Bernard Herrmann would have done a beautiful job with this film, yes, but you can't argue with Tiomkins' beautiful use of Debussy's music. I cannot listen to "Nocturnes," for instance, without thinking of this film, "Afternoon of a Faun," "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair." Beautifully, beautifully done.
Written by composer Bernard Herrmann who was originally hired to write the background score, but due to constant production delays had to eventually back out. Too bad. Perfect film for Herrmann's superb talent to draw from.
