Yeah the cars got really dangerous, 650+ BHP, 0-60mph/100kmph on gravel was between 2 and 2.5 seconds.

They banned them cos they were too fast n dangerous n apparently, i not sure if this is true or not but a few rally drivers were killed in group b rally cars n when they discovered tht the deaths were caused by the cars for being too powerful, they decided to ban them for tht reason. Shame they've banned them cos they're cooler than the typical Subaru impreza or mitsibushi evo u see on WRC.

People started dying - drivers and spectators alike. Driving 500+hp cars through forests and city streets lined with thousands of people who think it's fine to crowd around the exit of high speed corners is dicey at best.

Obviously the loss of life was terrible - Toivonen's accident in particular was horrendous, a redux of early 1970s F1 accidents.

But the end of this kind of motorsport, traded for the current WRC - a locked-down spec feeder series on a mild sugar high... that's a loss too.

Just look at the jumping Audi at 0:12-1:16, it had so much power that it did a little wheelie when it landed. Today's rally cars can't even dream about doing that.

Stupid spectators ruining that era. Anyone would agree this was much more fun to watch. Bring it back and tell the spectators to bugger off the sharp corners.

Though I doubt drivers these days have enough balls to use the gas pedal like this.

I think you're selling the drivers short - and given that no drivers now have the opportunity to drive any such cars, I can't see how you'd come to that conclusion.

My guess is that one Mr. K. Raikkonen is not lacking at all in the brass attachments category...

These sound like formulas. Oldies comments, Alen, Vatanen, Mikkola etc. have all said that it took a crazy man to drive one of those, but is sure was a pleasure as well! Nearly imposible to imagine. Drive practically an F1 on narrow roads. One mistake on a bad spot. You and about 100 others are dead. That was driving on the edge!

Modern wrc cars are not anything like as fast. Modern rally cars are limited to 300 hp, these monsters had up to 600 hp. They really were special drivers in those days.

Sorry but wrc cars nowdays are faster than group b cars. suspensions, brakes, transmissions and tires are so much better than back in group b days. For example on ouninpohja hannu mikkola drove s1 128km/h average speed and wrc cars max average 132km/h on fastest stage of world...
