  • It's the PRAM battery. Sometimes if you leave the things on too long they will shut off because it died. Look on apple disscussions for the directions. Keep in mind: it is not broken!

  • Check inside you might need to get another one or replace the power supply or motherboard

  • i couldn't reinstall mac os or linux, it ejected automatically

  • my mac wasn't like that, my mac shows a stupid floppy disk with a flashing question mark.

  • @123RZ456 Then reinstall Mac OS as it cannot find the system.

  • I think that that's the end of that i mac. but you can buy another one on ebay for $50 plus shiping and move the harddrive from the old one to the new one. So you can still have all the files on the new one.

  • its eather the power supply or the power cord

i had a pc once and it turned on then turn off it was the power cord

  • Your Power supply might have died, or the logic board is fucked

  • my imac was made in 1999.

  • you serious? who actualy uses one of those pos now

  • @WAHTTHEDIEW

    I do. :3

  • @Matrix803 apart from you :)

  • okay its recalled my same mac had the same problem the power surge burned out and you need a new hard disk and new Intel i did and its all better just don't leave it on anymore take it to the apple store

  • is it plugged in?

  • Yea you need a new power suply. I have a Macintosh preforma 630cd that has the same issue

  • As many before me have commented, you need a new power supply. The power supply is often faulty on these generation iMacs. Its a cheap fix and isn't terribly hard if you know your way around a CRT iMac. If you aren't up for the repair, I' currently searching for a strawberry slot loader. I'll buy it off of you lol.

  • you need to get a new power suply

  • I am sorry to say this but your motherboard is gone just gone. They wear out on these models like the imac g3 and g4 and g5. Either that or your ram is bad. Did you just get it non working or did it stop working?

  • @macintoshman17 its not the motherboard. the motherboard should be just fine. its the PAV board. If you are very famiiar with high voltage capacitors and CRTs, you can fix it. i have the same problem now.

  • oh well im glad you figured it out.

  • You probably blew a fuse of some electronic component.

  • Red?

  • my first guess would be the PSU (power supply unit

  • Sometimes when I turn mine on, I have to rub my hands together (To gather static electricity), then I rub my hand around the outside of the power button while slightly pushing on it. This always seems to work.

  • i sort of have the same problem except when i press the the power button, no sound ,no mechanical noise, no hdd sound, no bong no nothing. and also mines the rev a imac g3 trayloader. anybody? please help, really would like to get this working again.

    hope your imac works again.

  • Buy A New Power Cord

  • i would guess that its the powersupply

  • this happened to my windows PC before. I pressed and held the PWR button for 3 secs then let go then held for 10 secs and i started. Otherwise get a new motherboard and power supply of ebay :D

  • iT is the analog board, It's stuffed

  • you need to get a new power suply

  • You Are Going To need to get a new battery.. If U take the imac g3 apart there will be a pink and black battery ..you need to replace it..

  • You Need a New Battery

  • get a new one! err something.

  • that view of the iMac with the red disc drive makes that machine look like one of the monsters from that Nickelodeon show Ahhh! Real Monsters

it looks like one of the monsters' mouths

  • lol

  • lol xbox 360's have ppc WHOOP!!

  • actually PPC macs can run windows, there are some videos that show it

  • @Chowder853 only virtual, Windows is not compiled for PPC so it won't run native. I made one program that can run on x86 and PPC, but I do have to separately compile the PPC and x86 versions, else I get a "cannot open binary file" error.

there are some programs that can be used without an OS that virtualize a x86 processor on PPC, but they are usually quite slow.

  • @Chowder853 Only emulated at slow speed. Not worth it.

  • @Chowder853 PowerPC Macs can run windows in emulation, not natively because windows (NT 3.51 i believe was the only version compiled for powerpc) was not built for powerpc processors.

  • Replace Power Supply

  • dude if none of this works u might have to get a new power supply...

