Love the drums in this song.In fairness till I heard this version I always thought Hellhammer made this album, but the guitar playing is phenomenal.Although in fairnesss Hoglan was nt good enough to play for Slayer when Lomabardo fucked off
Gene is the fucking man! I've always loved this song but the cheesy keyboards, vocals, and album production always killed it for me. Hearing the song in this light really opens it up and shows the true base of what Dimmu Borgir is... Heavy/Awesome Black Metal with a symphonic twist
@Beio1992 that makes no sense cus drummers burn a million more calories(i know not even) then guitarist theyre sweating by the time the guitarist drops 1 drop of sweat
can anyone detect if Gene is playing the ultra-fast kick-part (1) at full speed ie 4's not 3's (2) evenly (3) with single strokes or doubles? always wondered what he'd do.
@cptjackdrummer1 from what iv learned of him, yerright - it would be singles. however i'm certain then that it's threes not fours (''triplets mean three notes in the space of two - they're not just any three notes'' - my music teacher). the video is very unclear. whats the point in those footcam shots if it's not enough frames per second
@cptjackdrummer1 like the point below about the snare not being 'loud enough' in the blast bits and stuff - as we all know gene is just as guilty as other drummers of THWACKING his kicks and hands in slow bits so therefore when going into high speeds, there just HAS to be a drop in volume - there isnt enough time between the notes to do it any differently. i was thinkin about the ultra-fast part (''in sorte...diaboliiii...'') - surely there's NO way to play that in 4s, singles, with ANY volume?
@cptjackdrummer1 exactly! and then you have to be that guy who, when asked to play an ultra-fast bit he's known for on someone's acoustic set, goes ''yeah i havnet got my own set up so *excuses xcuses* - that kinda thing costs you a gig in a good band
@queenmcsleaze Sounds like 8th triplets to me, not 16ths (or 16th note triplets and not 32nd notes I guess)... Hellhammer played that part with doubles, and pretty much everyone else that could even think about playing that part would too, although someone like Ken Bedene could do it with singles.
As far as Gene goes, he does not do doubles and he has never been an extremely fast player to begin with anyway... his double bass caps out at around 240-ish.
@Steve128967 cite your source please - i want to see that (that being Ken Bedene playing anything like that which we're describing with singles. /watch?v=jWtoCieicz4&feature=related this doesn't show that, nor do any others I've had the chance to see. I'm sure it can be done with singles - weak, powerless, barely-there singles.
@queenmcsleaze check out the song Final Destiny of the Gods from the album In the Absence of Light, he holds a roll at 280 (with swiveling) for several seconds in the intro. No drum cam footage of him playing that particular song but I've seen a couple live videos and it seems like he can play it fine in a live setting, too.
And yeah, it's definitely possible to do with singles but I can't really think of anyone that plays that fast with singles, if that makes sense.
@Steve128967 the more i look at what you've said and how you've said it, the more i have to agree. for example yes it is definitely possible to do with singles in the very literal sense but it CANT sound good in my opinion. there is this classic 'the feet can do anything the hands can do' thing people say, and i disagree. i think they can do different things OBVIOUSLY because they're totally different parts of the body. every recording of ''Final Destiny...'' the ultrafast kicks DISAPPEAR.
@queenmcsleaze Yeah, "the feet can do anything the hands can do" is bullshit, for the reason that all there is between your hand and a drum is the stick, whereas with the feet you're using an entirely separate device (ie. a pedal) to make the motion.
And really super fast playing is never going to sound good without triggers anyway, but I do think (clean) singles always sound better than doubles, acoustically.
The "Belgium 2011" video sounds decent to me... audio is still kinda spotty though.
TIGHT and POWERFULL! :D But htere is something wrong with Snare track´s Gate settings. When he blasts you can´t hear snare at all but if you watch his arms while he blasts the motion is wide and I believe there is hellowa power:D
@kuzgothropia Unfortunately, it's just what a lot of drummers in the style do; during blast beats, the snare almost disappears. They are hitting it quite hard, but nowhere near as hard as they do during non-blasting sections. Since the settings are designed for the loudest possible hits, blasts don't get heard at all. Gene is absolutely amazing, but he's still guilty of that.
@kuzgothropia sure some of it is probably sound set up but the vast or at least important majority is down to the player hitting harder in the non-blasting sections and still-very-hard-but-obviously-a-bit-less-than-in-the-slower-section in the blasting sections. gene's snare is surely optimized for handling these things, but it is possibly that like any drum, the faster you go the less time the drum has to react and your ears to detect each hit.
