This is a comedy that doesn't get it fair dues in the History of British Comedy imo..It had some very clever writing in it. Some of the characters were brilliant..I love the show.. 1st five seasons aswell..It did go down hill a bit after that but then again it's hard to keep coming up with material for that kind of show week after week, eh?
12:20 - Mrs. Dale's Diary went "off the air" in 1969 (only 8 years before this episode") ... not "20 years ago". It ceased being called Mrs. Dale's Diary in 1962, when it was renamed "The Dales".
Mr. Ernest Grainger (Arthur Brough) was by far the best senior salesman.
I liked the eppy with Alfie Bass who came for a job interview:
Rumbold: "This is Captain Peacock, who was fighting Rommel in the desert."
Goldberg: "Oh.... we often wandered what he did in his spare time."
I most disliked Kenneth Waller as Old Mr. Grace, Harold Bennett was so good as Young Mr. Grace. And Mike Berry (Spooner) could not compete with Trevor Bannister (Lucas).
this makes me sooo upset. i just dont even really want to see any of the episodes after he leaves.. not even worth it. its just like i dunno not the same.. ) ;
Grainger has always been my favorite character on the show, both crotchety and lovable. Liked Alfie Bass as Goldberg the best among the replacements, but none were as great at Brough's character. Thanks mtwini09 for bringing these back.

Arthur Brough died one year later. One awesome episode is coming up after this one: It Pays to Advertise. After that he was replaced 4 times and they weren't as good as he was. Best season are 1 till 5.
@ComedyStuff76 The story on Arthur Brough, who plays Mr. Grainger. Elizabeth Addyman, his wife of over 50 years died. He retired from acting and died over a month later. He really loved and adored her, and that's what makes his passing so sad.
@ComedyStuff76 I agree with you, but I am more inclined towards what mtwini09 said. Most of the episodes in seasons 9 and 10 are classics. The robbery one, but also the one with Walpole/Warpole when Ms. Slocombe 'loses her memory'
@ComedyStuff76 I thought it was only a few months after he left the show. From what I've read, he lost the will to live after his wife died. that was why he left the show.
From Mr. Grainger's letter: "and as for Mr. Humphries....Oh Dear..I did go too far!!"

@wade43671 That episode was Camping In from season 1. That was a good moment, that was.

I think the best Mr. Grainger moment was when he imitated Winston Churchill on an episode. I wish I could remember which one it was.

The thing is about this show is the characters become like family to you, i believe. The actors do seem to enjoy doing the show,... and it shows
