It is sad it came to this but I think he came up with a great way to help out the class. The adds seem small enough not to distract the students. Some time you have to do what you have to do. I know the teachers here spend a lot out of there own pockets for supply's. They do it by choice so the students don't have to suffer from the state cut backs. So 2 thumbs upp for the teacher here from me.
I had Farber for TWO years in AP Calculus. He was amazing! In the context of preparing his students for final exams I mean. With printing budgets down $200 from previous years, it was either spend his own cash or give fewer tests. And knowing that a vast majority of Farber's students get 5's on the AP Calculus exams, he wasn't going to let his students get away with fewer problems to solve.
I kinda wish he did it during my years cause it woulda been nice to see some ads in the middle of a test.
Just an after thought: Creativity is part of the learning process so I give the teacher an A for effort. If it's going to make that much difference in my child's education, I'd buy an ad!
Hmm...since it's a math class, let's do a problem. 1test+1teacher+1dry erase board = students answering the questions on notebook paper. Simple problem, simple solution. Now,being serious, schools are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to funding,I get that, but where does all the money go that you have to pay each new school year?Oh yeah,I forgot,it goes to give the undeserving chair warmers a raise. Not those who are out there teaching our kids!
give him credit for being enterprising and thinking of a solution to a problem
and i can't believe how well spoken and well behaved those public school kids look out in san diego. u wouldn't believe the ruffians and concrete mini-terrorists that go to some public schools other places in the country.........

500 dollars in paper is a lot, and if it comes out of his pocket, he did something smart to save money, saving money is smart...kudos to the teacher

It doesn't come out of His Pocket, HE Even said in the Video-School Budget - the school is cutting back.
since when has any teacher had to pay for the paper that Students write on for a test? Never.
