The real reason for that condensation cloud is the sudden drop in air pressure over the water. It is not related to the speed of the plane actually, but it happens most often at transsonic speed. If you want to know the specifics, search on Prandtl–Glauert singularity, that should get you going.

yea, no sound barrier broke. the jet is going fast ofcourse. but it's easier to get the "cloud" around the jet when it's by the water its easier to build up pressure waves. if it was going the same speed at a higher altitude, this would not of happend. if it did break the sound barrier at a higher altitude, the speed would be much faster with a sonic boom.

i heard one but never seen the jet that did it.

I watch this show every year. Fleet Week in San Francisco where the Blue Angels are the main attraction. Awesome show, but it doesn't actually break the sound barrier. The force of the air that comes off the plane hits the water and makes the vapors shoot up from the water. Its the same idea as breaking the sound barrier, compressing the air, only you can go at slower speeds if you're that close to water.

I was at that show in 2005 and it's true he did not break the sound barrier. My version is on discoveries military channel. they slow it down to show it picking up vapors from the water. I have seen this same clip several times with different titles. Pretty cool.
