"Frank Marino (Francesco Antonio Marino), born November 20, 1954, in Montreal, is the guitarist and leader of Canadian hard rock band Mahogany Rush. Often compared to Jimi Hendrix, he is acknowledged as one of the best and most underrated[2] guitarists of the 1970s." Nuf said
Holy crap, Frank never fails to rise an instant woody with his playing, but I am most impressed with the playing AT THE END !! who are those guys? specially the guitar player with the Suhr??
We all now what a great guitarslinger Frank is, but please, does someone know who's playing in the end of the clip? It sounds fantastic. From what I can see it seems to be like an TV-show of something from Quebec and in the year of 2001, right? I'm from Sweden so it ain't the easiest thing to look up, but hopefully there will be someone out there that might know something about it, ok?
I live in Quebec City, Canada. The name of the TV show is Le plaisir croît avec l'usage. The guitar player name is Donald Meunier. There are a few clips of him on You tube. He is a studio musicians and he plays for artists on tour in Quebec. The lady in the show is Nanette Wokman. She was born in Mississipi but she lives in Quebec since the 60's or early 70's. She has done back-up vocals for the Rolling Stone. She is a really good singner. Very bluesy.
Without looking this up, I'm pretty sure that she also did background vocals for Frank on Tales of the Unexpected. Sister Change maybe. That's definitely one little girl who understands.
The only other guitarist I've had the good fortune of seeing live who compares to Frank is Stevie Ray. Frank effortlessly channels through instrument from another world....love him!
@tfbis44 You had to be there back in the 80's at Montreal's Jarry park when Frank opened for Stevie Ray. Both on the same bill. I left the show exhausted having been bashed, bruised and beaten by some of the most lethal licks and chops in the business. Amazing
@freshnotfresh Nanette Workman, just a little over 60 and still amazingly beautiful, she had a big career in Quebec as a blues rock singer and she made a couple of albums with the Sones ,she's the woman voice you here on Honky Tonk Woman for example.....very nice woman and a great Harley maniac (yes she is perfect)
I also have to add at the Little Five Points show that the guy that did the psychedelic oil and water projected on a screen behind the band worked just as hard as Frank did, great show!
I Saw Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Back about 73' downtown Orlando, and then again 3 years ago in Little Five Points (Atlanta Ga) And he was even better then before.
Rarely does an artist not disappoint what you remember from your teenage memories.
I have never seen him live - yet. But a buddy of mine did and said that, I think it was on "Stories of a Hero," his playing literally brought tears to his eyes. I can see that happening & I can't think of anyone else on this earth, past or present, that could even come close to expressing that much emotion on the guitar. Frank is the man!!

Frank is mind blowing and so sadly underrated and overlooked. Taste, tone, chops, impeccable technique and a melodic sensibility that just rules. Amazes me that his power and technique have not diminished at all over the years, He's as good or better than he was in the 70's. He's gotta be 60, or close to it, and look at him
I've always heard the story about how Ted Nugent got his ass spanked back in the 70's after coming onstage during Mahogany Rush's set and starting a guitar duel with Frank, but other than that I've never really known that much about the man's playing. But now I sure get it! The 'Nuge' was an idiot for trying to match this guy.
Wow, that was amazing!!!! Solid Blues right there.
He sure is a great guitarist, and i love his style - i also enjoy his version of "The Things I Used to Do", on Hats off to SRV. Thats fucking music!!!
Frank was never appreciated in his hometown of MONTREAL , Canada ( where at age 15, he could play the American National Anthem almost exactly like Jimi Hendrix' s version at Woodstock in 1969 !! ) ... but he eventually became a GUITAR HERO in California ( of all places !! ) ... It' s probably due to the fact that he could not speak a word of french !!! And in Montreal, that's almost a sacrilege !!!! LOL !!!
@Khe4269 It's a shame that he was not appreciated here only because he was unable to speak french. I'm a native french speaker from the province of Québec and I think that the true shame is that he was not raised in Italian (the native language of his father). Imagine if I where born in a place like in Germany and only tought to speak english even if it ain't my parent's language nor the place's official language, would be kinda weird, no?
