Eternal Darkness is probably one of the best games I've ever played. I mean, Resident Evil is good, but compared to the story, writing, controls, and general feeling or urgency and horror of ED, RE does not stand a chance...
Also, the idea of playing a heavily-armed, combat-oriented protagonist never really made RE any scarier... I mean, most protagonists in ED are just everymen. Playing a regular guy makes it much more frightening.
wow that is a whole lot of bitching about classic survival horror.
1.It's a REMAKE.
2. You have to use stronger weapons on tougher enemies so it's "hard"?
3. Your not supposed to be able to save on the fly anywhere, same goes with inventory spacing, that's why there's a chest and a typewriter in every save room, which is the closest thing your gonna get to a "check-point".
4. Don't need a "health" interface, when your character starts limping and carrying their side is a pretty good sign.
Gamers today are so f*cking lazy today. The whole point of survival horror games is that you DONT WANT to DIE....therefore automatic save and checkpoints are a complete waste in these type of games. Having to actually search for ink ribbons etc in the old RE games was part of the adventure.
And wtf was all that bitchin about not having enough ammo in RE....well what kind of fun would a survival horror game be if you were well equipped. I think you´re missing the whole point of RE.
Gamers today are so f*cking lazy today. The whole point of survival horror games is that you DONT WANT to DIE....therefore automatic save and checkpoints are a complete waste in these type of games. Having to actually search for ink ribbons etc in the old RE games was part of the adventure.
resident evil is better because it follows a story line in the games like 1,2,3 also now theve added better graphics and the tvirus has expanded and now there even more fucked up ED i played this game 4 30 mins and i got bored and it wasnt even scary
I could accept the first six complaints, but what kind of stupid excuse is having magic? So what? Survival Horror is about being weak and surviving the best you can, and the magic helps to balance out the game when the enemies become much more difficult, magic doesn't define a genre, design. And technically, BOTH of these games, and almost all horror games ever are Action/Adventure games.
Oh god, I never played the remake to Resident Evil as I just figured it was the same game as before just with better graphic detail. I would have screamed my fucking head off on the first encounter with a crimson head out of pure fright.
i never played a resident evil game beside 4 and 5. your views on Resident Evil are very biased and unfair. little enemies, shitload of enemies, constrictive spaces? umm, it's survival horror and those 3 things further enhance the dread/scare factor. your just a fanboy
Eternal Darkness is NOT a survival horror! Resident Evil IS!
This is why in resident evil you get lost, have limited space and limited saves, and find your self stuck on some parts of it, thats the point. In eternal darkness, your goal is not to get out of a mansion, its a PSYCHOLOGICAL horror. Hope i cleared that up.
Oh, and as much as I loved eternal darkness (i personally thought it was better), your showing a really biased point of view in this video.
Everything you mentioned wrong with resident evil, the controls, the camera views, no visible health, the huge mansion, not knowing what to do, limited inventory, restricting your saves to the ink ribbons you collect and low ammo is what makes the game both scary and a traditional survival horror. Maybe a lot of gamers this generation don't like it cause they're use to all out action games but i would consider it as one of my all time favorites.
@R10FCB I completely agree with you. I hate it when people look for action in video games. When I play those games, I'm left holding a trigger down with a bunch of things jumping at me. I personally prefer games that make you think and (like both eternal darkness and resident evil) mess with your head.
Eternal Darkness Disapointed me all they have is just scary voiced actors but it a great gameplay but not SURVIVAL!! I mean come on magic? Thats retarded..Resident Evil was okay hate the control but it a hardcore survival and thats what most people want.. a game where you die constantly like Dead Space..So Resident Evil win for Hardcore Survival..
@tribilyan@tribilyan I agree, Eternal Darkness to me is the perfect survival horror because there are way too many sanity effects that you will never see coming, and Resident Evil remake is such a disappointment because nothing was fixed, only updated the graphics.
