  • lmao the ending made me laugh! (the video, not the movie lol)

  • Comment removed

  • amazing review, i heard about this film so much, and i love Takashi Miike, so i went out yday and brought this on DVD, and i was totally blown away ! an amazing film !

  • i must be stupid cause after i finished watching the movie i felt lost

  • lmfao at the end ahahaha

  • Audition is the best horror movie ever!

  • Miss your videos, Roger! I'm glad your family is maintaining your channel so Youtube won't take it down. RIP.

  • make that Victim.

  • SWAN YOU ARE THE FREAKING BEST!

Every time i hear about a japanese horror movie, and i want to see the trailer, YOU are there with a review.

    You're fantastic.

  • This movie is amazing. The only movie that scared me to tears. ---- Wow.. Almost a year <3 Rodger. Rest in peace.

  • I just watched this today in your honor, Rodger. Thanks for the recommendation, and R.I.P

  • @stubby019 R.I.P ?

  • i hope that thare is no amercain remake. america ruins overseas films. btw im native and i like miike films

  • i think that the whole movie played in the guys head and he is really just in the bag remembering how he got in there and mabey in the effort of comfort himself thinks about what would have happend if his son came home and killed her.

I think that because at the end the girl repeats a conversation they had in the restaurant even though her neck was broken what mostly kills you instantly.

  • I agree with the review and thought along the same line. Nowadays it seems people want "in your face horror" to scare you up a little bit. It takes a true horror fan patience to take it all in for a pay off. Very good review.

  • the movie audition was terrible.

  • i liked this movie. Its like a wire thats being tightened and tightened and during the final 15 minutes, the wire snaps. You can feel that tension rising up and the last few minutes totallly disturbed the shit out of me. You have some really nice j-horror reviews here btw, im subbing xD

  • This was the first review I saw from him a long time ago. I cant belive he died...

    RIP.

  • I watched this film a couple of years ago. Brutal!!

  • And i think i just shat a brick when i saw the shadow of his hand at 04:00. That shadow + review of horror masterpiece + Super creepy music = lots of bricks

  • comments about fish....Im about to watch it with my brother and the anticapation is killing me

  • one missed call was my first Takashi Miike watch, but this was the 2nd one i had indulged in...it was kinda out there and i almost revisited my dinner during on particular scene =.=,but it has a very good plot and i liked how you reviewed it. Thank you

    ^.^

  • brilliant movie

  • It's not saying anything about society and you'll find that the director actually said this.

  • I didn't really understand the ending.

  • @SaucisseMerguez If you watch the movie, you´ll understand.

  • @IbanezKing666 I did but, I dont understand how he gets tortured so bad, and then he just wakes up and its like wtf was that about then ? If its just a dream whats the point ? SOrry maybe im missing something.

  • @SaucisseMerguez Alright, we know that Miike likes also ghost stories: I have the theory that his dead wife, seen in the restaurant, warned him by telling him she ain´t " good for him " and what would happen. I think it was a sort of " vision ", that Aoyama just ignored, thinking that it was nonsense. While he is paralyzed, he figures out what happened, finding out the relations between the bar, the composition, and all the others proofs he saw.

  • This film is great. The story is kind of sad on both sides. If you ask me

  • Nice reference at the end XD "Kiriririri~..."

  • One of the best films ever..

  • Awesome, I enjoy watching your videos :)

I've seen all these J Horror movies.

  • Just watched it on Netflix and thought it was pretty cool. RIP man.

  • He died?!

  • Why did he had to die....best man in the whole world... :(

  • good review :)

  • First ever video i watched from you rodger. I got into japenese horror because of you and i respect your judgement on movies and passion for japenese culture. I loved your youtube videos so much that i began to even consider you a friend. Your weekly videos made me happy and inspirational to go to japan sometime. Now i've seen all the japenese horror films cause of you. Now i need to go to japan and i will do in on your behalf.

R.I.P. to the most genuine guy on youtube, i will miss you

  • finally getting on 1-10 sacale.....

  • have you heard they are remaking Oldboy, another awesome asian movie.... but the american version is gonna have will smith as the main character.

  • @__@ That looks fantastic!

  • I'm more impressed with this every time I watch it. It's a mature horror movie--which is a very rare species indeed. The impact is not so much terror as sorrow. Once you get past the gore, you really feel for the Yamazaki character. Her sense of love and affection has been warped by abuse into this twisted alternate reality.

  • eres un imbecil

  • LOL at kitty kitty.

