Me and my family just lost our cat, Pixie. She was just under 2 years old, and a very beautiful, gentle, effectionate tabby. She got hit by a car. We're now looking at dogs. &We looked at Irish Setter's. We prefer the red&white one's, but these are really really cute :). The only hesitant we have is their health. They can't be excersised after their food for a couple of hours. :(. Hope we still get a pup though! <3

@Windyfur you really should reconsider. Irish red setters are amazing dogs, but there nothing like retrievers. I know, i used to have a golden retriever, and have a setter now.

@enterprise0709 I can't say I don't dearly love my retrievers, but there's just a certain allure to the setter. My midget of a Golden/Lab (looks like a Flattie that smokes too much) is just a bit weird. Very smart and cheerful, but none too pretty. He also is horrifically crippled at just 24 months due to the poor breeding behind him, and hobbles around painfully. May have to euth him; pretty, sharp puppy he may be.

You see why I want a well-bred animal? Less pain for all of us.

This reminds me of when I went to pick mine up from a breeder in a farm, nearly 14 years ago. He's now nearly 15 and still very healthy. Unfortunately I moved away from home to go to university... I miss him so much, this just brought tears to my eyes.

bout a year ago, i wanted to get my pitt a play mate so we picked up another pitt pup that she wasnt to keen of, totally would ignore the pup so we gave the pup to my uncle, my girl friend suggested we get another pup of a diffirent breed so I let her take her pick and she decided on a irish setter, very beautiful dog and the pitt and setter of best of friends

Breeders have connections with people and know who wants their particular breed. Every puppy finds a home. We never put our pure-bred puppies into shelters. Pet-Store puppies may be over-bred. But professional, pure dog breeders do things right and healthily.

Dont let the beauty of these fellas fool you. These are a VERY demanding HIGHLY energetic dog that absolutely has to have a large fenced in yard minimum to run. I have had 'red dogs' for the past 25 years and have also assisted in the Irish Setter rescue program in Illinois. They are great dogs for children but they make an ADHD child look sedate.

Holy cow, fourteen from one poor mommy!? I thought the eight brothers and sisters of my baby were a lot for one girl to handle! I've got two, 2 year olds, half brothers on their father's side, and they are finally learning to just stay inside the fence, and get played with at home. Energy level is sky high, for sure, and you can multiply it by about ten when there's two! But you have to love them, they're such smart and handsome dogs.

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm such an animal lover myself that I'm a veggie and a caring consumer. I think on and of doing something in vetinary with pets. I'm also proud to have 2 GSD mixes. 1 is 1/2 siberian husky and the other is a shephador;.

Im thinking of buying a Irish setter. We live on 1 acre in wyoming with plenty more room to run. But wyoming can get hot (no humidity though)in the summer. Ive always had Labs but there is no water in this state. Any advice would be great

Irish setters LOVE wide running spaces, they are very active dogs. While they can get along fine with a regular sized yard, it's very good that you have an acre. But Irishes do have rather long coats, and any dog can overheat if in the sun for too long, but it's simple if you just don't leave them outside too long. Give them a water bucket out there, and let them come in when they want to.

Go ahead and get yourself an Irish Setter ! They are one of the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen, their copper/mahogany color coat is magnificent. Care should always be used with any dog, along with common sense. Always have plenty of fresh water for your dog, they get thirsty. They will reward you with unconditional love and you will have a partner for a very long life. Give your dog good dry dog food to help keep it's teeth clean. You won't regret it. Keep me posted !

Irish Setters are nice social dogs, and they get along with other dogs well. My Liam just loves to play with other dogs, and as puppies they aren't too shy either. Just so you know, if that was her concern. I hope you can get the Irish! :)
