  • Question: Is there a notable difference in image quality if I hook up my 1080p monitor via VGA or HDMI/DVI?

  • @Rubes2525 - Not really, no. DVI is better, yes... but I don't think it's particularly noticeable.

  • *changes to HD*

    *buffer ring appears*

  • you forgot to chang ideo to jogwheel

  • Comment removed

  • @kevin989able - No. Please pay attention.

  • Yessssss i went 1080

  • because of how slow my computer is, I had to wait twice the length of the video, for the video to load in 720p (highest I can go), where anything lower I usually had to wait 2 seconds. But that's because of my computer. If my computer wasn't so slow, I would be watching all videos in 720p. I need to wait for my dad to get home, he's a computer tech, so unlike me, he knows what he is doing. HD Rules!

  • SD Sucks HD Rocks (NO Arguments!)

  • nedd a fast bandwidth which everyone has and i hate non hd videos

  • @sparky95812 - You don't need bandwidth to watch a Bluray.

This video/argument is about video quality - not delivery method.

  • 1080 likes a boss

  • I cant tell the difference

  • @drakee510 - Then you're blind, or stupid.

    Take your pick.

  • @drakee510 you must have a visual IQ below 70 then, red neck

  • @drakee510 If you look closely the picture is a little bigger plus the colours are brighter, if you can't tell you must have some shit all over your moniter.

  • @drakee510 Only if you watched the video in a potato.

  • Just wait, a few years from now 1080 is gonna be that days 240. Minds will blow!

  • @chaoticking13 - Years from now?

I saw m first 4k image three years ago dude.

  • @chaoticking13 Well not necessarily... You have to take into account how much of a resolution our eyes can actually see, which is more than 1080p, but if you're like 5 feet away it's impossible to tell a difference except for on large screens.

  • Its 2012 and I still can't c the diff Jon

  • I'm using a 3rd gen iPod touch, how the hell do I change the viewing resolution on this thing? (I've had it for two years and I only just figured out how to comment.)

  • @Vatoftoxicwaste u cant

  • Wait wait wait a minute... Im not suppose to be watching in 240?

  • my computer can't display 1080p HD :D (I've got a single core computer that i'm using)

  • @goguy55 if you have an hd tv you can connect your pc to it and use it as a monitor

  • @jorgeasalas then you can watch hd video but your computer must have a fast processor to watch the video correctly

  • 1080p :D

I can see the trees outside his window in the reflection of the pictures. lol

  • I can watch 720, but I have to wait.

  • I can not use 1080p or 720p due to my internet speed. I can't even use 480p. I use 360p or 240p. That's sad.

  • i can watch 1080p

  • I won't lie about this, and you have to admit the same thing once in a while, don't lie to me on that. But the old days was funner then now.

  • Now I have to go find felic70's comment

  • my monitor only has 600 pixels from top to bottom, stupid netbook

  • @Jon or just a little troll

  • i hate it when i go to electronic stores and people say "its useless buying an hdtv theres no difference"...i feel like punching them in the face for saying that

  • just because you clicked 1080p resolution doesnt mean you are watching in in 1080p with a 720p or lower res monitor..

  • @Shotxofxvalor So true. I REALLY wish people would stop thinking "OH DUDE MY 240P CAMERA CAN BE TRUE 1080P ON THE TUBES, MANG"

  • Even in 480P There is an obvious difference

  • i can watch 1080 and my computer is a dell (xp)!!!!!

  • i can watch 1080

  • Yay I can use 1080p :D

  • Woah! I can see the difference!

  • Nope. Not seeing it. I still think that SD is better.

  • is a 150$ hd camera with 60 FPS good? I need a new cam

  • @EpicComplaints Well, it depends. Which camera is it?

  • @EpicComplaints Other specs matter too, like how good it is in low-light. What camera?

  • 720+ beats audio=mind blowing awesomeness!