  • @LittlePinky82 It's not a kitty but foxy :P He's named Miles or Tails and he is one of Sonic the Hedgehog's friends.

  • My friend i just watched this amazing movie and i was very impressed. Your 100% right about everything you said a true masterpiece.

  • Yep. I just finished it as well this evening and I loved it. OMG. This is a classic. It's so funny watching these old video's of you Rodger. :) And yes I agree that if you just skip to the ending what's the point? Just to see some violence? It won't be powerful. I even like the dog lol. I'll have to rewatch it again. And in Japanese horror they have a way of getting different interpretations and I like that about their movies how they're very real life. I love Takashi Miike!

  • @LittlePinky82 I think the point is to show unfair relationship between men and women. For example, Aoyama expects his eventual bride to be an innocent virgin, but he makes the candidates to take off their clothes and answer on intimate questions. Other men in this movie have even more dirty secrets from the past. Violence is only the revenge for that.

  • it's not really a scary/horror movie its actually just creepy/psycho movie, your just waiting for the scary part to come but then it doesn't. You expect it to come at some part but it doesn't and it throws you off when you don't expect it that much the scary parts come out.

  • THIS WAS GROSS OMFG HAHA

  • this is kind of film that only can be born in JAPAN

  • I hope there is never an English remake. If there is one it better be done right or they'd ruin it like they did "One Missed Call."

  • @LittlePinky82 Don't forget Ring 2 , the uninvited, Grudge 2, One Missed Call 2 and 3... only to name a few.

  • ...and Dark Water remake which wasn't even a little scary... but the worst crap was The Grudge 3.

  • omg, why do these guys find joy in ruining asian horror? Seriously?

  • I think they have IQ on vegetable level and they judge us by their measure... so they make movies for vegetables.

  • pretty much >/

  • Cuz all thats going through their minds is "AMERICA FUCK YEAH!"

  • @LittlePinky82

    ...or the grudge.

  • I have a question on the movie, and if anyone has the answer please e mail me. But, here's the scene I can't make sense of;

(Spoiler) When he drinks the drug laced alcohol and they do the scenes where they show the content of the bag and the vomit scene, WHY IS AOYAMA THERE?

Is it him coming to the realization of what she did from listening to all the stories of how her job references were murdered just as he is falling into unconsciousness? I don't get why he is in the vomit scene.

  • My thoughts: Just got done with the movie. First, I was watching the ending going "that's the twist? You know where I've seen that? The cover." But I liked the movie. One of my favorite horrors (Albeit, I've only seen, like, five.) My big problem is that it's paradoxical that it's such a relaxing film... Until the last fifteen minutes. Note: It's my first J-Horror.

  • It really doesn't need a twist. It has a moment where you believe it is a cop out twist, when he has that glmmer of hope for Aoyama, where you think its a dream. It relaxes you and gives relief making when we return to the real film more horrific. Audition is not about twists its about contrast between comfort and gruesome

  • @Asylum07MasterMadman oh i thought it really was a dream he just passed out when she was sticking the needles in him?

  • And you are right. This is not a horror but a thriller, and it is very brutal an gore. No ghost in this movie, only the psychopath with serious reason to bloody revenge. Ending: the "bad guy" is defeated, but there were no "good guys" - everyone had a dirty secret and "bad guy" was once a victim of them.

  • 5:44 lolz

  • Hey,

have you done the Great Yokai War yet?

  • In my opinion the scariest moment in this film is the last moment where after the whole thing the two are reaching out to each other. Even after all the hatred that has passed between the two there is still love there. This reaction from both of these individuals I found more unnerving then any other piece of the movie

  • As a female I didn't find this movie frightening. But truly this movie for men it is a horror. The directing was very well done, I really bonded to the nice man/widow husband. Which makes the end only very sad to me, tragic. But not scary.

  • is there a lot of gore? haha, theres a lot of movies you recommend but im hesitant to get it since i really dont like gore...

  • this is proper proper gorey..

I wont ruin it for u

But at one point.. he cant move only feel pain and she sticks needles in his eyes and cuts his feet off with a cheese wire.. :O

  • not cheese wire, it's a guitar string

  • its cheese wire... The official movie review says ul never look at cheese wire in the same way again..

and a guitar string wouldnt have handles and couldnt cut through skin let alone bone...

  • Oh, I see.... thank you for correcting me!

