She must have had the capability to do this vault - I doubt even north korea would send a gymnast to do a vault she couldn't even pull around in practice, so pretty amazing all the same, I think
this is INcredible to see this vault happen this long ago! damn, yelena produnova was the only woman i knew to do this vault, and that wasn't until...the late 90's??
This isn't the first time I've seen this but I can't believe she threw this back in 1980. She wins the award for the highest ratio of difficulty to difficulty actually required by the code at the time.
I think she was going for a handspring front tuck and rotated too much..It would be insane someone try such a hard vault when a simple tuck tsuk had a big value!
Awesome for Choe to attempt such a move at the 1980 Olympics. Tough stuff. She might have made it on today's spring-loaded vault table. She took off on basically a wood beat board with very little spring as well.
to gymnasticsforever17.....if you were truly a gymnastics fan you would know that its well documented and talked about alot that this girl attempted this in '80. I have known that since Kharkov did it in 88 at the Olympics when the commentator said it. No need to try and argue with history just because you don't know the facts ;)
@TwisterFlipp95 Haha....I understand. It almost seems like camera tricks.....just like when i first saw Elena Mukhinas bar routine from 77-79...i couldnt believe i was really seeing what was happening. But it is certainly fun to see this kind of stuff when it does happen. Little did they know at the time how long it would be before it was attempted again (and even then it was only done by ONE other girl!!!) Amazing stuff! :) ;)
And besides Produnova attempting the vault 19 years later, what's also interesting is that she was very strong and powerful, along with any other male so willing to attempt this vault. Choe, on the other hand, looks as scrawny as someone who hadn't eaten for a week!
this was during team optionals and it's pretty well-known and documented among gym fans, so you needn't be so skeptical...and I agree with produnov's comment that it's really, REALLY nice to finally see this vid (it's extremely rare), so thank you so much badday1993!!!
this video has been available to gymfans(not on youtube obviously) for several years...... gymnasticsforever17, why don't you check the surroundings with other videos from this competition if you don't believe it
Wow she was so close!

Given what the vault was like then, she was quite close. Amazing that she attempted this.

@No1ZmeskalFan actually a male gymnast from cuba attempted this vault at the same olympics - he also crashed, but he was alot more hurt than she was!

this was Not an over-rotated handspring tuck front!
because when you do a handspring front tuck vault you wouldent be in a tucked position for so long!

No this is widely known amongst gym fans; its a genuine attempt at a handspring double. Obviously a failed attempt, but an attempt all the same.