People just say Resident Evil is better because they're such unrelenting fanboys who won't admit to anything that's scarier the series used to be. They just don't see that Eternal Darkness is TRULY a work of art!
you're not showing much wrong with eternal darkness, I also think that the idea of getting lost and having limited inventory slots really brins the idea of SURVIVAL HORROR into place
Having a limited inventory is not a completely bad thing, but it's a pain in the ass when I have to go back several rooms to put away an item just to collect a key or use an herb which may not have necessary needed to be stored in the first place.
In general I'm not a fan of the game logic that a key takes up exactly the same amount of space as a shotgun. Besides don't these guys have their own Keys? Probably on hooks they can attach new keys too?
i never played eternal darkness but i played resi eveil 4,i would love if there was a remake for the wii... like grafix wise and alot of new things, but that prob wont happen and if it does, itl take ages so il just buy this game for the gamecub
Eternal Darkness offer more fun, more gameplay, and more scary effects. Only the fact the game isn't famous and have a lot of REALLY STUPID fans ruins it.
And guys yes, you are stupid, EXPECIALLY in the moment you say RE is a scary game.
Seriously, I agree with SmokenAces, mostly all you complained about in RE was parts of the game that they put in to make it a survival horror game. Eternal Darkness is more like an action horror, with creepy effects.
I own and love'em both...slightly more ED...because of the controls, level and mechanical design....not to mention Cam Clarke,David Hayter,Paul Eiding and Debi Mae West are in the game
It's called "static camera angles" duh. It's supposed to be like that so you can only hear them coming toward you its part of the horror, and your character limps when low on health eliminating the need for a HUD health bar. Ooh, limited ammo, small spaces, can only carry a # of items. No shit, it's a survival horror.Your bitching about it like its a designer flaw, when its really just the style of the game to enhance fear. Fuck this review, fail.
Dude, dude..great review but it I think your being a little to bitchy about RE 1. I agree with some aspects but it sounds to me that RE isn't just your game and that's why your nagging at little things. Both games still rock
The enemies in ED (LOL) aren't really that scary but the sanity effects really screw with your head and can just creep the hell out of you sometimes. I saw a quote from a review of ED that said something like, "most gamers can easily kill their way through waves of bloodthirsty zombies but tell them their save file has been erased and watch the palms begin to sweat." It doesnt actually delete them for realz though.
@shadowfreeze88 Actually, I think the designs for the Chattur'gha Zombies are one of the scarier designs, and while Horrors may not be the scary in appearance, they can be a little frightening to fight if you don't have a good enough weapon or are on your last leg.
That's because Eternal Darkness separated from Nintendo, and has only made one game other than Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Resident Evil, hasn't aged particularly well, though, as a series, has grown to adapt to different styles on the 360, PS3 and Wii.
y do u bitch so much about resident evil, its like zelda, its not about action its about being smart, avoiding enemys and useing logic to solve the puzzles
@ultimatefighter8888 I'll admit he did complain too much about RE, but it does have some issues and the ones it does have do tend to have a stronger effect on the gameplay where as ED doesn't really have that many.
no matter what if RE is a remake on GC were still talking about a ps1 game, the only thing that changes in REmake are the graphics, cutscenes, and unlockables, everything else(gameplay, controls, fun, horror, difficulty, etc) is the same, you re comparing a GC game to a PS1 game.
also if you re gonna make a ___vs____ video you should talk like you re from both sides, talk about the bad and good things of both games.
@ JunDageki actually eternal darkness was originally supposed to be made for the nintendo 64 but they ended up making it for the gamecube at the last minute.. so it's pretty much a N64 game(eternal darkness) vs a gamecube game(resident evil)
The RE control design was difficult to master? Umm... no. And i'd like to point out that as the dungeons in eternal darkness became confusing later in the game, the later areas in RE actually became easier. Stop bashing a classic!
And i can't help but think a lot of your complaints about resident evil stem from sucking at the game. You don't have to 'save constantly' in the later half of the game if you don't constantly get killed.
The issue with trying to stay alive in the latter half of the game though was there were a lot of instant death hazards and many enemies who can get a lot of cheap shots off on you.