  • theres only gore at the near ending of the movie...it's not that much (i think) but there are a lot of fucked up things that happen that are not gory at all

  • I was all like, "WHAT'S IN THE BAG? WHAT'S IN THE BAG? OH, SWEET LORD!!!" when I saw this movie. It scared me so much when it moved the first time I almost passed out. That noise it makes, oh shit.

  • Ahahaha! The first time I saw this review I thought you were saying, "Kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty." Now that I've seen the movie I get it...and it sorta creepy even with a stuffed animal.

  • Definitely the scariest movie i've seen, and it didn't even need any jump out moments like the grudge. the ending flipping freaked me out! The main character was a really nice guy, I actually felt sorry for him at the end. The build up was crazy. At the end I kept on saying "oh no!" and I covered the tv with a pillow lol.

Wouldn't call it a masterpiece though, some of the editing was quite bad, at the dinner scene you can see when they edited two clips of dialogue together.

  • i totaly agree jedsterg, the main character was a nice guy.

  • I thought it was amazing and really scary too! But the dialogue edit I thought was on purpose because later they show the extended version of what the director didn't include. It makes you realize that there is something missing in the story and you keep on thinking throughout the whole movie. Definitely one of my favorites ever.

  • lol, now i've seen the film i get the ending of this vid with the tails doll *shudders* that was a disturbing scene XD

  • omg i saw this movie yesterday on zone horror of all places (just to explain the zone horror channel usually only has really old or very cheap horror films, so not normanlly good films ) so its nice to see some good films on there and omg its SUCH A GOOD film, it made me feel so sick at the end it really is one of the most shocking films i've ever seen along with "dumplings". forget saw and american gore, if you want to be grossed out stick with j-horror^^

  • I like that actor he's good!!!^_^

  • I was scared to death when I read the wikipedia plot summary! I will never in my life see this movie!

  • its not scary , just really gross at the end. as with many j-horror it has a slow start so it builds up to the gore at the end, but its not a film thats gonna make you think "omg a crazy lady will come and kill me" lol. its just very cringe worthy^^ but you so have to watch it, its a fantastic piece of film making^^

  • yeahh don't worry about it i fell asleep through the beginning, and i woke up right on time where the real action was coming. i was more freaked out with the torture then the gore

  • Mr Swan you are a God amongst J-Horror fans. It would be really cool if you'd review some K-Horror- Oldboy, Sympathy For Mr/Lady Vengeance, Quiet Family, R-Point, Hansel & Gretel, A Tale of Two Sisters, Wishing Stairs etc.

  • Does anyone know what the Japanese word is she keeps repeatig for 'deeper'? Sounds like ticky, ticky, ticky.

I guess when your Japanese girlfriend starts saying ticky ticky ticky when you're in bed together it could get quite confusing...

  • kiri kiri kiri?

  • That actually means cut, heh.

  • Comment removed

  • Uh. I'm fluent in Japanese and kiri can be a form of the word kiru, which means to cut. That doesn't mean it's NOT a pleasant sound to cover up the sound of breaking flesh.

  • Comment removed

  • I was compromising in my comment, you dumbshit. I said even though it means "cut" it could ALSO be a pleasant sound to cover up the sound of breaking flesh. And you should saying "it's in the commentary it's in the commentary it's in the commentary it's in the commentary" because you know what? He's fluent in Japanese too so obviously he knows what kiri means. A great director like him wouldn't pick a word that doesn't mean anything for the girl to say. No fucking duh.

  • Comment removed

  • I just saw this movie today, but strangec1ouds...

    One: Your argument is pathetic.

Two: You're a fucking idiot, and need to improve your reading comprehension skills before you bash on anyone else's English.

The said the DIRECTOR OF THE MOVIE is fluent in Japanese.

You should finish reading a comment entirely before you start slamming your face against the keyboard to reply, douchebag.

  • oh Takashi Mike huh? isn't the crazy director that made a movie of a family f***ing each other? in the end they all got together though. i like his style.

  • Visitor Q

  • I watched it when I was 6 and I LOVE IT! Seriously this is like the best movie ever people! :)

  • the japs are they only one's making real horror films

  • i'm scared of the us ver of the grudge......should i watch this?

  • The grudge is not scary go ahead and watch it.

  • Yeah haha it seems scary but it's not all too bad. good film tho.

  • is that a fucking tails doll in the end?

  • Lol at the end. I 100% agree on this flick. It's creepy, unsettling and well worth watching (hell i own it).

  • Eihi Shiina, who played as Asami Yamazaki, also starred in this rather bizzare J-Horror called Tokyo Gore Police.