@MrAssbaron I'm trying to say that it's a shame that parents who are not native english speakers teach their children to speak english instead of the local one. Parents should teach THEIR language(s) and/or the local one. In Montréal it's getting harder and harder to heard something else than english. I'm not bashing the english speakers, only the instoration of english as the standart language for any non-french native speaking people. French can be learned as well? No?
@blackout1991 My parents are also immigrant, however they didn't teach me English since they didn't speak it themselves. They taught me my mother tongue which I'm proud of and English was my freedom of choice. French was forcefully shoved down my throat against my will. So much for a free and civilized society. As far as Montreal is concerned, French is what I hear predominantly.I'm proud of my roots and no language law can change that.Today most non French natives are forced to speak French.alas
@MrAssbaron I can I understand, but let's imagine that my parents were born in Poland (exemple) and that for some reasons they established themselves in Algeria (an ex-french colony in which french has no official status) but instead of teaching me polish or arab as first language, they taught me to speak french. Most of the people around speaks it and some may even enjoy to, but it might disturd some of 'em as well.
@blackout1991 You see immigrants have traditionally taught their children their mother tongue so they can communicate with one another. The children usually pick up the common language of the children they grow up around.in my case I grew up with English speaking immigrants since the French kids despised us and showed unprovoked hostility towards. It was a case of misdirected animosity. I have known many Italians that don't speak a word of English only French, and many don't even speak Italian
@MrAssbaron I never felt any hostility against immigrants or even local english speakers, I study languages so I personnaly don't mind speaking english to someone who prefers to communicate with it. But when I think of my grand father who never spoke a word of english and was told ''Speak white!'' because he dared to ask to be answered in his language which was as a matter of fact the same one as 90% of the local population.
@blackout1991 I do feel there is some underlying animosity in your tone, very similar to militant Francophones who have a problem with English being spoken
within their vicinity. Although locally most people speak French we still allegedly live in a free society, free to chose our expression. Liberty is precious when you have it. Funny though for a musical post how did you manage to comment not on Frank's playing but on the language issue.
@MrAssbaron I have'nt started the fire, I responded to an existing comment about the way Frank could not speak a word of french. But I do agree with you that it's kinda funny to speak about languages instead of Marino's magical playing. Thought I'm 19 he has always been to me the best guitar player in the whole Canada. But I would like to clarify that there was no animosity in my vocabulary, I meant to share opinions not to offend you in any way.
@blackout1991 Well my friend just by mentioning language in a forum that does not warrant it is throwing a slap in the face. You mentioned nothing of music. I get deeply offended when the language issue is mentioned. Do you know for a fact that
Frank doesn't speak French? Do you know if he speaks Italian or Arabic? Since you're only 19 you are too young to know and reading about it is not the same as living it first hand.
Frank Marino has always played some of the tastiest most ass kickin solos in music . This is just my opinion. I feel like he has Never received the the Respect he deserves. I met Frank a few years ago when he played a show in a small venue in Fort Worth Texas. It was a small venue called Caravan of Dreams,of course the show was awesome! I talked to Frank during a short break and he is a class A act all the way. Give the man the respect he Deserves! HE HAS DEFINITELY EARNED IT.
He is also a great vocalist everything he does he does it with feeling. That's what is lacking in today's music is feeling,To me music without feeling is dead
Yep, my brother well said, Frank Marino is rock's best kept secret. I love him, he's amazing man. I've seen him here in Dallas a few times. I even met him and he signed his cd's for me. Great guy, breathtaking guitar player.
what do you CLOWNS mean by all of this "YEAH" shit ? --- do you even know what Frank is all about --- PLEASE reply back if you have any balls and lets get this "sh*t out in the open !!! --- I will wait to hear from the "morons out there who think they know what they arre talkin about --- the clock is "ticking" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@DavePaulsen1 hey Dave, why dont you open your fucking ears for once in your life. If you knew anything about great guitar(which you dont), you would agree with the rest of us
my brother bought an album of your back when i was about 12- 31 years later i am still listening to it, you are a very underestimated group, you should have made it allot larger that you did, what can i say! "you rock"
OMG - Was he smokin' or what? Great video - I loved Mahogany Rush 40 yrs ago when I was a teenager & I still can't sit still when he gets rockin' - what a legend...