  • ur abselutely right! :)))))))))

  • ok..r welcome i guess lol

  • Take all the RAM out, boot it up and if it boots, shut it down and put back in the RAM. If it doesn't boot up after you put the RAM back in, then you need new RAM.

  • Get Windows Vista!

  • maybe you should go get a life, and research Mac a little better.

  • vista(ur kidding right, he doesn't want more problems he want's less)

  • With Windows Vista, you have less problems!

  • conectalo a la toma XD

  • is it plugged in or do you want attention

  • im gonna do that when mine breaks lol

  • 1. Check Power Cable

    2. If that didn't work, open your imac and check if the RAM, Power Supply, etc. is Secured.

    3. You might want to press the button harder/

  • i have that problem too but i start it then is the screen black! please help!!!

  • This could be a CPU overload, How long has this been happening? Can you even get a start-up screen? I can help.

  • Remove all ram, replace the CD/Hard drive/cable.

start the Imac, keep the power button held. replace battery, remove all cables on logic board and add them.

  • this is something common that happens on these model iMacs. They get to hot and they loose connection to the power switch board so when you press the button nothing happens. Just open up the iMac and wiggle around that chip and hold in the button until it turns on.

  • the same computer here!!!!! please help

  • press the button harder i don't hear it clickin'

  • power supply problem? maybe?

  • well i bought a blue imac with keyboard and mouse for 20.00 on the flea market

    banjgvps

  • that happend to my teacher's imac g3, our it guy upgaraded it to 768 megs of ram, with a 60 gig hdd, but then i failed, clicking, stayed on but it like the screen went dim and ohh! it was too much for my litty eyes to see, so there i was, quick as a flash, with an os 7.8 cd rom.

  • your memory cards have fallin out of place it happined to me !

  • Obviously your powersuply is broke

  • i need some help i just got this same computer from an office and i want to install linux but i cant get past the admin passord can i still boot it without that password?

    please help if possible

  • Yes, you can. Just make sure you have a special version of Linux for PowerPC Macs.

  • yeah min did dat 2

  • My 8th grade History teacher's green iMac (original) had the same problem, it seemed completely dead. I tried stabbing at the power button some more later on, and it magically started up just fine(?). I got the ? folder when it started up, so I grabbed a Mac OS 8.6 CD

I happened to have, and last time I saw it the ATi Rage ii+ in it was pumping out Nanosaur.

  • Your logic board is fried

  • Looks like a hardware problem. Google "iMac G3 Disassembly Guide" and open up the case and reseat the circuit boards. Hope that'll help!

  • there ladies and gentlemen is the reason you never buy a mac... ive had my compaq with windows for longer than the G3 has been out and it still has never had any sort of problems the only upgrade i ever did was an upgrade to windows xp and its still fast

  • yeah right.

  • its true. my point was mac sucks. get over it.

  • I used to have a compaq laptop and it fell apart and never worked well. I decided that I had brains and got a Mac (unlike you, obviously) and I've never ever had a problem with it.

  • well first you cant compare a laptop to a desktop. and second mac just is a waste of money... why buy 2000 dollar paperweight/mac when you could get the same things (or better) for 900 dollars(a nice screen and a pc) but if you want to waste your money im not gonna stop you

  • First thing, it's only the Macbook Air that costs $2000, not a Macbook or a Mac Mini or iMac. Also, Macs are more expensive because they're meant to last (unlike PCs.) Macs also have an unbeatable operating system that never freezes (back when I was a PC user, I lost track of how many times I saw a blue screen, no joke.) And the reason why PCs are cheaper is because cheaper, crappier parts are used when they are built, thus bringing down the price. I would rather pay $ for something that lasts.

  • my point was its still more expensive than a pc and just like any computer if you take care of a pc/mac it it will last longer than any other computer. so if you like owning a computer that isnt compatible with most programs, you cant upgrade, costs more money, BUT doesnt freeze or get viruses then go ahead and buy one. im gonna stick with my pc

  • Macs are compatible with a lot of programs and can even run windows if you're that desperate for compatibility.