That movie made me laugh a lot. I hope you'll review it

  • i just saw that dvd at best buy! i really want to buy it soon, it looks superbly amazing.

  • its damn funny... they are supposedly making fun of suicide in it with fake commericals, genius

  • WOW! #4 in the top 100 most disturbing. sounds like my cup o tea. can't wait to see it

I also saw that the Vanishing (1993) and Henry is also in the top 10. why is Eraserhead in there? i really don't know cuz i havent seen it

anyways great job! keep up the good work!

  • Is this the one were that girl tears that guy up bit by bit?

If so shweeet. Been trying to find the name of that. And yeah i saw on the top 100 scary moments thing.

  • YOU ARE A MAN WITHOUT FEAR ...i envy that

  • is this like hostel? by the pictures with the girl ..

    anyhow nice review

  • eli roth was heavily inspired by this and other miike films. Though, having said that the hostel films are very far and away different than audition. Hostel focuses more on the violence.

  • definitively... i can tell saw 1 was inspired by this film too ... lol

  • are you for real?? have you even seen the audition!? just because their both violent it doesent make it similar!

  • @rodgerswan no no... the diference is hostel is shit and audition is fuckin awsome

  • @mariano26788 Audition fucking sucks, it did not even scare me and it was stupid!! Sorry A Tale of Two Sisters is Great though

  • @rayrayivy It doesn't always have to scare you

  • Truly a masterpiece. I really loved this one.

  • Where did you find this movie on DVD??

and is the audio in japanese? or is there audio in english on the DVD?

  • bought it at best buy. audio is japanese (with english subtitles). no english audio for the film.

  • well thats still pretty sweet... its a good movie

i'll probably try finding it at a Best Buy then... thanks buddy

  • Great review man, i absolutely loved this film!

  • the music he always puts in the background makes it a lil creepy :))

  • One of the best movies i've ever watched so far!

    Nice review. 8D

  • kiri kiri kiri...

  • HAHAHA loved the ending! "Kittie, kittie, kittie, kittie" Ha ha, awesome. But I love Audition, also one of my favorite films of all time. And I totally agree that the beginning is slow for a reason, gives the viewer time to take in alot about the characters and build up for the surprising ending. Awesome movie.

  • OK. I'm going to watch this film now. Hopefully I'll enjoy it.

J-horror is great. The best horror you can possibly get! x

  • this film is amazing, its does a good job just genuinely making you feel uncomfortable. its such a deep exploration into the just what the difference is between fantasy and reality. and its a exploration of sexuality, which is unique to see. the film itself is a build up to the last twenty minutes which is interesting. and it just goes to show how you really don't know another person nor your self.

  • I just saw this movie yesterday (as a birthday present to myself, i rented it out). BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT FILM!! While i will admit that i couldn't sit still during the end, i thought that i was gonna be watching it from behind my chair, but i was actually able to sit through it. It definitely disturbed me, but just not as much as i thought it would.

  • I'm really liking your reviews. Shoot me a PM if you know of a good analysis of this movie- i don't know what to think of it and I'd like to hear what others have to say.

  • This is such a good film!!

i watched beginning was slightly dull but i really did love it when it got to it!

  • You are right about this movie having a number of social commentaries you can pull from it. One that I haven't see written about in any of the other comments is the horrible mental effects caused by child abuse and perversion. I felt that a lot of her anger stemmed from her experiences as a child while in ballet and the abuse she was subjected to. She learned to distrust men and see them as sexual predators, IMO. Excellent movie for sure.

  • I couldnt finish this movie... I was laughing during Saw 3 but thios movie is truly terrifying! Something about that sack suddenly jumping through the air after remaining still for a few scenes scared the shit out of me! and the moving toque on the floor didnt help either

  • lol that was sooooooooooooooooooooo funny at the end !!! lol i cant stop laughing ! i love that movie too i saw the preview and i had to buy it ! i love horror films espiecially Japanese horror films !love you reviews !

  • i love your reviews on these films, you always say the negative and posative aspects of the film , most reviews i see are one sided and biased.good job^^

also have you done a review on the film "Dumplings"?? i really want to know what goes on in that film coz it was banned in singapore or something and i'm a real horror fan but nothing, not even in the trailers, tells you what the film actually includes, just a brief storyline.

Thank you and keep reviewing japanese horror!!^^

  • i was so scared !

    that movie is so cool!

