  • what's the name of this young man?

  • I didn't know robots could play the violin! That's so cool!

  • @HadeanAgent Where's the robot??

  • yang dong geun playing the violin lol

  • @The930706 haha. areumdawoyo :D

  • That Asian guy is hot...!

  • Do these masterclasses take place at a music school or a university somewhere? I'd very much like to know.

  • He should teach how to play and make faces

  • Dorogoy Maksim mechtaem popast k vam na Masterclass!!! Podskajite kuda mojno priehat?

  • I love this guy! He is so dedicated...

  • i love how the guy responds to maxim as if maxim has just slapped him in the face...

  • por mucho que se lo propongan los asiáticos no ponen alma en la música...al menos la mayoría...eso sí, mucha técnica

  • The purpose of master classes ARE in fact to have MASTERS teach how they would perform their piece. Most musicians take multiple master classes so that they can see a variety of ways to perform something. Maxim is sharing his performance style so that skill musicians can become better!

  • I completely agree about the emphasis on each note. Fa too many have performed this piece with a light touch. USE YOUR FEELINGS WHEN YOU PLAY!!

  • Technical machine? The student? He seems pretty into his music, if you ask me. A technical machine wouldn't express his playing through his facial expression or movements.

  • @Sortudinho he would cuz that s the only way he has to fake the audience that he is musical. The expression is on the bow not in the face.

  • @Sortudinho Then close your eyes and listen, he is very tense, like a train without conducer at the begining... so cold, so empty. Thats what he's on a masterclass to awake his conscience...

  • ... goose bumps..!

  • Mengla Huang exudes great personality in his interpretation of Carmen's Fantasy.

  • @LRM491 I couldn't agree more. And it shows how great Vengerov is that somebody already this good can take guidance from him.

  • Amazing. He´s wonderful

  • I love it!!!! This is great! <3

  • Is it me or is his playing not exactly as polished as I would expect from a winner of the Paganini Competition?

  • @winrx well he is playing with Maxim Vengerov listening. Wouldn't you be kinda nervous and not playing up to what you normally do?

  • Comment removed

  • @winrx Listen 2;20 if you have heard someone playing better tthat passage please tell me who! cause even Perlman play those chords that way. Remember that the only things he is viewing in the masterclass are interpretative details (which differs a lot from a violinist to another violinist )I think he definitely deserve that Paganini... At least much more than Feng Ning which in my taste plays horrible...

  • @winrx its definitely you :D

  • @gnatural Does he have any cds/mp3s coming out? It looks like his last one has been discontinued (per Amazon)... : p

  • @winrx im just a little annoyed that you would watch this video just to nit pick on what is already a very impressive performance and challenge his title as the Paganini competition winner. he sounds amazing, just enjoy the video. we always try to find faults in peoples playing instead of just listening first and trying to appreciate what is being done.

  • @gnatural So given my commentary, what would you say if I said that you play with more polish and flair than Huang? And how come I have never heard of you? : D

  • he is a great young virtuoso, Vengerov is a maestro instead, with a lot of experience on his shoulders, everything he says is gold

  • jajajaja

  • Amazing - accompanying is excellent also

  • Winning prize doesn't mean anything --except you won prize -doesn't mean you

know what violin is about -the teacher here is not too helpful -he teaches the way he would do it , not a way to serve the music .No offence meant in calling him a kid -he just looks so young and

    plays with no formed personality.

  • @dziady1 Winning the Paganini prize for a violinist means everything and more why dont you upload a video playing Carmen Fantasy rather than saying things like he plays with no formed personality? Show us if you have the criteria or personality to say that? Or better define personality? or gives examples? I guess you are a good example of why USA have such a lack of culture...

  • The kid has a technique of sorts but

doesn't seem to know the slightest thing

about the violin and what it can do .

scurrying up and down fingerboard does nota violinist make .

  • @dziady1

This "kid" you are talking about is Huang Meng La who incidentally won first prize at the prestigious Paganini Violin Competition 8 years back in 2002. :)

  • @dziady1 Paradigmatic ignorance of the Internet.

With how expressively and well he plays, I would say that he does "seem to know the slightest thing about the violin and what it can do" and that he does "play with a formed personality."

Additionally, Vengerov's instruction of his interpretation is his way of teaching how to "serve the music." This "kid" is at the level at which one can only better him through interpretational nuances as opposed to technical ones.

  • What a Professor!

  • Vengerov is a funny teacher xD

  • i liked the sound. This is supposed to be like a gyspy dance and a fantasy at the same time. 2:00-2:01 i got a chill. It was a great mixture of those two. Also I liked the pause at 2:11-2:12. This also added to brinigng those two factors up.

  • As far as I am concerned, he is damn good. Keep the good work and don't ever be discouraged by anyone.