  • looks like "imextraordinary" is not that extraordinary MACS FTW!!!

    go apple!

  • Your compaq is from 1998 and running XP?

    Woah...

My iMac G3 is from 1998 and running OS X Tiger. Which is newer than XP.

  • i might just be the fuse in the plug thing

  • The logic board is broken dude...

  • ithe same thing happwnd to me the poer suply went let me guess little kid presses the button mant time and never shut off right power suply

  • its not dead the thing is that th plug is doing false contact you should shake it for a while unplug it some times and it will boot mine had the same problem and i was going to send it to apple but i tried to plug it at the basement before i took it and i fuckin woked u can see it in my vid go to iMac G3 VS MacBook and ull see it working wounderfully

  • apple still services those? lol

  • they still have sopport on the apple site ill try to find it and post the link they might have an answer unless if they recently took it off

  • omg throw this thing out of the window

  • you shouldnt have said that, just because it has like 10gbs and stuff dosent mean its cool, they are rare, and that person is very lucky to have one, especially a RED ONE

  • Pink!

    its a pink one... lol

  • oh sorry lol

  • iMac G3s are not rare, in fact, you just need to know where to look. Hell, I can find any old Mac in a thrift store in the right place. Just because it is old, doesn't make it rare, many silly ebay sellers don't understand that and over price.

  • i went to a thirft store they were selling a imac g3 snow for 1k

  • Yeah, some places are over pricing them for what they are. Would you really pay for a PC that is 500 MHz with CRT monitor? It is because it is all in one box, They are giveaway items but people are greedy and want to get some money off of the crap laying around the house.

  • yea really, its dumb old computer lol, i like the new imacs

  • Reset Pram

you have to open up the computer and flip a switch on the motherboard

    search apple for a guide

  • maybe, try to replace the daughterboard (with the G3 processor) and replace it

  • daughterboard wtf!!!!

    You mean motherboard!!!!

  • They mean the same thing. There are many names for motherboard. Observe,

    -Motherboard (most common)

    -Logic Board (used by Apple)

    -Mainboard (alternative to motherboard)

-Daughterboard (not sure about it's origins)

-Breadboard (not sure about it's origins)

And these are just a few names for it.

  • LOL

  • Did you try plugging it in? LOL!

But the motherboard may have totally failed.

  • The motherboard is broken. Try contacting an Apple Inc. reseller and see if they can find one and replace it with the new one.

  • It's is plug in?

  • I say it Not the Mother Board

But the Power Board Going to the Mother Bord

Witch i got a few around that i been Using For Parts

  • Yeah, the motherboard is dead. I have seen this problem with about 6 iMac G3 DV/SEs. Somehow, all but one was the color Blue. The other one was Tangerine.

  • I had a HP Pavilion from 1998 and it's motherboard is dead too!

  • Mine had this issue, turned out to be the Down Converter. It's a piece of the motherboard that connects via a black ATX style plug on the board. Best bet is to just replace the entire motherboard. Very nice once you get them running.

  • How much did you pay for the iMac at the garage sale?

  • I bought a work tray loading imac for $15 and this one was thrown in for free.

  • Your motherboard is probably bad and needs to be replaced. Was the motherboard OK before you had this problem?

  • Thanks for your comment!

I bought this mac from a garage sale so i'm not to sure if the motherboard was fine before hand.

I've opened it up and everything seems to be in place.. so chances are its the motherboard.

Do u know if these are hard to replace... or if they're actually WORTH replacing?

  • They are very easy to replace. Get one from ebay for about 25 bucks.

I'd get one with the same processor speed so that u wont have to move the heatsink.

Swap the motherboards, press the cuda button on the new motherboard to reset it and turn on!!

  • @felixriversmiguel Make sure all screws are in tightly... same problem with me...

another thing... that motherboard sound it's making means it's either damaged or unfunctional.

    I'm sorry.... D:
