Difficile dire quale delle due squadre fosse la più forte: l'Italia non aveva brillato fino a quel momento ed era inferiore a quella di USA 94 pur dimostrando una maggior costanza nel rendimento ed una maggiore affidalità, con una minore imprevedibiltà. La Francia aveva problemi nei reparti offensivi e ancora larghi margini di miglioramento rispetto ad Euro 2000. Tuttavia erano due squadre che si comportarono molto bene.

France a had a great team this year, but just like 94 the eventual champs had a hard time beating the Azzurri in regulation. I hate losing on penalties. I also think Italy had a couple of players that should have been there instead of the likes of DiLivio & Moreiro. Finally Roberto Baggio should have been in the starting XI.

2006 - Italy defeats France 5-3 via penalties due to an unbreakable 1-1 tie that Zidane and Matarazzi scored for their respective teams. Funny how both goalscorers where the ones involved in that dramatic headbutt.