  • So you are the guy with the channel name i wanted, well at least its being put to good use :D

  • lol internet explorer crashed when i tried to do 1080p

  • @xDragonBallZFanx Only question remains - why the fuck you're using IE ?!

  • @LolDudex5 - Bluray doesn't buffer. Neither does cable.

    NEXT ARGUMENT please.

  • HD is great, but has anyone seen the Super Hi-Vision video (Or Ultra High Definition)? Its much better than 1080p HD, but at the moment the cameras are huge. Once technology advances enough to let the cameras come down to "user friendly" sizes we all can use, this will be much better since the current max resolution of this format is 3840×2160...think of what the possibilities of that would be. Also, computers would need to be faster to process video at that resolution well.

  • Comment removed

  • when i see the difference i dont see the difference evendou i do but i dont when i do when im not doing the do and do

  • 480p isnt SD,its ED.480i is sd.

  • @Jon He is clearly talking about Counter Strike.

  • I'm noticing a bunch of people saying "the SD video looks fine at normal size, if you don't stretch your video than it looks fine and you don't need HD."

it's funny because they're right yet missing the point.

having nice looking video on a large screen is a good thing. SD looks like crap when full-screened but I can't watch that small window when I'm lying on my bed 15 Feet away, that's the purpose of HD, to let you have big video that looks good.

hopefully all the grammar is in order.

  • @SuperSlashnoBros i agree with you man SD just makes it look so good than HD that makes it look to damn clear

  • My computer is almost 5 years old and I can watch your 1080p videos without any problem.

  • @sonic2277 probly got a super pricey one at the time, or fast internet. comcast has fast internet i hear but tv sux

  • The OLD CAMERA HAS BETTER AUDIO !!! WTF

  • @AimHeadshotPy - I used the same microphone for both, actually...

  • fav video ever

  • Just (finally) bought a HD Monitor. Its a complete blast for me as a person, who worked the last 2 fucking years on a 13" MacBook.

  • I wonder how long before a...

"Side By Side: Examining 4k vs 1080p!"

...video gets uploaded to this channel and Jon rants about how crap 1080p is

  • FUCK HD! VX1 FTW!

  • And you shouldve color corrected the sd footy

  • vx1000 for life D:... XD

  • I honestly don't care at all

  • @buuski - 240p sucks. If you don't buffer that fast on 1080p just go to 720p or upgrade your internet. It does make for a better viewing experience.

  • 720P makes my computer lag lol

  • I noticed that when in 360p your shirt was a bright blue. But 720p your shirt was the same at the beginnign

  • takes longer to load videos on HD, though.

i don't like having video buffer in the middle of it and having to wait for it to buffer 100%.

i also don't think its that important to see every little detail on the screen when I can see everything i need to even on 240p.

  • I understand

I try to only edit with HD videos (which makes my editing program lag like no other) but in the end that's worth it to me

but when it comes to watching a movie it doesn't really matter to me, obviously I would pick HD if I had the choice but if I had good qualtiy 480p it wouldn't bother me

btw I'm on an imac and the screens pretty big so there is quite the difference

  • Addendum: my monitor does not use a DVI or HDMI connection - only VGA.

  • My stock 18" LCD widescreen monitor displays 1080p content quite well. It probably didn't convert the 720p (1280x720) content to 1080p (1920x1080) completely, though, but it still looks very clear.

  • wow the sound get better too

  • @duduzardoz i never had an loading time on my bluray. you need a very cheap bluray for it to do that

  • when i play 720p IT LAGS!! And when you play full hd then welcome to slide show city

  • @pat20105 you have a truly pitifull connection then. I get full Hd easily at 30mb, which so you know, isnt even that much.

  • @MrManguy17 it's not because of my connection its because of my laptop.

  • MY MIND IS BLOWNN

  • Switch it straight from 720p or 1080p to 240p

    HUGE. DIFFERENCE.

  • who the hell said that HD is the same as SD

who ever was saying that deserves to get all their electronics taken away a be replaced with the crappiest TV and computer screens that the 70's had to offer

  • I'm watching on a 23' moniter, awesome

  • Jon, you should stop arguing with people and just face it that there are stupid people around. We can all see HD is 100 times better.

