"Oi, omae! Ore no na wo ittemiro!" Awesome. I think that his bad-ass introduction and catchphrase is why Jagi is so popular with the fandom despite his rather one-sided fight against Kenshiro.
Incidentally, I think the main reason Jagi couldn't touch Ken in their fight is because he (foolishly) revealed his manipulation of Shin. As Ken explained while fighting Shin, the power of his rage makes him invincible (thus he shrugs off that huge-ass pillar Jagi hits him with).
jagi is one of my all time favorite characters. he's by far one of the best villains of hnk and also quiet under-rated. i feel he had a lot more potential to develop further in the series.
It's a shame Jagi never got a gaiden movie of his own, it would be cool to see a film just of him fucking people up and being his own special brand of asshole. In the original series, Jagi only even makes one guy's head explode.
Also, it's kind of funny that those hapless villagers didn't notice the Hokuto connection until they saw the seven scars. Did they not see the part where Jagi paralyzed that giant mook with a single blow?
@dark7element yeh, jagis's pretty under-rated. he had a lot of potential to develop further. they cud of kept him as like one of the main villains and developed him more through the series and then wen time came, they cud of maybe got ken to kill him in like an epic battle or something, in which jagi actually gives ken a hard time.
when he shows up with all the flame on the blackground it reminds me of Ikki from the knigts of zodiac. If had a motorcycle I'd like to have such helmet for sure XD
@sec0ndevolution Rei got his sister back, though. Jagi`s plans fucked up Rei, Ken and Toki to an extent. He is the reason Ken lost the love and friendship of his life.
@evexxxxx according to google translator this sentence is Ore no na o itte miro! which means "try to say my name!" so the subtitles seem to be wrong, btw he does say a few words before the Ore no na o itte miro! what are those?
@Karmoon7 Great reply man! That was very appreciated :D
Here comes another question for all, why does Jagi have those scars? Are those fake just to pretend he was Kenshiro? I don't remember any episode of him getting such wounds
It's not really accurate to say that Jagi was a "weak" fighter. He could perform a lot of Kenshiro-like moves, including making a guy's head explode with a single punch, as well as the paralysis strike he uses here. Any of the minor villains that Kenshiro kills with minimal effort (Sgt. Madd, the Four Jacks, etc.) Jagi would kill just as easily. Jagi is a lot less powerful than Kenshiro, but so is everyone else in the series with two or three exceptions.
It's times like this when i wih that there was an alternate series to this show like if jagi actually beat ken or something then proceeds to win at everything.
@VampiricBushkid: If it was up to me, Jagi would have appeared much later in the series and would have been much more of a physical and intellectual threat to Kenshiro. Yeah, I know and realize that he's an a-hole and got exactly what he deserved at the hands of Kenshiro, but I still have sympathy for him and would have loved to have seen him fight Kenshiro on the same level as him, Toki, and Raoh, not to mention the six main Nanto warriors.
Man Jagi's parents were killed in a fire, Girlfriend was raped and killed, younger brother messed up his face, made a fool of the whole time he was trying to be the succesor to Hokuto Shin Ken and still nothing went the way he wanted..... If only he would've left the temple and just stayed with the biker gang he might still be alive and had a better life.
You should read the Jagi Gaiden manga, it explains why Jagi acted the way he did and it is pretty sad. After you read it I assure you 100% you will have sympathy for Jagi.
@FuckingEnforcer Denied. Jagi was still a hot-headed buffoon that had no discipline whatsoever. What kind of idiot spends a year dying to learn Hokuto Shinken, then when he's finally accepted, decides that learning the art properly isn't worth his time? If he had any discipline, he still would've been the worst out of the four brothers, but he would've had a girl, a fully intact head, and sanity. He could've exceeded Shin/Rei levels of strength.
What the fuck. He just wanted to make his father proud but got enraged that Roah, Kenshiro and Toki were naturally better than him. You're right he had no discipline but at the end of the day not only did he felt he lost his father but the only person he considered a friend got omega raped. So his mind went mentally unstable and he pretended to be Kenshiro because he knew Ken was better than him. Yeah his a idiot and hot-headed but I personally have a lot of sympathy for him.
