HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it! I just bought three Van Ert sparrow traps and can't wait to use them on my flying pestilence! I loved watching that ugly thing go into the box then WHAM! trap door flies up and he isn't going anywhere! I don't have a problem touching the birds. Grip the body in one hand, the head in the other hand and RRRIIIPPP! Body goes one way, head goes another. WOO HOO! hahahahahahaha Extinction to all house sparrows and starlings! : )
Glad it worked. But the problem with this trap is you have to touch the bird and it can fly away and become trap shy. You also have to keep an eye in case say, a woodpecker gets trapped. Don't want it to expire in there. How much did it cost?
@biodot88 Hi! yes thats very true about grabbing the bird once it is caught, i just wear thick gloves.. I do keep a close eye on the box and anytime the trap has been set, the bright orange indicators on the trap let me know that it has been set. I immediately check up on the box when this happens. My nest boxes open from the top, so I put a metal mesh with 3/4" specing over the top and look into the box so that I can identify the bird inside. I have never actually caught a non-target.
The trap is called a Van Ert trap, which is simply a small metal spring/flap mechanism that you insert into the box, underneath the entrance hole. Just go online to VanErt traps and they have one size for sparrows and another size for starlings. When the starling goes into the box, it hits a little bar that releases the "flipping" part of the trap, which covers the hole so that it cannot get back out...the bird is stuck in the box, alive. Reach in and grab it, but be careful it doesnt excape!!!

can you tell me where I can buy this trap online? Also, what happened when the bird
went into the hole? Starlings have taken over most of my street....I hate these birds with a passion.