  • i hate how whenever i switch my quality to HD it lags like crazy and the same with fullscreen with SD so i really cant see anything and my monitor supports 1080 HD. IS it my computer because it is way out of date or what??

  • @thejackofalltrades2 not WAY out of date.

    just out of date...

  • HD = HIGH DEMAND + HIGH DEFINATION,,

SD = SUCKING DICKS ,,SUCKING DRAMA

  • @AreebKingz hd great

    sd good

  • I always use this video when i get new monitor as a HD test becouse its just fun to watch and its FREAKING HD BITCH!

  • I can't stand youtube hd! Loads... so... sllllooooooow.

  • @metalpunkmussicjerk That depends on your internet connection. Your connection is what 's slow, not YouTube.

  • Haha, the difference is even visible on an iPhone screen. How times have changed…

  • @duduzardoz - Same as DVDs, making that point moot as well.

This video is about VIDEO QUALITY - not about platform, or loading times. Let's keep this discussion on topic.

  • @Jon Since my parents are on the market for a HDTV, I was wondering what type of TV do you have for your living room. Also everyone that my mom talks to says to buy a Samsung, and since you're a professional video editor do you think Samsung is worth the extra money or overrated? Do you have any suggestions on a TV? Thanks.

  • plaese take in to consideration the youtube videos are not 1080p as the quality downgrades. but its still good quality

  • I'm sorry you have to deal with people that don't want to understand how much sharper and clearer HD video is Jon, I feel your pain.

  • certainly a difference, but it really is not, in a house where bandwidth is fought over like the last teletubby at christmas, worth the added buffering time and/or the lag caused to others playing mmorpg's on the same conection

  • @felic70 - Blurays don't use bandwidth. Neither does cable TV.

    Your argument is invalid.

  • @Jon perfectly valid when it comes to choosing how i watch my youtube videos. when it comes to bluray, or tv, yes it's worth it, but on youtube it certainly isn't.

  • @felic70 yes it is todays internet is capable of loading a 1080p video while watching it even with my wireless slow speed.

  • You should do a video on digital vs vinyl music. im interested in your opinion

  • i understand that HD is better then SD but i have a netbook and when i switch to HD it starts to lag and i cant really watch the video properly...

i KNOW that HD is better though.. a lot better

  • My notebook has a 1080p HD screen on it.

  • and anyone who says do the math, remember atari.

  • you made teh 480p look bleh

  • Nice try guy!

HD is WORSE than SD on tape because HDV is only a few bits per thousand pixels, versus SDV which is a few bits per 100-so pixels.

SD is actually awesome just as HD is.

SD FTW. HD FTW. I'm stuck. I don't use HDV.

  • @jjovereats - Who the fuck shoots HD on tape? You're an idiot.

  • @Jon Oh flipping hell!!!!!! Pros do it all the time. They're OK with inferior 1440x1080!

And I'm OK with my 720x576i!

You're the moron (read: idiotic tankenium) here.

  • @jjovereats its good that you like it but sdxc cards all all around better than tapes for this recording, just admit it you can't afford the upgrade which is fine but sdxcs are better than tapes

  • @ausomekid88 HDV FTW (on 80 minute tape)

SDXC is not better than tape. Tape wears more evenly than those tiny big cards. Admit it: there are counterfeit SDXCs everywhere. So tape is better, because you always know the true capacity.

  • @jjovereats the only time that is true is when you buy from a cheep shadey place. that will never happen at bestbuy. admit it everything about sdxc are better. they have more capacity, smaller, and so on

  • @itsodnalro It happens everywhere. Just look at the fake USB flash drive recall at Aldi in the Terra Australis (I think you'll get it).

Tape is harder to lose as you can see it quite easily from a few metres (!) and it can't easily be choked on (for the larger DVcam and DVCPRO tapes).