@FuckingEnforcer He didn't really want his father to be proud of him, he wanted to be recognized & loved by him. When Ryuken brought in potential successors, he got jealous that they would be getting more attention than him, but he never stopped to realize that his being sheltered as Ryuken's "son" rather than his "disciple" put him in a better position.
I can feel pity for Jagi, but not a lot of sympathy.
You're completely right but at the end of the day I still feel sympathy for Jagi because of all his misfortune, Jagi did have potential to be a great fighter (you see it when he breaks the tree) but his mental state just went berserk after all these events. I just wonder if Kenshiro fully understood what Jagi was going through he would of spared him and maybe asked Jagi to join him.
@MisterWhat Hey, don't be down on Mr. Heart. He's probably the toughest enemy Ken fights who isn't a martial artist of some sort. In fact, Mr. Heart was the first villain of the series who managed to so much as knock Ken down; Spade, Diamond and Club were killed effortlessly. Yes, Jagi would have killed Heart, but on the other hand, I think Heart would have killed any other minor villain (Zeed, Mad Sarge, etc)
This has got to be the best scene in human history. Post-apocalyptic landscape, a Harley-Davidson, an 80s rock jacket and a sawnoff shotgun. And now only imagine Clint Eastwod doing the voice for Jagi. No man could bear suck awesomeness...
Raoh was the one that Ryuken chose for the evil role to balance the successor it even says in Ryuken Gaiden attached @ the end of Jagi Gaiden, Jagi kept running away & doing his own thing he was too unpredictable for Ryuken to make any plans for him. Ryuken didn't want Jagi to learn Hokuto at all remember & although he had a promising start was ultimately a slacker & that lead to his downfall coupled with the feelings that he should of automatically got the successorship for being the first son.
Jagi let his pride get the best of him. he knew that ryuken never ment for him to be the successor and yet greed for the power of hokuto led him to become a murderer.
The Manga itself contradicts in some points. I dont view the Gaiden making Jagi sympatetic at least. It only dwells deeper on a backstory that was the least used in the original work.
At the very least it cemented his respect for Toki, and a desire to please his foster father that never came to be. Having him actually beating more guys only makes it better.
The manga never implied or hinted that Jagi was anything more than a vicious thug with a blind hatred for his younger brother. In that respect, the spinoff DOES heavily contradict the manga.
Fans love to hate Jagi because he's unforgivably evil. Therefore there was no need for an apologetic backstory.
Are you talking about what here? Characterization or fighting potential?
The Gaiden does not make Jagi sympatetic at all. All it does is flesh out a misterious background. If Jagi was all bad ad no skill, then Ryuken keeping him all those years reeks of stupidity. He didn`t learned because he didn`t knew how to, he didn`t learned because he never gave a shit.
Jagi being protective of his adoptive father, his burning will to succeed over his older brothers and finally his funky biker chick girlfriend who he cares about. The gaiden attempts to show that Jagi was a misguided student who went off the rails.
As for your last point, there was already an official booklet that disclosed how Ryuuken kept Jagi at the dojo as a patsy for his other students. He needed a violent and devious opponent to further the training of his future successor.
1- There is nothing in the original work, that shows Jagi not having respect for his older brothers and foster father. The main point of the Gaiden, in respect of the new material about an obscure background, is to cement what we always knew, that Jagi never had a hold on his emotions.
2- And yet in the Manga, Ken tells Rei how fighting Jagi could end up with his death, because it was a" batle between Hokuto "masters": Jagi also learned the basic Nanto from watching Shin, and teached basic Hokuto to Amyba. Whatever the purpose of Ryuken, Jagi had obviously enough potential there.
Kenshiro was rarely one to underestimate his opponents, but come the end of the fight he realizes Jagi's limitations and says "Have you forgotten the essence of Hokuto Shinken?" before killing him.