  • I saw the movie i dont think he was swxist i think he just hounistley thats what he wanted in a relationship. As he said before in the movie he wanted a smart girl. Now i think smart to me is somone you can argue with and can dissgusse thing with. I think hew would be sexist if abusive and even if he was sexist she took it to far

  • Alright this movie was great but disturbing at the same time.

  • The most brilliantly constructed horror film...ever made in my opinion. The ending is truly disturbing, with images that will probably never shake loose out of your brain.

  • When I watched this at a halloween party (it was my idea) for the next couple weeks I could freak out one of my friends by repeating the "tic tic tic" line. :3

  • i'm such a wimp when it comes to horror movies but i really want to see this one!

  • I love the movie. I liked the pace of the movie... but i had to watch it thought two day since i almost gave up the first day. i guess i should watch it again to pick up on all those things that amount to the story more. The end was perfect. I like it went though a dream to reality paradox. I had to watch this to see if it may help out a little with what really happened in the gist of it all. I loved all the acting. Glad America hasn't tried to make this movie, would have messed it up .

  • LOL love the ending, it's a very disturbing film. And you never get that tension and release with other thriller films, she takes her time with the torture, not ever in one go. I just finished watching the movie, and even though I didn't like the ending, after you mentioned what it's meanings are about the social commentary, it made me respect the movie a little more.

  • really rodger, i do approve of your reviews, especially this one, and as a Horror/J-Horror movie reviewer myself I have in fact watched a few movies under your recomendation. Keep up that awesome work.

  • Poor Tails!

  • LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT. I could agree with someone who said they didn't like it but the fact that it built so slowly made the ending that much more effective.

  • that's not prejudice at all...

  • Humans are like that, nationality means nothing when it comes to atrocity. And it's not "fucked up", it's just not normal to you. And how do they disrespect animal life?

  • This all has what to do with Audition? It's plain to see the govement has a dark side and the people have different culture and tradition than others but all in all, this aint the place to preach for or against it.

  • the movie is so, so so nonsense. it's a waste of time and money. me and my friends watched it at ma house and screamed only twice, 1 was for a friend who was asleep (imagine if the movie is really creepy, would someone feel asleep?) to wake her up, haha! and the 2nd was for one part, just one part in the movie. after we watched it, our heads ached and we felt really disappointed bec. it took as 2 hours to finish it without learning or feeling creepy at all.

  • LOVE your review! I actually haven't watched "Audition" yet. I've had it on DVD for over a year and I am terrified to watch it. It's still in it's wrapping. lol. Fortunately a group of friends just started a 'horror movie night' and what better time to suggest it. Again, great review, thanks!

  • I heard this movie is a classic

  • This and Ichi the Killer are the most brutal Japanese films I have ever seen. Coincidentally enough, they are both by directed by Miike.

  • love your locations

  • What happens in the last scene?

  • hey rodger swan i really appreciate you posting these videos up i saw all your reviews on the j horror movies i bought audition on dvd because you highly recomended it i thought if that one was good then you must know what your talking about but i dindt understand the ending can you please explain it i would realy appreciate it thanks rodger

  • i didnt think the movie was scary, maybe because i spent more time being confused and wondering what the hell is happening lol the last scene though made me vomit

  • I pretty much agree with everything you said about Audition. And you're right, it doesn't have the most violent, or the most graphic, or the most disturbing scenes in it - it's the way it's PRESENTED that gives those final moments their solid gut-punch. We're allowed to get to know Aoyama and sympathize with his motives, if not his methods and by the end, it's like seeing one of your friends getting hurt.

All I know is I was curled in a fetal position by the end.

  • Do you really want it dubbed it english?

  • It's definitely not the best horror movie ever. But it is a definite change of pace from the same old garbage that seems to pollute the genre nowadays, which by itself makes the movie worth watching.

  • Yeah granted you've got a point, but even though I wasn't omg scared it sorta frightened me in a "wow this might happen in real life" sort of way. Especially since I thought that it was going to be more romantic. Then when that guy was trippin balls and seeing stuff I was like "woah". So I'd say that you have to be ready for the slowness of the film or you won't like it. Hell the torture scene wasn't that extreme at least by now standards but I still felt this has/could happen in some capacity.

  • Wasn't this film used in the My Chemical Romance video for Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough For The Two Of Us?

  • Yes it was! Hey did you know that the lead singer, Gerard Way is deathly afraid of needles? After watching the toucher scenes in this movie, I now know why.

  • have you review "vistor Q"? if not i would like to see your review.