Also, 833Kbit/frame for NTSC-DV (estimate) versus less bits per pixel in that same bitrate frame for HDV? I'm not buying your theories that HD is better.

    You're fired.

  • @Jon i can do 480p

  • @Jon Don't dis DV tape. Tape is MUCH easier to work with, you wouldn't need those damn PC upgrades if you hadn't gone for AVCHD. Also, tape is still cheaper than SD cards or hard drives. You don't need to store files on a (PC) hard drive if you go for MiniDV. It is also worth noting that DV footage is much better quality than AVCHD due to less compression. If your camcorder is damaged while shooting, only an hour of HD footage is at risk. So please, it's a matter of personal preference.

  • @Jon Don't many Hollywood cameras record to tapes?

  • @Marth8880 No, they either record to Film, or Digital files.

  • @Darthbrandon Whoops, yeah, I meant film. :s

  • @jjovereats wow you are a dumbass

  • @ausomekid88 I am not a dumbbum.

  • @jjovereats That's why HD is released on Blu-rays or DVD's, dumbass.

  • @startug Hello, dumbass, I am not the dumbass here. You've got your head in your big fat dressed-for-affairs pair of buttocks about this HD craze. I have not joined the HD craze. I only use HD when it's needed for the full text to be readable.

HD is released on all kinds of media, and recorded on all kinds of media too.

    So shut up you bumhead.

    Good riddance and good bye.

  • @jjovereats Bad days - Dumbasses have them too I guess.

    Goodbye, :)

  • Nice video, your a nice guy but I still don't see the real point of HD... someone sent me here, btw.

  • private paula? i lol'd

  • im watching in 240p its soo better then hd LOL jk

  • Even when I'm on 480P i can tell the clarity ....

  • HD isn't 100% better all around. SD 480p will always be easier and faster to load for your computer. Also, with HD you can see the ugly moles and things on peoples faces sometimes. But if price and loading speed wasn't a problem, I'd go with HD. But i just don't have the money for a flat screen TV, only old CRT screens.

  • @SuperSpyMonkey - The slow-speed of your internet is not a negative-factor for the medium of HD.

Do Blurays load slow? Does HD TV programming? Nope. Argument fail.

  • I SEE NO DAMN DIFFERENCE

  • @jakezanerd Listen to the freakin' vid, turn on 1080p, go to fullscreen, watch the magic. Unless u're trolling :\

  • @jakezanerd - Said Ray Charles, as he watched this video.

  • SD IS CRAP HD IS AWSOME SUT THE HELL UP HD IS THE BEST I(K I HAVE A HD CAMERA GOD

  • Im blind i dont see shit! =D

  • They both look the same on my iPod but HD looks soooo much better on my PC.

  • I always thought I couldnt see a difference and I honestly couldnt until i seen this video, thank you for comparison :)

  • The quality of HD is cool even in 480p

  • Jon, the 480p video in your case looks better relly, but only in it's original size not in full screen. But it's obvious that when you stretch it to 1080p it's going to look crapy. So here we are with bigger TV's and PC monitors and we have to watch videos on HD, otherwise it'll look awful. Still, I don't like the video quality of your new camera.

  • @Matticitt - I really don't understand what you're saying.

  • @Jon I'm sorry, I can't put my thoughts into words properly. I'll try though - I think the SD is better when you're watching it on a small TV in 480p. But If you watch it on 60" TV and it's stretched it looks crappy so we have to start using HD instead of SD. All I'm saying is that the SD quality when you watch it in 480p is slightly better than HD in 1080p.

    Cheers.

  • @Jon from what Ive read of Mattcitt's comment, he seems to say that "I dont want 1080p quality nor do I want a 1080p HD tv cause I think lower resolution is best for me blah blah blah I cant afford a HD TV or HD player even if they become cheap in price".

    I hope this helps :).

keep up the vids Jon and HD rocks

  • @Jon perhaps he meant lighting.