The Shin theory is debatable, since the Toki Gaiden manga points towards him trading skills with Amiba (who studied Nanto Seiken).
Yes, Jagi obviously had some talent, but he never nurtured it and resorted to underhanded tactics in order to win - betraying the law of his martial art.
In that regard, the retcon is to simply give Jagi that nod of potential, something i hardly mind, since i never liked that contradiction about his skill. We already had a fifth student getting booted because he outright sucked.
Again, I already pointed out what Ryuuken's motivation was for keeping Jagi - he wanted someone evil and devious in order to perfect the ideal successor. Jagi had some talent but never enough to be considered successor, therefore Ryuuken found another purpose for him.
But i didn`t said he had the makings of a sucessor. Even Raoh didn`t. All i said is that the guy had potential and skills that he never cared to capitalize, but were there. he does not "suck" in comparasion with the others because he is seriously inept, but because he never gave a shit.
Jagi is incredible. Too bad Fist of the North Star is only translated by a group who can barely understand Japanese or type English with correct grammar...
It literally loses half of what they're saying in important scenes. Even this clip is riddled with translation errors.
Um, sadly we're screwed on the Hokuto front. It's either dodgy Hong Kong subs by folks who ran it through Babel Fish, or the "Heart of Madness" ones (these) which miss out about 30-50% of the details and context when they DO get it right...
Episodes 13 to 51 are subbed by AnimeSkyScraper (and this clip came from episode 30). They use the yellow font for the subs. HoM did episodes 1-12 and 52 to 152 and use normal font color for the subs.
Its hinted that he did, altho you get to see that in his Gaiden. He fights a student of a rival Nanto school, and busts up gangs, while mocking them for being slow.
@ElectricHawk I think Jagi was an underrated villain. He was pretty cool, like Raditz from DBZ. Although they maybe weak, but they were still awesome.
@ShinsengumiYoji In the manga it seems that Jagi with the helmet could beat the "old Kenshiro" that Shin beated. Jagi without the helmet was really weak since he failed to see that Noobshiro hit all pressure points with needles in the eyes. The problem for Jagi is that Kenshiro is stronger too, so Jagi never fill the gap between him and his younger brother. Since Hokuto characters grow (except poor Toki), Jagi could become stronger while Nanto guys couldn't.
@foedusitalicum Well, considering how Jagi didn't figure out the reason he lost balance was due to Kenshiro striking his powerpoint, I say Jagi didn't improve that much. I also doubt that Jagi is a genuine Hokuto guy because of his lack of training.
@foedusitalicum In the manga, Jagi knows about pressure points. The thing is, he is supposed to be someone who doesnt care about the technical finer points of MA which in that kind of culture is a negative trait, he was supposed to be about winning for whatever means. Kenshiro was daniel san and Jagi was one of the Cobra Kai dojo guys.
He did had potential. Learning the basic Nanto by himself, fucking up everyones life and surviving the fallout of the bombs is and will always be badass.
Hahaha Jagi is really an example for a "cowardly bad guy"character. But his helmet is kinda look cool to me.
This scene is really reminds me of a manga and anime called Black cat. Where there's also an imposter using the main characters title to hide his true identity.
I forgot how menacing and awesome Jagi was when he first appeared. I mostly recall his final exit from the series, which really emphasised him as a bit of a nothing.
Things got bloody surreal at the end of that clip, when the random images of Ken started appearing while Jagi started going on about his name.
Seconded. I wish that Jagi could have gotten up to Kenshiro's fighting level when they fought and ended in a draw, only for a more brutal fight to happen later.
It's a shame that Jagi didn't turn out to be as ruthless against Kenshiro as he was against the random thug awaiting certain death.
What most people also fail to understand about Jagi is that he also started the cycle of "Hokuto no Ken" off, too. By manipulating Shin, and so forth. He even affected the life of Rei, to an extent.
Truly a wicked man. So, inevitably, was rewarded with a befitting death. But still, what a superb piece of character writing. His obsession with younger brothers being inferior to their elder brothers is also quite bizarre.