  • @Johnnyviolonist

Yeah I closed my eyes and listened and it was boring

@jonnyviolinist12You may want to hear a violinist who 'gets the job done'

But I want to listen to something that gives me a musical experience

I actually went to see vengerov once and he wasn't totally technically accurate but what a communicator, thoroughly enjoyable

If I ever wanna see kreutzer studies performed I'll go see this guy in the video

    Because

  • @maewe. Nah that's kinda slack, I don't think it's technicality, I think it's from being "forced to play" by their parents and plus culturally, asians aren't allowed to express themselves. They are taught to be obedient and well disciplined. By making that kinda comment you're insulting not only asians, but the rest of the world and ultimately musical integrity.

  • 2:44 "chickens in the farm" lol

  • Comment removed

  • He should stop playing for a week and just listen to Spanish and Gypsy music.

  • he looks great in 2:39

    when hes smiling

he actually looks tht he likes that part

  • Makes me realize how much I suck!

  • And of course Vengerov knows all those things what Zukerman always talks about, but he doesnt want to give over...

  • You see?? This is is the difference.. What Vengerov is doing?? Im watching the video, it almost finished, and he didnt even pick up the violin. And this is the difference between Zukerman and him, or we can say, Zukerman and everyone else. Zukerman teaches! Not joking for nothing, he wants to give something, what is unique. All the big guys should do that, not just show their fantastic charisma. This violinist is very good, but he could learn a lot from Zukerman about sound technic for instance.

  • Wow.. he's all over the place. Rushing like crazy. Don't RUSH!

  • @Beeffyviolin ???

  • This was heavenly! :D And the sound was so clear, as founatain water...

  • nice

  • like many asian players, all technique no emotion

  • @maewe You have no idea how wrong and racist you are.

  • @craisslayer it's just a fact that I have witnessed in many years

  • @maewe Well I guess a lot of Asian players play very well technically and aren't very great with musicianship- just as there are many white players with great musicianship, but sub-par technicality. However, there are white players and Asian players with great technicality and musicianship; but they are rare.

  • A technical machine with no feeling

  • @Neilusful At the end of the day it's technical accuracy that gets you the job much more than the feeling. Close ur eyes and listen...

  • Comment removed

  • That's what I said!!!! He's just playing the notes without any love for the actual feeling of the music.

  • @Neilusful This is not true. This young man obviously knows his notes, and understands the overall frame of this piece. But only the wiser in experience knows how to truly milk this piece for all its worth. It takes a lot of time to know how much you can do with a piece like this.

  • @Neilusful sure, you can do it better. pffrrrzz.

  • @Neilusful far east Asians.......

  • He doesnt feel the music, i dont like it, it is spanish music, he plaies too cold...like a machine

  • he plays amazingly well

  • Great student!

  • :40 i wonder what he's thinking about... like contemplating life's biggest obstacles

  • I dont understand his musical sens....Very good technic though

  • I personally don't like Vengerov's playing, but I think that he teaches wonderfully.

  • bravo!!

  • great clip. student is v good

  • Although this was VERY good. I think students should watch the opera itself before playing the Fantasie. I think they'd have a better understanding of all the emotions and how to bring out the nuances of the piece.

  • The student learns fast. I'd like to see more of him.

  • maxim is a great violinist and teacher, wow! The student is very advanced technically, but I think he played this piece too lyrically. It needed to be more exciting and unpredictable.

  • the pianist is tadashi imai ?

  • Comment removed

  • @prajituraCuUnt

    Yes he is Tadashi Imai.

  • I really enjoyed watching this. Maxim is a fabulous violinist and seems to be equally so as a teacher. He is funny on top of it.

  • hes an exceptional musician. im convinced he really feels the "spanish character"

  • this student won't be known. just because of his face. it counts a lot these days. I also don't see much of expression. he's very good technically, but no personality and emotions are seen (other than at 2:40 where he's proud of his playing). why do they chose such students for dvd footage?

  • so true...and such a shame

  • its really sad that people think that way isnt it. heifitz, milstein, perlman and many others etc, dont have the face of models and yet they are the greatest violinist of the 20th century.

  • The student's very good as well

  • He has no idea of spanish character, fire in the eyes, and in his heart, you can not play carmen, just good, it needs the love, passion, gelousy, and hate...its just my opinion.

  • This student play very easy and artistic.

  • ı think so...

  • I won't doubt anyone who is so willingful to learn an instrument. He/she will become very successful in the future if he/she works hard... Don't give up!!!

  • 这个男生是哪个学校的?

  • 他在伦敦的皇家音乐学院,下面的回复有写。

  • Mr. Vengerov speak to expencive word's. it is free lesson... Thank you for uploading this video.

  • i wonder how many people actually realise that the reason Vengerov went into residence at the RAM and did teaching/conducting was because of a nerve injury hence he's not playing for a while

  • true.....i want to see him with his violin showing what he can do better

  • Then you want to watch a competition, and not a masterclass.

  • And a masterclass with a "master" showing his own playing is even weaker, because the purpose of a masterclass is not (or shouldn't be) a student imitating the teacher. Nobody needs someone to play something in a certain way just because their teacher played it that way, without real conviction. A musician should understand what he is doing, and do it a certain way because he thinks this is the way to do it, not because their teacher said so.

