate with clear ignorance of what is a sound barrier... Think of the distance between the cameraman and the plane before jumping to conclusion... And be more humble... And go back to class...
@moogus8000 The barrier term just refers to how long it took for us to obtain sustained flight at >330 m/s..Those were, in fact, leading edge compression shock waves. The aircraft may not be traveling faster than 330 m/s wrt the ground, but at some point on the aircraft, the flow is greater than mach 1, thus generating the shock wave.
The blue angels don't break the sound barrier at these shows. They only do it in Las Vegas in the desert. Even then they only do it at extremely high altitudes.
its water vapor in the air condensing on the high pressure air created on the leading edge of the wings this effect can occur up to about 20,000 ft beyond that the vapor is too cold to condense the effect occurs as a plane is approaching and breaking the sound barrier the humid air above the water made the effect easier the F-18 was most likely approaching about 700mph
I watch this show every year. Fleet Week in San Francisco where the Blue Angels are the main attraction. Awesome show, but it doesn't actually break the sound barrier. The force of the air that comes off the plane hits the water and makes the vapors shoot up from the water. Its the same idea as breaking the sound barrier, compressing the air, only you can go at slower speeds if you're that close to water.
I was at that show in 2005 and it's true he did not break the sound barrier. My version is on discoveries military channel. they slow it down to show it picking up vapors from the water. I have seen this same clip several times with different titles. Pretty cool.
nowhere near even close to mach 1. the mist was pulled from the lake by the turbulance cause by the speed at which it was travelling accross the water and the engine
I think your right because being that its a SONIC boom it would of completely destroyed every window lol so im guessing that was a 0.7 mach? or a semi sonic boom

no sonic boom there, only the trans sonic shock wave (mach 0.99), would have broke windows and caused damage at that altitude anyway.

This is not breaking the sound barrier
There was no bang, just subsonic roar and the typical mist associated with high speed flight dynamics
If you want to see a supersonic fly by, you will only see it at sea, or performed inland by someone who is trying to get a court martial

You obviously dont know what your talking about. A water cone would not be created from the jet's fly by.
