The graphics are VERY impressive and the controls responsive, and there's definitely some meaty backstory, considering the platform.
The one thing about this game that REALLY gets on my nerves is the repetition involved in unlocking the NUMEROUS doors - and if you forget the code, you might have a long walk ahead trying to find the combo again. I'd rather just have to enter a particular level code ONCE, and let the game handle it from that point on.
i finish this today and i had an awnsome time but i had to draw each room so i wouldnt get lost in the middle of this maze duck idol does plus 3 others useless itens are needed to see an extended ending wonder what would it be this game has a lote of rooms xD
i drew a map too.... screw AP statistics, desolate is more important.
the problem was that it isnt like a big rectangle, the paths through to each rooms are different and my map ended up awkward looking. i actually managed to beat this yeseterday
Is assembly really that space efficient... im making an RPG on my calculator which is already 40000+ bytes (split into 5 programs). When you need to change areas, it breaks the program and you have to archive-unarchive manually... oh and my game has NO GRAPHICS (besides a map). and graphics take up A LOT of space from what i have experienced. So.... how do you do something like this within such small constrains? must i learn assembly? -_-
Assembly is quite complicated, but it compiles into hexadecimal machine code.
Maps are everything in assembly programs can be compressed and decompressed due to the speed of assembly.
For larger games like RPGs, it is a good idea to try and learn assembly, but that tedious language is not for everyone.
You can downsize assembly programs by using existing libraries (like those in Ion and Mirage OS) for things like random numbers and displaying sprites, instead of writing your own routines.
actually I heard some ASM programmers saying that making RPGs, specifically traditional RPGs with full of data, it can be a total hassle, simply because of all the text, data and variables to handle, not to mention the file size (if you don't want a <5 hours long RPG) and I think one even recommended that the game is done in BASIC and only use ASM for the stuff involving graphics and maybe compression/decompression (to save space on map data, for example). Prbly why there are so few ASM RPGs
no they can't, unless you have a Silver Edition model with OS under 1.15, which has a glitch that lets you group archived programs (causes the calc to lock up and not even a OS reinstall nor a memory reset will fix it). Or if you get a blue screen and the LCD starts leaking, remove a battery within at least the first minite this happen, to not have the LCD be damaged (usually contrast becomes lower in certain areas)
In #omnimaga channel on IRC tr1p1ea announced he might start working on a 8 level grayscale version of this game. He even posted a screenshot in action
yeah tr1p1ea told us that the original was big because of crappy coding, which was due to Desolate being his very first ASM game ever. If he rewrote it it would be signifiantly smaller, even with 8 level grayscale tiles
yeah I saw him join MaxCoderz forums in September 2003 then he became staff and I joined not long afterward and followed the entire progress since then. he had no previous games released, all he did were some small TI-BASIC programs. He had a very hard time with the 83+ version because he was running out of space, which is why it was released several months afterward, but he finally succeed by splitting the game in two programs.
cant crash my calc, can it?

Evidently my memory sucks; I didn't even watch the video and haven played the game in a few months.
It's still annoying to have to look at an item to recall the lock code.
Also (and this is just me being really picky), there are numerous minor grammatical errors. Perhaps a new version will fix them? :)

First, try changing the interupt frequency (it asks when you run the program).
Also, try ALCDFIX (Look in my videos, I have a video for that program)
