Aesop said, "Do not try to ape your betters".. it can be extended to "mock your betters". It draws an even more stringent focus on one's own inadequacies.
Behavior aside, Battle's had a forty-year career & still sings with solid technique & intelligence.
Voigt has so many technical problems that she sounds inconsistent one minute to the next in the same damn night.
Ripping off Regina Resnik's concept, Voigt fails to sing well / use innuendo.
In February 1994, during rehearsals for an upcoming production of La fille du régiment, Battle was said to have subjected her fellow performers to "withering criticism" and made "almost paranoid demands that they not look at her."
And this just "takes the cake." At the time of her termination from the Met, Michael Walsh of Time magazine reported that "the cast of The Daughter of the Regiment applauded when it was told during rehearsal that KATHLEEN BATTLE had been fired."
Really?! My Choirmaster said that she was a joy and generous as a student. I think she was joking so I am siding with you since you personally knew her. So all of that is just show? Dish the 411, please!
From my own "personal" experience I can say: I was lucky to see and hear kathleen battle on two occasions in concert in Vienna. She gave 7 !!! encores and after the concert very patiently signed autographs and was not in any way reluctant to people taking photographs of her and with her. As far as I can tell, towards her audience she was a total pro!
As you said, it's a real shame that everything went downhill for her...
I agree that the bit about battle is sad, because I've always admired her great talent ....but the fact that even collegues publicly participate in the battle bashing, tells how very unpopular she must have been in the business....
The battle bit was tasteless...amazing how much pleasure opera folks get in re-living that incident....perhaps the idea of a black diva being put in her place is just too delicious? I mean think about it...no one talks about Gheorghiu's '07 dismissal from Boheme at Lyric Opera in Chicago....funny how that didn't ruin her stage career....
I am so sick of hearing people keep dredging up this idea that it was because she was black. According to many reports she was just being unprofessional and irrational. People will always turn stories the way they want them to sound. And I am an ethnic person who is fully aware of the inequality towards us in the business, but she was just being ridiculous.

Umm....someone was reading her text. Haha!
She probably had so little time to prepare for it. I love it!
No hate, I promise. It's better than having the stand in front of her face like so many other performances.

She is a truly ghastly woman. I had the enormous displeasure of knowing her as a fellow student, she was a total bitch even then.

Kathleen Battle probably put an axe through the TV when she saw this.
Lovely singing, but, as usual, a hideous set.
