Autism was unknown to science before the 30's. Nonsense. They just didn't know what to call it. People with most mental disabilities were simply called "defectives". Once a name could be applied to it, cases of Autism started to go up. In the 1980's a standardized "test" was released. Now any doctor could (and would) diganose Autism in children, often wrongly. Case numbers spiked again. Just as the numbers of Mental Retardation, went down, by the same percentage.

And as to the idea that vaccines cause Autism. Think about this, with the billions of people who have been vaccinated, the case for a link should be ironclad. But it's not. Any link is still anecdotal, at best. There is simply no way around this. There's more evidence that Autism is related to a defect in the small intestine. RFK says that autism didn't exist before the 1930's. Autism was first recognized by the medical community in 1943. In the late 60's it was recognized as being different than MR. In the mid 80's a general guidline was published for it's diagnosis.

At each step, public and medical awareness increased. At each step, the rate of diagnosis increased as well. With the advent of the "ASD" designation, other syndromes were lumped in with autism. Which means more "ASD" diagnosis were made.
