It's strange how the U.S. portrays Britain as having no problems like this at all. The media is always saying how people in the UK are so much better off as they are "socialists" and have free health care and take care of their elderly, sick, and poor. The problems that we have in most western societies today is that somehow in the last 2 generations people feel some sort of entitlement for instant gratification. And that includes experiencing a lifestyle and wealth not yet earned. Instead of accumulating material wealth as it is earned most younger folks these days just borrow it on credit. Problem is when people borrow they are not saving.

The currency markets and bond markets are not going to be in a crisis mode forever and eventually gold prices will plummet again just as it has in the past. If that means to move into a cheaper place and sublet or rent out my house I would. But I wouldn't let myself get into a position to get evicted.

Most property management outfits as well as private landlords run credit checks to screen prospective tenants. The damage the eviction does to a person finding a place to rent is as bad as a bankruptcy is to one applying for a car loan. People shouldn't let it get that far.
All this could have been prevented had they just paid their freaking bills. If they can't then they can pay for what they can afford. I have little sympathy. This is why the government needs to built and maintain affordable rental properties! There are lots of elderly people living in 4 bedroom council houses because "they've always lived there", families need those houses, the elderly should be moved on into other housing.
@RoozleRay Its not that easy I'm afraid. If someone has a tenancy, they have a right to live in that home if they abide by their tenancy agreement, especially if they have lived there for many years. Equally, there is the ethical issue. How would u feel if someone knocked on ur door and told u that u had 2 months to bag ur things, make ur arrangements and shortly after be shipped off to a flat on the otherside of town? Is not a fair way to treat the elderly IMHO but I understand what ur saying.

But then I think that if you live in a council property and don't look after your garden (or at least grow food in it) you should be moved into a flat so there you go.

To make an intentional homeless decision the Council have to satisfy 6 tests under the Housing Act 1996. There is a lot of smoke and mirrors in this video.

What better way than to reduce the amount of people that are owed a housing duty? I wonder what would have happened if the family had appealed against the decision as is their legal right.

The Court cannot say whether the decision is right or wrong, they can only quash a decision where they believe it has been reached in a procedurally unfair way. The damage the eviction does to a person finding a place to rent is as bad as a bankruptcy is to one applying for a car loan. People shouldn't let it get that far.

All this could have been prevented had they just paid their freaking bills. If they can't then they can pay for what they can afford. I have little sympathy. Popping out kids and creating families they can't afford. Poor planning and decision making. Society has compulsary education of children for a reason. a) The *poor* shouldn't be allowed to have children, or only have a limited amount of children according to their wealth.

This is why the government needs to built and maintain affordable rental properties! There are lots of elderly people living in 4 bedroom council houses because "they've always lived there", families need those houses, the elderly should be moved on into other housing.

@RoozleRay Its not that easy I'm afraid. If someone has a tenancy, they have a right to live in that home if they abide by their tenancy agreement, especially if they have lived there for many years. Equally, there is the ethical issue. How would u feel if someone knocked on ur door and told u that u had 2 months to bag ur things, make ur arrangements and shortly after be shipped off to a flat on the otherside of town? Is not a fair way to treat the elderly IMHO but I understand what ur saying.

@omegataurus86 If I was elderly and given the chance to move from a huge home that in all likelihood I wasn't properly maintaining to a secure flat in a community of older people with help on hand, I think I would take that option. But then I think that if you live in a council property and don't look after your garden (or at least grow food in it) you should be moved into a flat so there you go.

@Somnoient According to the Housing Act 1996 a person is ineligible for social housing with a local authority if they are subject to an immigration order. They have to have indefinate leave to remain before they can even put themselves on a housing register. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I was going to use it for a down payment on a home. I am renting a tiny apartment. I have a dog that I already had and a cat that I already had and I cannot afford to even take them to the vet. This is a must see for everyone in countries like Britain and the USA where jobs are being downsized and moved out to other countries. Free trade is not fair trade. Free trade is part of the problem in the USA causing much of this. I'm not sure about Britain but I imagine it's similar there. It's really scary to think how close ALL of us are to being homeless. One or two bad turns, a loss of a job, an injury, anything can send you down the homeless road. I feel so bad for these people.

To make an intentional homeless decision the Council have to satisfy 6 tests under the Housing Act 1996. There is a lot of smoke and mirrors in this video.

What better way than to reduce the amount of people that are owed a housing duty? I wonder what would have happened if the family had appealed against the decision as is their legal right.

@omegataurus86 I don't think it's clear that they didn't appeal against the Council's decision. If upheld at appeal there is a further right to appeal to the County Court. The Court cannot say whether the decision is right or wrong, they can only quash a decision where they believe it has been reached in a procedurally unfair way. Legal processes do not reduce costs, often it's cheaper for LA to house someone, but for the tax payer you give them a subsidy of £100K per bedroom for life.

I hope many people realize that although poor and relatively uneducated families are more exposed to the likelihood of eviction, even the middle and upper classes can become homeless. I think the economic crisis has shown that everyone is only 1 or 2 tragedies away from poverty and homelessness regardless of race, religion or occupation.

It is the norm for a dad to work 2 or 3 jobs to support their families, and the children are expected to get A grades which is why they succeed later on. Sad. Housing bubble started their problems as they probably would still be in that first place if the bubble didnt grow and then the landlord could not make a huge profit to sell.