I love both these games! I picked up ED used because I was bored and the cover looked kinda cool. I wasn't really expecting much but I was totally blown away. The sanity effect was a real trip. It's really one of the best games ever! RE is probably the best looking game on the Gamecube and was fun but scary. I really enjoyed it but the difficulty threw me off a bit. It sucked having to run from zombies to save ammo. Damn those crimson heads to hell!!!
I'm not going to agree with you on the game design for Resident Evil, you weren't supposed to see your health on screen to create more suspense and the mansion was supposed to be confusing for two reasons 1: an actual reason for maps 2: it was mostly a puzzle game after all, wouldn't be very fun if it was very linear and easy to get the next puzzle
pretty good review im just glad you chose the RE remake And not RE4 which for some strange reason no one will say a negative thing about, but any anyways correct me if im wrong but it seems the only reason you said Eternal was better Was because RE is harder. though i agree on some points (inventory and backtracking yeah)
...moments (LOOK OUT, IT'S A MONSTER!!) but it had some moments of voice acting that was well done. Like if you let Chris die from poisen when your playing as Rebecca, and she finds him dead and crys over him. That was well done. But, I just said what I think. You said what you think, we can't all think the same thing. So I won't freak out on you for sayin Resident Evil Remake is not the best FUCKING GAME EVER. LOL. Good review ;)
That I agree with XD. At least it's worth a lot of laughs :P STOP IT, DON'T OPEN THAT DOOR! You was almost a Jill sandwhich LOOK AT THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONSTERS!!!!!
sorry you made this video long ago but you only commented on it a month ago so, how come you just said the back things about resident evil and how its better in eternal darkness?? because i was going to purchase it but all you said was nasty things and why its better in eternal darkness.
why didnt you say nice things too??? i find that pretty dosey actually, well anyway maybe you could say something nice anothertime.... unless there isnt anything nice to say. (sorry)
I think you was a tiny bit to hard on Resident Evil. The controls can be a bit strange when you start, but you can get use to them rather fast. You can run past zombies rather easy, and most of the time I end up with one hundred hand gun bullets near the start of the game. Chris also isn't that anoying to play as. I always play as him, I've played as Jill once, but it didn't seem to be as much fun as Chris, since it was rather easy. The voice acting wasn't THAT bad.Sure, it had it's...
What you are missing is that the camera views and lack of not seeing life will help cause panic while playing and contributes to the horror attribute of the game and what I got from this is that you Love Eternal Darkness and don't find a challenge as fun as something you can speed through
i thought that all of them contributed alot towards the main story, 3 with nemisis, 1 with the failed attemt, cept 4 i just like leon. and umbrella chronicals which you may have said, but that is deep as well as the rest. It is the next gen games that cloud peoples minds
umm no they all had a great story, considering they all intertwine. And even tho it sounds like im rly pissed, im not im just trying to get my point across
0, 2, Wesker's Reports, and Code Veronica were the only things that actually seemed like they had depth, Having all the stories intertwine isn't a necessaril accomplishment, it's not like the Stories are massive in their own right. (Like MGS) Of course these stories still make more sense than the Chronological-ness of the Megaman Series.
well if you didn't play the the first game before any of the others came out, the story wouldn't have been predictable at all. plus the story was amazing throughout 6 games so far, the ones for ps2 exclusively don't count they're just lame. The story for ed may have been rly good but the re seiries was equally or a little worse and had a better gane play, with challenging puzzles and im over using commas now
ur an idiot, the point of the re camera and map and inventory and saves. is to be challenging, which is way better than an easy, simple gameplay that has a terrible story. I know, every1 has their own opinion, but im right(once again, u must hate a challenge with an incredible story.)+ all u did was bash re which as colmMICHAEL said is not the point of a review
Actually I found the Story of RE to be ridiculously predictable. I hate what I call: Bullshit Challenge. You know, like how in Action 52, most of the games can't be beaten because of all the glitches, or how in the new Sonic Games, you die because you can't see the platform.