Before his classic line, Jagi says, 'Oi, omae.' おい、お前
It literally means 'Hey. You.' but it's incredibly rude. Something like this is a localisation that gives a more accurate feeling in English:
"You. Say my name, you worthless fuck."
And yes, the subs on this vid are really bad.
Where the subs say 'Anda' the character is actually saying 'FOLLOW THEM!/DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY!'

But i didn`t said he had the makings of a sucessor. Even Raoh didn`t. All i said is that the guy had potential and skills that he never cared to capitalize, but were there. he does not "suck" in comparasion with the others because he is seriously inept, but because he never gave a shit.

Born evil and is the only a the die time who rest evil!
ChriSavage 2 years ago 2
Jagi is incredible. Too bad Fist of the North Star is only translated by a group who can barely understand Japanese or type English with correct grammar...
It literally loses half of what they're saying in important scenes. Even this clip is riddled with translation errors.
OtaKing77077 2 years ago
For an as correct interpretation as possible, what would you recommend for localized version of the Hokuto No Ken?
Because I haven't seen it yet, but I'd like to.
HarpoTheVillain 2 years ago
Um, sadly we're screwed on the Hokuto front. It's either dodgy Hong Kong subs by folks who ran it through Babel Fish, or the "Heart of Madness" ones (these) which miss out about 30-50% of the details and context when they DO get it right...
OtaKing77077 2 years ago
What about manga? Fansubs?
HarpoTheVillain 2 years ago
You're more than happy to sub them yourself, if you're such an expert. :)
HoM's subs aren't perfect, but I'm thankful to them for making this series accessible to English fans.
sec0ndevolution 2 years ago
Episodes 13 to 51 are subbed by AnimeSkyScraper (and this clip came from episode 30). They use the yellow font for the subs. HoM did episodes 1-12 and 52 to 152 and use normal font color for the subs.

In the original manga, Jagi broke the necks of those two guys after he Shotgun whips that guy.
Much more badass.

Jagi was such a wasted character. Would of been nice to see him fight some strong opponents before his confrontation with ken.
kimiisfastest 2 years ago 7
Its hinted that he did, altho you get to see that in his Gaiden. He fights a student of a rival Nanto school, and busts up gangs, while mocking them for being slow.

True. He is quite weak compared to Ken and Raoh. But he had his moments.

As awful as Jagi was, he has one of the coolest intros and quotes in the series. In any series in fact.
ElectricHawk 3 years ago 50
@ElectricHawk I think Jagi was an underrated villain. He was pretty cool, like Raditz from DBZ. Although they maybe weak, but they were still awesome.
ShinsengumiYoji 10 months ago
@ShinsengumiYoji In the manga it seems that Jagi with the helmet could beat the "old Kenshiro" that Shin beated. Jagi without the helmet was really weak since he failed to see that Noobshiro hit all pressure points with needles in the eyes. The problem for Jagi is that Kenshiro is stronger too, so Jagi never fill the gap between him and his younger brother. Since Hokuto characters grow (except poor Toki), Jagi could become stronger while Nanto guys couldn't.
foedusitalicum 9 months ago
@foedusitalicum Well, considering how Jagi didn't figure out the reason he lost balance was due to Kenshiro striking his powerpoint, I say Jagi didn't improve that much. I also doubt that Jagi is a genuine Hokuto guy because of his lack of training.
cartoonjerk 7 months ago

Jagi's helmet keeps his skull from exploding from an attack Ken used on him before the series.

I bet the scars on Jagi's chest were "self inflicted" all for the purpose of framing Kenshiro; making everyone believe that he had become a villain.

actually thats how he got the scar on his chest
tezkatepuka 3 years ago
I forgot how menacing and awesome Jagi was when he first appeared. I mostly recall his final exit from the series, which really emphasised him as a bit of a nothing.
Things got bloody surreal at the end of that clip, when the random images of Ken started appearing while Jagi started going on about his name.
LordZast 3 years ago
I think it was because Jagi wanted Ken tortured, or something to that extent anyway.

Jagi is a brilliant character. He was always one of my favourites in "Hokuto no Ken" from the evil point of view. He's really screwed up.
DivineOrochi 5 years ago 6
Seconded. I wish that Jagi could have gotten up to Kenshiro's fighting level when they fought and ended in a draw, only for a more brutal fight to happen later.
It's a shame that Jagi didn't turn out to be as ruthless against Kenshiro as he was against the random thug awaiting certain death.
Loader2K1 5 years ago 6
What most people also fail to understand about Jagi is that he also started the cycle of "Hokuto no Ken" off, too. By manipulating Shin, and so forth. He even affected the life of Rei, to an extent.
Truly a wicked man. So, inevitably, was rewarded with a befitting death. But still, what a superb piece of character writing. His obsession with younger brothers being inferior to their elder brothers is also quite bizarre.
DivineOrochi 5 years ago 5
I assume Jagi suffered from some kind of inferiority complex.
Loader2K1 5 years ago
Hey have you seen the episode when Kenshiro and Rei fought,(if they even fought)and who won;I seen the fight with Kenshiro and Shuu already.