  • very well said schamschi,

when i give lessons, i NEVER demonstrate on my violin. period. i comment on the playing, interpretation and explain how to shape the piece. i then leave it to the player to shape the piece with their own interpretation, creating their own sound!

  • wtf are you guys talking about

The point of a masterclass is for the player to have a deeper understanding of the piece they're playing from a "master". I know it seems that Vengerov is telling him what to do, but thats for him to experiment a new way of playing the piece that seems more suitable, suggesting a new idea to play the piece.

I really don't understand your comments

JCviolin09: how immature is your comment and for the record he can probably do better

  • that's right. you dont understand!

  • post a vid

  • no.

  • my answer to your solution was shorter and so simple to to say. it is always so easy for those that have accomplished little to demand to see evidence of whatever. then they go on and on about total bullshit.

how about YOU post a 'vid' and then i 'might' think about it?

  • I'm not being argumentative, I genuinely would like to see a video of you playing the violin. I've already posted embarassing videos of myself wishing that I was a musical talent. I enjoy seeing real ones.

  • ah, i see!

i apologize for the aggressive and antagonistic tone. there are just so many know it all's on youtube that it is more than tiring.

i will have to decline a video post as i immensely enjoy my privacy. i am already in the public more than enough as it is. hence, my user name is a pseudonym.

i will peruse through your personal page if that is okay sine you piqued my curiosity.

  • Fair enough

  • hey "jason krick"

post a video of yourself playing, i have the perfect solution.

put a piece of paper in front of the camera lens. saying jason krick and the date you played it.

until you show some solid proof, you are just a keyboard jockey.

you're so full of shit anyone with half a brain can see through your ego

  • he looks like he's in pain.

  • Comment removed

  • @ahsusmus looks like he is in pain. and playing in the Spirit of Take that MOM and dad! making me do this!

  • @ahsusmus of course he does - hes chinese!

  • Is that mengla huang?

  • Actually that student is doing very well already... Yo~~~

  • His name, Mengla Huang. Winner of Paganini competition on 2002 and already a famous soloist on tour!!!

  • @dic888 Mengla is very gifted, I can see why he is on tour.

  • maxim is great as always but i really like the student's playing also

  • i thought it was funny when the guy interupted Maxim at 1:34 look at Maxim's facial expression!

  • What are you talkin' about? Have you ever been at a masterclass? It's not unusual that the student tries what the "master" said and I wouldn't call that incident an interruption at all. Words can only get a student so far.

  • I know, this kids an ass

  • how is he an "ass?" he's respectful and brilliant at what he's doing. explain yourself

  • what a talent.......I wonder about his age, looks very young!!

Maxim V. is probably one of the greatest violinist. Heard someone said that her retried from performances?? is this true? anyone???

  • well... hes now into conducting as far as i know, but maybe it will pass in some time, i dont know.

  • He had a shoulder injury last year so he stopped his violin career :(

But I think he still teaches and dances(<-new hobby!)!

  • Are you talking about the Asian guy? What is his name? I'd like to find more of his performance videos. I think he did an amazing job after the glissando.

  • so goood..

  • He does not use violin any more when teaching ? Pity ...

  • you dont need a violin to do clases, you dont need to show just to explain, most of great teachers cn teach better without a violi rostal, flesch auer also I think, actually if your way to teah is this ons:

hey why dont you try this and just play it is like how I do that

  • His name is Mengla Huang and he comes from China and studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London

  • who is the student??

  • Damn, still gonna play those vibratos...

  • lol,,,,,chickens in the farm!!!

  • He picks things up pretty quickly

  • i love Maxim :)

  • gota love his eye brows lol

  • 2.35 F out of tune

  • so what? -.-

  • Who in god's name asked you to reply?!

  • Dear Mr. smart-ass,

who in God´s name cares about a little intonation mistake?!

  • ur mom

  • Fuck you, who got you into this asshole?!

  • Kids, take it easy.

  • love it...

  • It was recorded in February 08

  • Is the student Mengla Wang?

  • Yes, although I think he spells himself Mengla Huang.

  • My mistake. Thanks. I wonder when this video was recorded. Huang has matured a lot. I've seen him play the Scottish Fantasy last year. He's fast becoming a brilliant musician.

  • Cool to know. I just found out about him today. He did a great job in this video.

  • I LOVE THIS PIECE!!!!

  • Very good skill. But lacks narrative ability. I think that's what Vengerov tried to convey. This is a dramatic piece, needs to tell it in a big way.

  • He's a quick learner,or at least a faster learner than that girl Maxim did the Mozart-Violin Concerto No.3 mathercalss with.

  • That's pretty sharp of you. You must know the room. The reason we cover up the board is because it has a glass front and all the lights and cameras are reflected in it. That would be pretty distracting to our viewers.

  • LOL The Royal Academy of Music's staff covered the Memorial Prize's board that is behind the piano with advertising of the Royal Academy.

  • Yes! I have my violin lessons in that room!

  • I really prefer the waxman version, but DAMN that guy is good.