You just spent 10 mins saying how much you hate Resident Evil and how much you love Eternal Darkness. The point of comparing games is to say the good AND bad stuff about them but you are obviously biased. Maybe you had a scary experience with Resi?
Your review is informative and helpful. However I feel like you are a little too biased against REmake, which I find to be an amazing game. RE is not a combat game. Having tons of ammo would destroy the suspense and fear. RE3 tried that, and it didn't work well. Your voice was also a little annoying with your lisp speech impediment. You should really see a doctor about that.
You know for a guy that sounds like he's harboring a massive amounts of spit in his cheeks you certainly have raised a few good points about Resident Evil. Each point is utter bullshit, but points were raised none the less. So allow me to set a few records straight. Now I've been watching this little clip for nearly 5 minutes and already I can tell where you cock is. And that is in the ass of Eternal Darkness. Now Resident Evil's mansion is not elaborant. You can beat the game in less than an
Wow only people who have never played a Resident Evil game complain about the controls. Any resident evil veteran can know how to work the controls almost instantly, all of the things you talk shit about in resident evil is what defined it, Oh and which franchise is way bigger huh?
I know how to control just fine, but think about it, is EVERYONE a Resident Evil veteran, it's also annoying as hell trying to maneuver in those damn annoying confined spaces, and I wouldn't mind the low ammo, except you have almost no way of guarentee-ing headshots, excluding the way that will more than likely kill you.
How much skill can be involved in aiming for a zombie's head?
they move slow and stagger, sometimes get caught in between objects, and you can hear them if they're behind corners because they moan, so you could just pick them off from a distance. Using the knife however, does take skill, Im actually able to clear out rooms with it.
that's why in RE4 they had to use faster enemies, and have enemies throw stuff at you as well.
True, though I wonder why they can't up with anything original for RE5. In general I'm not a fan of games with Slow enemies, because theres too many moments where I think to myself: "I could totally have done that blindfolded on one leg with my arms tied behind"
well.. can't do it blinded folded with narrow halls now can you?
I guess that's why they added narrow halls so it's harder to just run around the enemies.
Personally, I love re, but not because of the zombies. I suppose that'd why I was able to adapt to re4 so quickly without really missing the zombies. I hope they never use zombies again, honestly.
But I do understand you on the controls and tank-like movement, I first played RE2 back in 98, and I had no idea how to control the players. But this was a lot worst than Remake, because, you started out on the streets full of zombies, opposed to a large threat-free dining room where you were able to test the controls, and figure them out yourself. I remember trying to push the X button to fire.. lol
and when I tried to turn my character he would only spin around.
I don't believe they plan on using Zombies again for a while, while I would have loved if they managed to have an African street full of Crimson Heads, they appear to be using Parasites once more.
They're both Survival Horror action games, they're very similar! Besides you can always compare games, like Halo to Call of Duty, or Tekken 3 to Soul caliber.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, anyone can have a similar opinion as well. For example: I believe God of War and Gaylo 3 are the most over rated games of all time. I'm sure there's somebody who agrees with me, but most people don't.
yes I did play resident evil remake and it was pain in the ass but it was scary as hell but the Eternal Darkness is why better then resident evil remake
Ohh exactly 10 min video. Resident Evil had great pre-rendered levels. Resident Evil was just a plain horror game... it wouldn't be as scary without those hard controls and type-writers. They did a good job on creating a "survival situation", but I'm sure they just ignored the fact that RE would be boring. Good job with all of the extra clips, comedy and sound effects.
but... BUT!.... u can NOT skip cutscenes in Eternal Darkness !!! : O

I did, or at least Tried to.
BTW Way, Resident Evil on the Gamecube is about (What game reviewers estimate to be) 70% Different from the original.
