this makes me so sad i drive past wadena every time i go to see my sister in perham the first time we went to perham it was a few months after the tornados i saw the school and the damage it was silent in our car untill we were out of wadena
That summer was filled with tornados. I remember one week each day there was a tornado warning. It's crazy to think that most people didn't even know it was coming.
@elmolovesyou4245 I know I had a couple warnings in my town that I wasn't expecting..That goes to show how fast severe weather can pop up, especially if everything comes together at once.
I am from Wadena and there were no deaths there due to these tornados. I consider it a miracle. It took place at the right time for this to have been the case. If this would have happened when folks were normally sleeping it would have been a total different story. A very sad one indeed!
@FreyReh Yeah, especially on June 17th, that was incredible. The scary thing is that I heard the SPC was surprised even more didn't develop. I think we dodged a BIG bullet that night even though we had I think 35 confirmed tornadoes in the state
The sad part of this whole thing (if the EF4 wasnt sad enough) is that I was watching "storm chasers the other night and THEY are the first ones to call it in (MINUTES before it hit the town). I know this tornado was rain wrapped and hard to see but thats no excuse, the radar CLEARLY showed the storm moving their way and that it had alot of rotation. I think I read or hard 3 people died in Wadena and several injuried and I feel that wouldn't have been the case if they were properly warned
@arohn2007 Yeah that is the sad thing of this whole thing...No one called it in till the storm chasers got to town before it hit and they called them to sound the sirens...Total "BS" .
@arohn2007 What's really ridiculous is the fact that the Storm Prediction Center had predicted a severe outbreak for ND/MN for this time frame almost a week in advance. No one believed them.
There was 60+ tornadoes in just our NWS warning area that day.
@g0d13ss Actually I had this day foretasted a MONTH in advance. Yes a MONTH in advance. How did I have the day so far out? Simple, I had a huge job interview to go to that was schedule for this day but I got the call for the interview at the end of May. I wrote it down on my white board "Interview / Tornado Day" I ended up chasing that day after the interview in a suit. If anyone is wondering, suppose to be at a wedding 5/21/2011 this year so big weather day in MN on 5/21/2011
@bnvn1 Actually that sounds about right. I went to see my family last May and had tornadoes following me home. So a repeat this year doesn't sound far off. I'll hold ya to that ;)
@g0d13ss Well, if the NWS predicts severe weather that far out then its for sure something to keep your eye on. However, with a week out things could've changed but, when they issue a moderate risk area they are pretty certain that things are gonna get ugly. Also with a moderate risk you almost certai nly will see tornadic activity and that unfortanely also means a good threat of strong to vioent tornadoes.
@g0d13ss Also, if your under a moderate risk and it just happens to be sunny that day..DO NOT let your guard down just because its sunny. I know better because I'm a trained storm spotter but I think most people think since its sunny that nothing will happen. WRONG! It make take until afternoon in some cases but you WILL see severe weather
@arohn2007 Yep. I agree. I've taken weather spotter classes every year since I was 16.
If I know there is bad weather predicted, I'm on the SPC page, and the NWS page. But yes, I rarely see thunderstorms in the morning hours. The best ones are in the afternoon with the heating of the day. :)
@g0d13ss same with me. :) If I know there's a risk for severe out, I've got my NOAA weather radio on ( table top and handheld) And yeah I agree..Once that heating gets tapped into, your in th risk area and a couple other ingredients that us spotters only know about (or care) come together, all bets are off. What most people don't understand is that if there are storms in the morning then the sun comes out and it becomes nice, it does NOT mean that its gonna stay that way.
@arohn2007 I remember one time a couple years ago we started out with thunderstorms that lasted all night long and then by afternoon it had heated up enough that we ended up under a tornado warning. Best rotation I had seen from any storm near here. Didn't produce, but the sky was just beautiful.
@g0d13ss I wish I could've seen that! :) I know its weird to say but, I'm looking forward to severe weather season to begin! :) I REALLY hope we don't end up with a tornado outbreak like we had on June 17th of last year
@g0d13ss Like I said though, I just hope we don't have a tornado outbreak like we did on june 17th of last year. The NWS was shocked that MORE didn't develop! That could've been REALLY bad! We had a wedge tornado moving towards us (I live in Duluth) but luckily it dissapaited before it got here. I think it was over by bemidji at the time.
This past year was insane, sirens went off about 5x where i'm at near Dilworth, MN.... for those that think MN is known for only snow, we also get tornadoes, this particular tornado in Wadena was about an hour and half drive from where i'm at. I even remember years back when i was 5 being dragged down in the basement cause of tornadoes being near my house.
hloy crap i was in Theft River MN when this was happning i was looking out my belcony and i was like hlly shit theres like funnle clouds forming but it did turn in to a full tornado. i was scared as hell!
