There's quite a few differences between your motor and mine. This is a DC motor, your strimmer motor is likely to be an AC motor. As far as I know, AC motors cannot be regulated (or at least as easy as a DC motor). The best thing to do is either find a DC motor or a 3 phase AC one. Building electronics to control a 3 phase motor is easier than a single phase. It all depends on the amount of power you want out of the motor and the budget you have for electronic supplies.
if yours is an AC motor, it may work. Make sure your dimmer power is greater than motor's. You want to do a lathe? i hope you want to work wood, because metalworking needs a lot more power than a dimmer can give.

could you please tell me would it be possible to do the same thing with a house hold electrical dimmer switch?
Im building a home made electric lathe,and i want to be able to regulate the speed of the garden strimmer motor that im useing!
Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated!