Carlitonsp1 2 years ago
@ JunDageki actually eternal darkness was originally supposed to be made for the nintendo 64 but they ended up making it for the gamecube at the last minute.. so it's pretty much a N64 game(eternal darkness) vs a gamecube game(resident evil)

The RE control design was difficult to master? Umm... no. And i'd like to point out that as the dungeons in eternal darkness became confusing later in the game, the later areas in RE actually became easier. Stop bashing a classic!
jackrothwell 2 years ago
And i can't help but think a lot of your complaints about resident evil stem from sucking at the game. You don't have to 'save constantly' in the later half of the game if you don't constantly get killed.
jackrothwell 2 years ago
The issue with trying to stay alive in the latter half of the game though was there were a lot of instant death hazards and many enemies who can get a lot of cheap shots off on you.
Carlitonsp1 2 years ago
I love both these games! I picked up ED used because I was bored and the cover looked kinda cool. I wasn't really expecting much but I was totally blown away. The sanity effect was a real trip. It's really one of the best games ever! RE is probably the best looking game on the Gamecube and was fun but scary. I really enjoyed it but the difficulty threw me off a bit. It sucked having to run from zombies to save ammo. Damn those crimson heads to hell!!!
toolslave 2 years ago
I'm not going to agree with you on the game design for Resident Evil, you weren't supposed to see your health on screen to create more suspense and the mansion was supposed to be confusing for two reasons 1: an actual reason for maps 2: it was mostly a puzzle game after all, wouldn't be very fun if it was very linear and easy to get the next puzzle
kornymunky 2 years ago
pretty good review im just glad you chose the RE remake And not RE4 which for some strange reason no one will say a negative thing about, but any anyways correct me if im wrong but it seems the only reason you said Eternal was better Was because RE is harder. though i agree on some points (inventory and backtracking yeah)

...moments (LOOK OUT, IT'S A MONSTER!!) but it had some moments of voice acting that was well done.
WolfLink95 3 years ago
The Voice acting in this game is poor, not absolutely awful, the original however probably has the worst acting ever.
Carlitonsp1 3 years ago

(sorry)
ElementalHeroAMW 2 years ago
The game is very atmospheric and can be fun if you get a complete handle on the controls.
The biggest issue with this game though, is the poor replayability.
Carlitonsp1 2 years ago
Oh i see hmm thanks
ElementalHeroAMW 2 years ago
I think you was a tiny bit to hard on Resident Evil. The controls can be a bit strange when you start, but you can get use to them rather fast. You can run past zombies rather easy, and most of the time I end up with one hundred hand gun bullets near the start of the game. Chris also isn't that anoying to play as. I always play as him, I've played as Jill once, but it didn't seem to be as much fun as Chris, since it was rather easy. The voice acting wasn't THAT bad.Sure, it had it's...

What you are missing is that the camera views and lack of not seeing life will help cause panic while playing and contributes to the horror attribute of the game and what I got from this is that you Love Eternal Darkness and don't find a challenge as fun as something you can speed through
EvilCashew 3 years ago 3
i thought that all of them contributed alot towards the main story, 3 with nemisis, 1 with the failed attemt, cept 4 i just like leon. and umbrella chronicals which you may have said, but that is deep as well as the rest. It is the next gen games that cloud peoples minds
doctorvsmaster 3 years ago
umm no they all had a great story, considering they all intertwine. And even tho it sounds like im rly pissed, im not im just trying to get my point across
doctorvsmaster 3 years ago
0, 2, Wesker's Reports, and Code Veronica were the only things that actually seemed like they had depth, Having all the stories intertwine isn't a necessaril accomplishment, it's not like the Stories are massive in their own right. (Like MGS) Of course these stories still make more sense than the Chronological-ness of the Megaman Series.
Carlitonsp1 3 years ago
well if you didn't play the the first game before any of the others came out, the story wouldn't have been predictable at all. plus the story was amazing throughout 6 games so far, the ones for ps2 exclusively don't count they're just lame. The story for ed may have been rly good but the re seiries was equally or a little worse and had a better gane play, with challenging puzzles and im over using commas now
doctorvsmaster 3 years ago 2
The only one which had an in depth Story was Code Veronica

Carlitonsp1 3 years ago
ur an idiot, the point of the re camera and map and inventory and saves. is to be challenging, which is way better than an easy, simple gameplay that has a terrible story. I know, every1 has their own opinion, but im right(once again, u must hate a challenge with an incredible story.)+ all u did was bash re which as colmMICHAEL said is not the point of a review
doctorvsmaster 3 years ago
Actually I found the Story of RE to be ridiculously predictable. I hate what I call: Bullshit Challenge. You know, like how in Action 52, most of the games can't be beaten because of all the glitches, or how in the new Sonic Games, you die because you can't see the platform.
