I love the feedback guitar sustained throughout most of this album. It's just briliant. I listen to this album just as much now as I did 15 years ago. I never tire of it. Monster is what turned me from a casual REM listener to a truly realizing their genius.
@Aussiephil99 I know!!! I especially loved his tone on this whole cd, it's tough, muscular. All the guitar sound was sublime on this cd. One of my all-time favs; very special and one their best.
This reminds me of the influences some of my friends have had on me. ONe in particular, I saw so much of my soul in him I too wanted to smile like him. And certain things he did I wanted to define myself with. I grew up without a dad to show me that stuff so this song makes perfect sense to me in my own way.
I saw them on their 2005 tour and they opened with this. The only band to have the audacity to open a gig with a song of it's nature. Pity the punters didn't get it thou as most where middle aged people waiting for the hits. If there was a band that don't necessarily have a straight forward setlist to follow every nite, then it's this one. They played world leader pretend that nite too which was ace!!!
I wasn't a big fan of this phase of REM, even though I bought the album and went to see the Monster tour. This album has aged quite well though, hasn't it?
After all of these years, that never occurred to me. The background vocals, and just the snaky feel of the record does have a Stones vibe to it. Thanks for that!
I agree! The whole album seems like a time warp in experimentation and current trends....and mocking both and making something that rocked and was a little out there and not normal as REM was never normal.... Not the best record ever from them, but what else was going on in this time frame?
People diss this record a lot, but it is actually quite good..critique will improve over time.... didn't stipe say he could have improved on Lifes Rich Pageant and Monster? Pageant never needed improving
Like a lot of the songs on Monster, it's about identity, and how easy it is to be derivative of others, and how so many in the entertainment industry simply recycle their influences and reflects how saturated popular music had become.
Funny thing is that it's more relevant today than ever before!
Great album, great song, great band

Has anyone else noticed that the melody is very reminiscent of Swing by the Jesus & Mary Chain?

R.E.M. Has an amazing way of telling the truth very poetically, they make you see your insides, take chances, go get what you want, cry heartily....

I really like this song. The lyrics are a bit inaccurate though.
Generally it's "if there was some confusion on who's to blame" (as in: it's the singer)
It's "I threw the brake switch", not "grey switch"
It's "I don't wanna be Iggy Pop but if that's what it takes, hey"
I also think it's "Devil, dog, Jesus, God" but I'm not sure.

Right on all counts, the final is "Devil, Dog, Jesus, God."

@Lithium40 The whole album was influended by Nirvana and was therefore derivative, which isn't a bad thing. Still a very, very good record.
