yesterday i wtched pyaasa and i thght hv seen one of the best movie of my life; then i wtched kaagaz ke phool today itself and to me its even more hard hitting than pyaasa. im in love with guru dutt..his charisma..his mere presence on the screen. but today why has our movie industry degenerated to such a low level..why?
It pains me that S D Burman didn't get the credit he should have got, he is treated only as yet another music director. But I think he is best ever music director in India from 1950s to now.
I have only appreciated rhythm in the song all my life -for the first time the words have taken over the rhythm. The voice is apt for the words and the effect.
@grovevilla groso modo, it is : times have done such cruelty, you & me remained not the same, hearts met each other as if we were never seperated we both were lost in each other, where will we go from here ? don't know ! walking on unknown ways , what are we looking for, knitting dreams every moment ! well, thats it
geeta dutt was so underrated - there is so much pain in her voice in this particular song. and i agree with u rinkichamkar - raj k is sooooo overrated; he's considered a genius - i beg to ask people y? guru dutt's movies and acting tugged at ur heart strings. his "sahib, bibi aur ghulam" remains one of my absolute favourites - the story, the acting and meena kumari!!! need i say more...
maybe if i live long .... i will stand by a lonely river.... and sing 'waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam' hoping that the wind carries the refrain to you... i have a feeling life would for a moment halt... time would stop.... destiny too shall bow its head in deep regret....
What a maestro. And what an ability to dress up pain, to serve one's heart on a platter. Did you guys know that he committed suicide right after the bad reception of the film? The film, of course, went on to win awards, acclaims and accolades for years... and will go on doing so. Makes one wonder how dangerous glorified mediocrity is and how far we have let it get!
Looking at the excellence and refinement of emotions in movies and literature of the time the world over and especially the destructive passion of the people .... intense is the word.
Maybe it was too much for people to bear and hence came in triviality... to the extent of numbing all finer senses to today's current attitude of anything goes.
Its ugly to see and experience but easy onthe nerves
Do we want Gurudutt. Geeta bali and Waheeda back. Can we nurture them?
From 1:33 , Guru Dutt looks like Orson Welles .... Truly the real genius in Indian Cinema.
I know I will get into trouble for this but in my humble opinion, Guru Dutt was far better than Raj Kapoor because he resisted, to the last, the tug of insulting the viewers' intelligence .... You hardly saw frivolity in his movies (except Mr. and Mrs. 55 and even that was an intelligent comedy)
Why should you get into trouble for that bro? Guru Dutt has SERIOUS international renown now and is more respected with the passage of time. Raj K didn't have an original bone in his make-up. Total plagiarist with his poor Charlie Chaplin routines
not to mention the beginning of Kaagaz Ke Phool (right after it shifts from the end scene to the first scene), wherein Guru Dutt sits at a desk with a building background that's a straight up homage to a shot in citizen kane
One of the few, if not only, intellectual giant in Indian film industry. Raj Kapoor made some goog popular films but not match to GD. In acting, I think RK was a disaster. Problem with GD was that his films had very little appeal to Indian masses who loved, and still love, to see film in which people with IQ of more than 20 will die of boredom.
brilliant...just look at the way the song has been picturised...lighting and setup is just awesome..not to talk about the song itself which needless to say is brilliant...thanks for uploading this.
Geeta dutt jee ka bahut hee sureela geet jo ki kan bar bar sunnain ko karetey hain.aisey mehsoos hota hai ki geeta dutt jee chupkey sey aakar merey kanon main aapni sureeli awaz sey is geet ko gunguna rahee hain.merey dost bahut abhut shukriya for uploading so fabulous song which is unique and flawless for ever.
at 1.25 and onwards, we get to see what belongs to God; the highest form of art, as Guru Dutt blinks, and shows us what is sheer magic - what brilliance, what mastery, what a sublime moment...This man is a genius and we are lucky to watch a glimpse of his genius
A deeply haunting/cathartic experience. Geeta Dutt has brought the searing pain/longing/helplessness of kaifi's words to such melancholic intensity....that crying is a some sorta relief! Remarkably the song stunningly foretells the doomed real-life relationship of Gurudutt-peerless Waheeda! Tragedy of tragedy is Geeta Dutt has to undergo the trauma for no fault of hers.....isn't it a travesty that she sings for Waheeda. Great talents, human beings tragically lost early! All we can do is remember
I never thought I will every cry watching this video.......May be a kid I never understood this song or this video....every emotion , every expression and every word is so true .....hatts off to Indian cinema....now days we are really deprived of good cinema. poor us...
I am sure many will agree that when sur, shabd and sangeet reach mutual resonance and the actors lend their own gestures and expressions in equal concord with those three ingredients, then a song becomes lodged in one's memory for ever. Add great photography and what is memorable becomes transformed into a piece of perfection. To the well-earned tributes to the lyricist, the singer, the composer and the actors, let's join our appreciation for the cinematographer(s) here.
Aaah too much! This song never used to bother me that much when I was a teenager, but now I'm much older and so have really loved it makes me cry :.(..
brilliant song - excellent direction and superb use of lighting and soulful music to convey the raging emotions in this masterful scene...applause all around
The actresses in the past used to be so beautiful. The shyness, the innocence, the love dripping out of their pure beauty... unlike the dirty topless actresses of today. I still like the old movies a lot more than the newer ones. The period of 60s thru late 80s was the golden period of Indian cinema. I wish we could bring back that simplicity, that charm back to the bollywood.
I agree with you. No one can express the excence of emotions that we share. Everytime I listen to this song, it just brings tears in my eyes - its so soulful.
One song. Many distinguished people involved. Great team work. Result = perfection.

My answer is, it is a folly to think that money and greed brings out the best in man. Nothing can bring the best out of you, unless you are inspired fom within the heart to create something that people would recognise. I guess, thats the point of Gurudutt in film Pyaasa. He did no write poems to earn money, but he wanted to put his heart and his feelings before the masses of what he saw of the world around him.
I am big fan of Guru dutt. He was great director.
Today,In Our Movie We Only see foreign location,Double meaning,So many Moronic drones actor/actress.
Levity/ Remakes of film is one proof that how the worst position of indian cinema.

Beautifully sung by Geeta Dutt.. Many singers including Latta has tried to recreate the same magic but they all were unsucessful.
Look at the cinematography.. beautiful.Even with the limitation of technology guru dutt and team has made wonders..
Story was way ahead of that time..
In fact it is believed that Guru dutt predicted his own tragic end..
One must see the final scene of the movie when guru dutt dies on the director chair..
Amazing..

1) What a sweet torment time has wreaked
you are not you and i am not me, as we once knew ourselves
once the restless souls embraced each other
as if they were never apart
only to be lost in the mist of time
after only a few steps at each other's side

What a sweet torment time has wreaked on us you are not you and i am not me as we once knew ourselves
where this path leads us, no one knows
moving steps stir up the dust but no destination beacons
what our longing heart yearns we never know
yet desires keep weaving the dazzling shroud of magical dreams

More compelling once you learn Of Geetas marriage to Guru Dutt and him then falling for Ms. Rahman in ral life.
Can you imagine what wonders would have been created if he'd later been able to do a full film in colour?
A man that was beyond is time coupled with prophetic lyrics that resonate today nd acting and photography forever embedded upon ones heart and mind.
If one made such fluid poetry today would people go to watch? Unfortunately I doubt it.
Thanks for the memories Guru Saab.