Carlitonsp1 3 years ago
You just spent 10 mins saying how much you hate Resident Evil and how much you love Eternal Darkness. The point of comparing games is to say the good AND bad stuff about them but you are obviously biased. Maybe you had a scary experience with Resi?
colmMICHAEL 3 years ago

Fade2Dark 3 years ago
Wow only people who have never played a Resident Evil game complain about the controls. Any resident evil veteran can know how to work the controls almost instantly, all of the things you talk shit about in resident evil is what defined it, Oh and which franchise is way bigger huh?
madapaka911 3 years ago
I know how to control just fine, but think about it, is EVERYONE a Resident Evil veteran, it's also annoying as hell trying to maneuver in those damn annoying confined spaces, and I wouldn't mind the low ammo, except you have almost no way of guarentee-ing headshots, excluding the way that will more than likely kill you.
Carlitonsp1 3 years ago
actually.. that's the point of the game.
to conserve ammo.
Fade2Dark 3 years ago
By not being allowed to use your ammunition properly?
Carlitonsp1 3 years ago
define properly?
you're able to shoot freely when or how you'd like.
unlike, final fantasy for example, you can only attack when the game says it's your turn.
Or perhaps you mean a targeting system? Aiming for head shots throughout the game would defeat the purpose of conserving ammunition.
Fade2Dark 3 years ago
No, it would allow you to do is conserve ammo by gaining skill
Carlitonsp1 3 years ago
think about it for a second.
Fade2Dark 3 years ago
True, though I wonder why they can't up with anything original for RE5. In general I'm not a fan of games with Slow enemies, because theres too many moments where I think to myself: "I could totally have done that blindfolded on one leg with my arms tied behind"
Carlitonsp1 3 years ago
well.. can't do it blinded folded with narrow halls now can you?
I guess that's why they added narrow halls so it's harder to just run around the enemies.
Personally, I love re, but not because of the zombies. I suppose that'd why I was able to adapt to re4 so quickly without really missing the zombies. I hope they never use zombies again, honestly.
Fade2Dark 3 years ago
But I do understand you on the controls and tank-like movement, I first played RE2 back in 98, and I had no idea how to control the players. But this was a lot worst than Remake, because, you started out on the streets full of zombies, opposed to a large threat-free dining room where you were able to test the controls, and figure them out yourself. I remember trying to push the X button to fire.. lol
and when I tried to turn my character he would only spin around.
Fade2Dark 3 years ago
I don't believe they plan on using Zombies again for a while, while I would have loved if they managed to have an African street full of Crimson Heads, they appear to be using Parasites once more.

They're both Survival Horror action games, they're very similar! Besides you can always compare games, like Halo to Call of Duty, or Tekken 3 to Soul caliber.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, anyone can have a similar opinion as well. For example: I believe God of War and Gaylo 3 are the most over rated games of all time. I'm sure there's somebody who agrees with me, but most people don't.
Carlitonsp1 3 years ago
Actually I agree with you on gaylo 3 and god of war.
I was a big fan of Halo 1, but when halo 2 was released.. biggest dissapointment.. Halo 3 was better than the second, but stil, was trash.
Fade2Dark 3 years ago
Gaylo three is not a bad game, it's just too generic and relies on no thought at all, unlike Bioshock and Goldeneye
Carlitonsp1 3 years ago
No, but Halo 3 did have an awful storyline becuase.. it continued form the second. they should have redid the second one, honestly.
I played very little of bioshock, very unique game, deserves points for creativity, and Goldeneye.. was an all time instant classic.
