I had the distinct pleasure of seeing The Rite performed by Kwadrofonik (2 pianos, 2 percussionists) in Krakow last December. Fantastic! Check out their vids on YouTube.
Its just not edgy enough in the winds. sounds too. . .I want to say legato for the lack of a better word. haha the SFO and MTT have ruined this piece for me. nobody plays it better.
Yes: Tillson Thomas and SFO It's posted on Youtube. I've seen this rewriting on TV and in the concert halls ever more increasingly. Watch it the start of the "Rival Games Of The Cities" at 2:55 and compare to the other video. You'll see all the notes covered by 1 timpanist in the Thomas, and split between 2 timpanists (as written) in the other (Second Video clip)
@lednew2010 What do you mean? I have seen dozens of performances of The Rite over the past 40 years, and am intimately acquainted with the written score, including, of course, the timp parts. I have never seen a ' simplified' version of them. Is there any performance on youtube you could refer me to?
@theclandestinum What a nonsense !!!??? Jaws is based on an ostinato of two notes on which are adding several themes. On this work Williams takes as well his inspiration from Debussy, Stravinsky, Bach and others. But I don't see any similiraties between those two works. Jaws is a masterwork, just listen to the concert version of the shark cage fugue, this is a great demonstration of symphonic music.
@theclandestinum how needs a coductor in our days? the players can practice with a CD at home. conductors are neede only for new music like in Yossi Hamami concerto for piccolo 'Freakollo'.
@stamstuff Yes, practice can make a part from start to finish seem almost second nature, but the conductor is still an essential component once the performance comes. I would liken the conductor to a sports coach; sure, at the highest levels, the players would still be able to find some success without a coach, but when unexpected things happen (as a performer, I can confidently say they almost always do), the coach is the perfect person to keep everyone performing well.
@jipke Herbert Von Karajan was one of the best conductors of the XX Century and he still couldn´t get the need for savageness, energy and wildness that this piece needs.
Why in the beginning of the ritual action of the ancestors in almost every version the horns play staccatisimo? in the score it is written a very long note without any staccato.
@xmiszxiszx Try Bartok's "Miraculous Mandarin". Salonen/LA Phil is the best version. If you're really abstract, try Berio's Sequenzas (especially No. 5) :D
But what a useless, soft, flabby bass drum ! The thwack at 32. 16( and following) should cut through like a canon, as strong as, and often stronger than the timpani- but this guy sounds like he's tapping the top of a cardboard box with a piece of rubber hose
@kevycanavan No, the other piece was 'Songs and Dances of Death' by Mussorgsky. It was a concert in the series of Zondagochtenconcerten ('Sunday morning concerts'), which are broadcast live on radio and internet, so there is no time to change/clear the stage (no break either).

starting at 9:00 is incredibly contemporary. I can trace back so much electronic music right to that passage.

Conductor´s great final move (from 33:37 - 33:42).

Refreshing to see the dual timpani parts played as originally written and not as so often "simplified" today. Good job all around.
