Sending a check to every American -- cash money -- was tried by the Bush administration. They declared it a "failure" because you know what those damn consumers did with the money?

They paid down debt rather than buying stuff from Asia like they were supposed to!

But despite this, some people thought this should be a permanent program replacing the welfare state with an $800/month check to every household. The DOLTS! Don't they realize this might have stopped the economic crisis!?

Why is it "devestating" when people foreclose on their homes? You mean they become renters like me? Where was your sympathy when so many of us couldn't afford houses and had to rent? What a bunch of psuedo-sympathetic hogwash. This woman should have been a nurse in a geriatrics ward.

Instead of bailing out corporations, why didn't you just bloody fortify the deficient mortgages? Yes - pay the people directly. It's not outlandish - you put a gun to our heads to take it in the first place. In the meantime, I'm glad. Now I can buy a house at a sane price. Just don't take my tax money to prop up values.

Every flaw she points out in the program is due to the obstructionism of the banks. Treasury caved because they buy the banks' argument that if the program helps homeowners too much it will hurt them, and since they're basically insolvent and on life support anyway, destroy them and the credit system along with them. It's blackmail. Could we all just get over our ideological prejudices and do the right thing, the only rational thing, and nationalize the banks?

She is smart and well spoken. I am dubious of government solutions to free market issues. Their solutions are part of why things are so messed up now. What makes us think that team Obama is any better or smarter than any of those before? I hope they come up with a solution that does no harm. America wins if they do. If this solution runs up the debt or expands government, I am against it.

bertly71 - excellent comment and certainly much more "substantial" then my earlier comment - lol! But you certainly nailed that one on the head - gov interference and expansion only adds to the problems.And the sentence "what makes us think that the Obama team is any better or smarter than any of those before" says it all, especially in light of the fact that we now see all the same old tired players and corporate insiders.Obama is no departure - merely an extension.

It seems so wrong. And JPMChase has collection agencies calling us while they have had our HAMP paperwork for 2 months.