  • I have only one problem with this: HD is better than SD, but under the right circumstances, SD can still look damn good. Using two different cameras isn't exactly a fair comparison. I think a more fair comparison would be to film in HD, downscale it to SD and then upconvert that back to "HD" Since that's basically what movie studios do for film releases on DVD. But I should note that I myself am a bit of a videophile. I'm just playing a bit of Devil's advocate here.

  • @homestar92 - My comparison is the best you can possibly get. Because using the same camera negates the entire process of filming -- which is a big part of the comparison - the censor/lens/resolution of the original recording. The DVX and HMC are near identical cameras... making this a very valid side-by-side.

Also, that's NOT AT ALL what movie studios do for DVDs.

Nice try dude, but you'll have to trust me when I say, I know what I'm talking about.

  • @Jon Sorry if that comment came out a bit rude. I guess what I really meant was, HD on Youtube is not quite up to par with Blu-Ray. There's no denying that. And for some users on older PCs or slower connections, there's certainly nothing inherently BAD about SD. And depending on your bandwidth and GPU, the benefits of HD on Youtube may not be worth it. I will say, however, that Blu-Ray is, objectively, better than DVD in every way. And not only picture quality. But DVD is by no means bad.

  • @homestar92 - Yes, I understand that HD on YouTube may not always be beneficial... but my point is that the quality of HD itself, on any format, looks better.

  • @Jon Oh, and when I said That''s what movie studios do for DVD, I was specifically referring to taking an HD image and downscaling it to 480. And that is what they do. Because they aren't going to film the movie with two cameras specifically with the DVD release in mind. Youtube's character limit in comments kinda forced me to word that one badly.

  • Good Job Thanks BTW: You Look Kinda Asian In SD XD

  • idk about everyone else, but my computer is really slow to load HD videos. there also seems to a sync problem, sorry but i'm not watching it in HD.

  • Hilarious, my laptop's monitor is too big for 1080p.

  • I watched it on 240p (trolol)

  • @jon

ur face looks more reddish in HD than SD

  • @MrBijeet - That's just a result of my not exactly matching the white-balances of the two cameras.

  • Comment removed

  • Looks the same... Jk

  • guess what? MY COMPUTER FUCKING LAGS LIKE HELL WHEN I WATCH HD!!!

  • @runescapefamilyguygy Your computer is old then. Get better hardware. Simple fix.

  • On my computer, 480p renders smoothly and normally, while 720p is very choppy

  • I got the difference but even a year into the whole HD revolution I never thought the difference was so dramatic. But I did know the difference

    Thank you Jon

PS. I'm not a crazy stalker I just like your vids xD

  • you look better in HD,lol

  • I actually found it fun to think up all the reasons why SD could be better...

... and then watch as you destroyed them all one-by-one.

BTW i knew that HD was better but I amused myself by playing devils advocate

    Thanks.

  • @Jon Is a 720p camera good camera for smaller youtubers, or should they use a SD until they get popular? I was thinking of getting more HD video cameras, so then all my videos are in HD.

  • lol i wonder if "High definition" and "standard definition" are the same thing. Get lives people...act smart.

  • Wow, you're really good at explaining this! I found myself nodding even though I know you can't see it. I never really knew that there was a debate between the two. I thought it was just common knowledge. But seriously - you're awesome.

  • @SchmidtP89

Sure, but when you're watching a movie are you thinking of how good it looks, and how detailed it is?No,because you care about the plot, the characters and the events that unfold.Hell, even my dad says that HD quality ruins the cheesiness of the good old 80s-90s movies. So you see,it isn't just the quality of the picture that matters to many people. The old Star Wars movies are good but even in HD they still look like a live theaters to me.

  • @t3hsourcey

Actually yes, when i saw Casino Royale on my HDTV, it did amaze me how fantastic it looked. But why are you even talking about plot and characters? This video is about image quality, not whether or not movies become better by being seen in HD. It's the same movie, so of course it doesn't get any better, but it LOOKS better, and in some cases MUCH better.
