  • is it only me who finds sarah's outfit sexy?

    ;)

  • tom baker is a legend and that puch whoa

  • What a brilliant trailer. Every Tom clip shows how exciting an actor he was back then.

  • FGS Tom Baker is still the definitive Doctor. Who cares what he did off-screen? I don't. I think all that off-screen nonsense that people go on about spoils the magic. I watch Doctor Who Coming Soon trailers to be immersed, transported to another world for a minute, with enough power to make me want to buy the actual DVD, not read this debate about Tom Baker's attitude off-screen. Please, go to a forum or something and spoil the magic for yourselves and I'll love Tom Baker for being The Doctor.

  • Every actor portrayed the Doctor well, but Tom Baker is the definitive Doctor, I think...

  • Superb story, often overlooked in a season of masterpiece DW stories such as "Pyramids of Mars", "Brain of Morbius", "Seeds of Doom", etc.

Also often overlooked, (simply because she is so darn good as Sarah!) is the fact that Elisabeth Sladen is genuinely sexy-as-hell. Watch her closely in the DVD's of "Planet of Evil" and "Brain of Morbius". Bullet-proof guarantee that male hormones will start a-raging during some of her moves in those form-fitting trousers!

  • @63DW89A Homosexual males notwithstanding!

  • @jtaellio11 Read a "Companion Review" on the Pagefillers DW site in which the gay author admitted that he actually had the personal mind-bending experience of being quite attracted to Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane!

Lis Sladen's pure femininity appears to have overpowered, burned out and restructured the poor fellow's "brain housing group" homo reroute, rewiring it into standard hetero pattern......

You know, that could make an interesting Si-Fi plot....

  • @63DW89A I'm sure it was something as simple as running, screaming, twisting the odd ankle and the odd limp wrist here and there!

  • @jtaellio11 Not to mention big green eyes, cute little upturned nose, a figure that would stop a runaway train dead on the tracks......adorable girl-next-door down-to-earth personality.....gotta stop here...I'm drooling into the keyboard and the laptop is smoking....

Did I mention I kinda like Elisabeth Sladen.....A LOT!!!!!

  • @63DW89A Aaah, I've got my Captain Yates!

  • @63DW89A We already have Adric!

  • @jtaellio11 ADRIC!!! ADRIC!!! NO..say it ain't so..... I'm....I'm....speechless.

Thought it was a dead tie between Adric and Mel being the most detested companions.

  • @63DW89A Well, yes, you're quite right. No, Matthew Waterhouse (Adric actor) 'came out' or something recently. I prefered Louise Jameson, Leela, by far the best.

  • @jtaellio11 My all-time favorite DW companions are the 70's companions, in broadcast order, Liz Shaw, Jo Grant. Sarah Jane, Harry Sullivan, Leela and Romana 1 (don't particularly care for Romana 2, Lalla Ward). Also am a big fan of Ian and Barbara, and Jamie and Zoe; favorite modern companion is shaping up to be Amy Pond.

New Series isn't bad, but has a long way to go to equal the Classic Series at its best in Seasons 7-thru-14. The New Series desperately needs a young "Robert Holmes"!

  • @63DW89A That 's interesting. As stated, I think overall Louise Jameson was very difficult to beat as an actress, her work was accomplished. She seemed to flow, without sounding stilted. Liz was very photogenic, and the journalist storyline and style worked well for her first season with Jon Pertwee, but seemed to slowly go the way of all the female companions: female to circular saw. Louise made a point of never screaming, which helped. No, I wasn't so keen on Lalla either, anaemic looking.

  • @jtaellio11 Louise IS a great actress, agreed. But don't sell Lis Sladen's abilities short. In his "Monster of Peladon" DVD comments Barry Letts said that with the right career moves Lis could have been a big star, as she was a "fantastic actress" with an onscreen charisma like Tom Baker or Jon Pertwee that made you want to watch her.

Agree that Sarah's independence was great in Season 11. The Sladen/Baker chemistry sidelined that independence a bit in favor of "dynamic duo" with Dr#4.

  • @63DW89A Liz did really 'shine' in season 11. The rapport with Jon worked well. I saw MOP recently, and was impressed. Also IOD was great. She was very photogenic, and with Hinchcliffe stories executed cliffhangers very well (notably Robot and Revenge of Cybermen). But by Hand of Fear, the character seemed to have lost that adult, independent quality. Liz had the best stories: Louise had poorer ones in season 15, but my money is still on her. She was classically trained. My opinion!

  • @jtaellio11 In my personal "Top Ten" list of DW stories that I consider the all-time greatest, the companions are Sarah Jane, Harry Sullivan and Leela, and the Dr's are Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. Those 10 stories occurred Seasons 11-thru-14. So Leela IS a part of the best DW has ever put onscreen.

An incredilble sequence of highly-rated DW episodes started with Lis's arrival in Season 11. Minus Lis, the Hinchcliffe era may not have flown so high, so fast. She was an essential part.

  • @63DW89A She was certainly an integral part of the series: the horror of the Hinchcliffe era stories combined with Holme's scripts (which ripped off classics) were superb. It was never really bettered. People associate her with the era. I don't remember Lis doing a great deal post Dr Who, though, compared to Louise. Louise did Tenko, Bergerac, The Omega Factor and Eastenders as well as numerous theatre. Lis did a children's show called 'Stepping Stones' and seemed to disappear from view.

  • @63DW89A Louise did three stories plus one season, and then shot out pretty quickly, so that the character never had a chance to lose impetus!

  • Cont: Masque of Mandragora is the one story that doesn't use Sarah well, although I love the story. Even "Masque.." would lose much without her, and any other story of Sarah's original era falls apart if she is taken out. She is that essential to the stories. Imagine Tom Baker's great moral dilemma in Genesis o/t Daleks without Sarah! Ark in Space minus Sarah! Seeds of Doom minus Sarah tangling with Scorby! Brain of Morbius would not work minus Sarah! Pyramids of Mars without Sarah!

  • @63DW89A You certainly are taken with the actress! It's me, I guess. Janet Fielding was good. Didn't Sarah try to hurt the Doctor in Masque? She was good in Android Invasion, as the doppelganger. Louise in Robots of Death was superb, very forceful, and no running around after the Dr like Victoria etc ad nauseum!

  • @jtaellio11 I'm impressed with the character of Sarah, although I guess that does mean I'm impressed with the actress, as the character would not exist without the actress!

In rewatching the Classic Series over the past 18 months or so, certain things really stand out for me now: That DW really grew up starting with Pat Troughton's final story, The War Games; that the Pertwee-to-early Tom Baker era is DW's finest era(Seasons 7-14); Sarah, by far, was the Dr's most capable assistant, etc.

  • @63DW89A Why shouldn't you like her? Yes, I love the Pertwee stories, in colour. I think Lis said she cried for two months when poor Jon died in 1996!

  • @jtaellio11 Where most actors seem pretty packages wtih nothing inside, Lis does seem full of life and character. She's a joy to listen to on DVD commentaries wtih all her memories of those she worked with. I've heard and read nothing but positive comments from fans who have met her. She appears a very down-to-earth and genuinely sweet lady, so I think I would actually like Lis as a person.

Lis was deeply affected by Jon's passing; the two of them seemed genuinely fond of each other.

  • @63DW89A Yes, she is genuinely a nice person, and this came through with her performance. Her time in the first season (11) was exemplary. I particularly like the first b & w episode of Invasion of the Dinosaurs; Jon and Lis have a dynamic rapport. Her visual style and the journalism background suited the UNIT based stories of the day. Tom was a slightly more aloof, loner type of a Doctor compared to Jon, I think, more dominating.

  • Your comments about Lis are very interesting. She was very good in Planet of the Spiders, I think this showed her at her best, very pretty.

  • @jtaellio11 In my review of Classic DW stories, Sarah really stands out. She's the first companion since Ian & Barbara to actually influence stories. She's not a "tag-along" companion; instead, her actions either move the stories or are key parts in TW, IOD, DtD, MOP, POS, Robot, AIS,SE, GOTD, ROC, TOTZ, POE, POM,AI,BOM,SOD,HOF. Her story influence is realistic & believable, not cartoonish. Superb writing & acting in this era & the Sarah of this era truly is DW's most capable companion.

  • @63DW89A As you said, she was definitely more 'feminist' and a vast departure from the stereotyped screamer of the 1960's. She could execute believable horror in the set cliffhangers, which were a vital part of the show's melodramatic content. This was her forte. Often scriptwriters underused companions, starting off as strong characters but inevitably ending up as secondary, due to the nature of the role. She coped well with this limitation, and audience identified with the earth character.

  • @jtaellio11 Sarah started off as "feminist", but that was softened more to Sarah just standing up for herself in later stories, which is more realistic. Sarah was actually very feminine, and would scream at times, but that didn't keep her from being gutsy, smart and extremely capable. Again a very realistic portrayal of a normal mid-20's woman, showing that being feminine doesn't mean helpless and weak. Sarah gets herself into trouble in IOD, but she also intelligently rescues herself.

  • @jtaellio11 Without a doubt the most successful actress to be a DW companion is Louise Jameson. Her acting resume speaks for itself. I hope you've checked out Louise's impressive web-site!

I thought Leela was superbly written in Season 14. It is disappointing how poorly Leela was written in Season 15. Leela, as always superbly portrayed by Louise, was intelligent and would have grown in knowledge throughout Season 15. Unfortunately, the writers weren't bright enough to see that!

  • Cont: The two DW companions that could not have succeeded without the actresses that portrayed them are Leela and Sarah Jane. I doubt Leela could have become the great companion she is had anyone other than Louise Jameson portrayed her. Likewise, in the hands of an actress other than Elisabeth Sladen, I doubt Sarah would have become the great DW companion she is. Both actresses took Leela & Sarah as far as their era was capable. Leela in Season 15, was sadly an era when DW was declining.

  • @63DW89A Yes, in season 15 they messed up the carefully conceived Hinchcliffe character: originally the actress had worn darker make up and dark brown contact lenses to imply a swarthier , aggressive character. By s15 she was a freckled faced English Rose with bright blue eyes! Incongruent. Image of Fendahl was good. Louise was brilliant, coping with a moody Tom Baker. She avoided stock screaming, but instead hit male characters (Uvanov in ROD) and there was not a trace of wimpishness.

  • @63DW89A Her falling in love with Captain Andred IOT was pure daft!

  • @jtaellio11 Agreed. IOT was itself a bit daft, & obviously the last minute hasty re-write that it actually was! The "marriage write-out" for Leela in IOT was due to Louise's WISE decision not to return for Season 16. Had Hinchcliffe-Holmes still been at the helm, I think Louise would have happily remained in DW through Season 16 and beyond.

Tom Baker's poor treatment of Louise, Seasons 14-15, made him MUCH smaller in my eyes. He was my 1st Dr, but lost favorite status to tie w/Pertwee.

  • @63DW89A Tom was undoubtedly brilliant, but 'the part went to his head' according to director Paddy Russell. Louise stated that he was very difficult to work with, often unpleasant. Chris Boucher, writer, recalls feeling humiliated and wanting to hit Baker for verbally ripping his script to pieces. Matthew Waterhouse even remembers Baker literally stating, "F*** Off" on the lad's first acting day. Yes, genius comes at a price.....

  • @jtaellio11 I've heard/read all the T. Baker incidents you mentioned. Lis seems to have been able to keep Tom stable during her time with him. I've often suspected that Lis grew tired of the chore of keeping Tom stable, and that is why she chose to leave DW at the time she did. I'm basing that thought on commentaries. In commentaries with Lis around, Tom stays on topic. Without Lis, Tom wanders in bizarre directions. Lis's presence seems to stabilize Tom, for whatever reason!

  • @63DW89A I think he was very eccentric, and often I preferred Jon Pertwee's 'showman' approach, which didn't get too deep. I was quite happy with Jon's performance, and I think Lis played off better with him . Tom was more domineering, and her acting lost its initial confidence and potential. As you said, perhaps she could have been a bigger star with the right dramatic role, but gave it up to look after her daughter. Or straight drama was better for her style that escapist fantasy.

  • @jtaellio11 I'm a big Pertwee fan myself, and do agree that Lis/Jon were a great pair; I think Season 11 is right up there with Season 7 as Jon's best.

I think Lis handled Tom the best of anyone, & in the way they bounced off each other, made a great pairing that many consider the all-time best in DW.

Lis's autobiography is due out about April this year, and may shed much light on her decision to not pursue stardom after DW.

I personally would prefer privacy over stardom any day!

  • @63DW89A That's amazing about the autobiography! Thank you for that, I look forward to it. That's most interesting! I guess her success with the new series has snowballed to this. I guess if she made a set decision to stop acting than that accounts for the downturn after Who. A pity, I think it had prejudiced my ideas on her. She was good in SoD with Tom, yes the series was at the top with its horror style in 13 -14. I liked the 3 companions in 12. Yes, that was the golden era.

  • @63DW89A Yes, the new series was high on special effects, compared to yesteryear, but the story concepts and characterisation hardly touched the quality of say Holme's scripts. The camera seems to move about all the time, as if the shots aren't being set up longer than a few seconds. It's made for children with nil attention span.

  • @jtaellio11 I pretty much agree with your assessment of the New Series' flaws. I hope there's a young writer out there somewhere, with a great imaginaton and a firm grasp of Science, Physics, Literature, etc who will pop up to write for the New Series, the young "Robert Holmes" the New Series so desperately needs. DW is too original and unique to allow it to die from poor writing.

I think the rushed prodution of the New Series is intentional, to hide its many story holes and flaws.

  • @63DW89A Yes, it should be a vehicle for fertile ideas, but instead seems to have relied on visual effects alone to impress. Even some of these designs aren't quite as good as the old on paper, even if they use newer materials.

  • @jtaellio11 Agreed. I think you are right, that relying on CGI visuals leads to cartoonishness in both visuals and scripts, and being so "visuals concerned" really hurts the New Series. In rewatching the Classic Series, I'm amazed at how well old-style SFX still holds up today. I think that a return to old-style SFX at times could actually help the New Series to look better and improve the scripts.

  • @63DW89A Yes, real life model shots look better than computer generated. Monsters should be a small part of the plot : eg. the classic shop scenes of Autons coming to life in 1970's Spearhead from Space, deftly implied an invasion. They were being used for their own sake, however more recently . I'm not sure if filmised video, glossy as it looks is as good as the old 16mm gauge film location stock of old! The original Sontarans and Draconians sculpted by John Friedlander were difficult to beat.

  • ah, good days. Back when doctor who was intelligent...

  • sweeet preview

  • I love Sarah's outfit in this story!

  • 0:15 kickass.

  • I've just had a thought.

According to the episode, Zeta Minor is the last known planet in the universe. So could it be Utopia and the rocket that goes there gets killed by the antimatter monsters?

  • last as in farthest from the center, and if you watched the series 3 finale you would know the Utopia people survive. ;)

  • And could it be that What ever is returning through the darkness is coming from the planet of evil?

  • This trailer makes an average story look incredible

  • The Doctor punches someone!

    That was great!!

  • ditto (:

  • This trailer sure gives a sense of atmosphere!

  • Looks Good!

  • Great!

  • This is amazing!! Wow its way better than the professional one.

Could you make one for the Deadly Assassin?

  • tis the proffessional one...

I know because the destiny of the Daleks trailer is on this DVD and it's done in teh same way, plus that's also posted by the same person.

androzanimajor reply to this comment 2 say wether i'm right or not

  • The Deadly Assassain is coming out on DVD later this year.

  • RTD wasn't able to stop it, huh? Well, maybe he finagled a deal to make it too expensive for libraries and video rental places to pick up. His own tv shows are easy enough to buy, although they're always sitting their on the shelf unrented.

  • very very very good, plus kl music!

  • This one always reminded me of 'The Forbidden Planet'

  • nice punch by tom baker lol

  • i ordered it on video just today !!!

  • Flawless

  • i so want this for christmas!

and did i just see the doctor punch someone!

    "Doctor!"

"yes, i know, i'll take care!"

his psychic abilities are improving :)

  • yes he did and for good reason!

  • @sarahjane4eva Yeah...The Doctor's punched ALOT of people.

  • This Is Amazing..Tom Baker is Powerful,I've fotgotten how great this story is. Amazing trailer

    THERE IS!!!!!

  • Looks like a "Next Time" trailer like the new series. Just add the new theme, maybe?

  • Why did they advertise it to make it look like it's edited and directed like a music video, the way shows are edited today? Do they think something else wouldn't sell? Are there no more artists in the world? Is it now all just sales people?

  • It's doing the same job all trailers do, which is to use a greatest-hits style montage to persuade you to purchase the whole thing. You know films aren't going to be strobe-edited explosions like their trailers, why do you think this will be?

  • Not all trailers, just the ones that miscalculate. Movies that are advertised to be something other than they are tend to tank at the box office. Ang Lee's "Hulk" was advertised with electric guitar music, as if it was a rocknroll, world wrasslin federation romp for tards. The tards went and were disappointed because they were expecting 2-D action stuff. This is drwho when it was for smart kids. It's being advertise as if it's the drwho of today, pop culture candy coated crap.

  • when i saw this on my key of time box set i was gobsmacked, hopefully more trailers like this!

  • Looks decent.