This dude has it all. The licks, the look, the voice. Makes most guys on the scene look lame. Saw him in 77 in Toronto opening for Nazareth. Guess who left the stage still smokin. Nazareth who?
At the beginning of the video? Nanette Workman, famous American-born Quebec pop singer who does a great career from the mid-late Sixties until now , she sang the french of Patty Labelle "Lady Marmalade" around 1974... known also for being chorist for Johnny Hallyday, and her notorious recording in the world as a chorist was on Stones "Honky Tonk Woman"... the TV show was "Le plaisir croit avec l'usage" from Tele-Quebec
Frank comes from a a time of the dinosaurs: when playing extended lead guitar solos actually meant something, and was appreciated by an audience. Blame the 80's and emphasis on speed over taste for ruining it. Today, people couldn't care less about solos or guitar in general. Frank is the most undervalued musicians I know of. Blows away everyone when it comes to chops, feel, and SINGING. Only Trower and Robben Ford are comparable as far as 'blues' goes, but Ford throws in more jazz influences.
dude ..couldnt say it better...thanks crappy grunge and seatle crap for helping ruin lead guitar solos...and to make it worse ..hacks like our lady peace and billy corgan for playing badly for fashionable reasons....pretentious shit...creeds guitist is also feelless...who else mainstream..mettalica's kirk hammet = zero tasty vibrato
Well said. All it needs is for one 'modern' band to do a guitar solo and the rest would follow suit. It just needs a band with some guts. They're all so afraid to do anything different. Except perhaps, The White Stripes, Muse, The Killers, Radiohead and Portishead.
Hendrix, Zappa, Kossof etc. I wish they were all still with us.
@shatnershairpiece Just to add to your list including Trower would be Pat Travers, he is also under rated as a musician and has great Chops and vocals. I was never a fan of his hit Boom Boom out go the lights but had listened to the playing the other day and even on that track it was amazing...
I'm 47 years old - which probably supports your argument.
In MY opinion, the guitar solo - per se - is not important. What IS important is the person playing that solo - And every note Mr. Marino has played sends shivers down my spine.
The man is beauty and grace, and he taught me almost everything I know on guitar. I had the pleasure of meeting Frank at Entex back in the late '80's and it was a dream come true.
Great post. I love the woman co-hosts surprised response to Frank being on the show. Wow, says it all...
Frank is a major influence in my playing. He showed me how to deliver meaningful repetitions followed by face melting string bends that cry out and connect with an audience. The 1978 Mahogany Rush Live is a must have for you players out there.
Hell yes it is, "I would play that album for these young gun and roses metallica fan guitarist kids, and they always had a shocked look on there face's..The tone melts, and it shreds period.
I think Frank is a way better guitar player than Gary Moore.Don't get me wrong Moore is a great player, but lets speak honest, the guy just runs out of ideas in his solos and he's more commercial with his ballads.Frank just nails every note he plays,Moore just reproduce his playing especially when he's TRYING,I repeat TRYING to play the blues.
just amazes me and there is NO ONE on this planet who plays more lead guitar than Frank --- Frank plays more lead and hits (rapid fire) notes usually in one (1) jam than "MOST" of the guitar players out there play in an enture show ! '--- I saw him in 2005 in Cleveland open up with "Voodoo Child" and he played a solo that was 17 minutes long and the song was 29 minutes ! --- OF 100% pure accuracy and just over-all amazing --- You know, I / we can go on and on about this BUT !!! --- Frank RULES !
OK , here we are a couple of months later and I will still stand "firm" on my opinion ! --- Frank is the most incredible guitar playing person who has ever picked up those 6 pieces of wire strung to a piece of wood ! --- He is lightning fas (not that "fast" means you are the best) but he is and his volume accompanied with his pedals and his haunting sound effects like bombs going off and also given the fact that he hardly ever looks at his fret boaed while he is playing his guitar, ** CONTINUED*
I've been to the Pyramids of Egypt, survived the great flood, been rescued from the burning of Rome, even watched a grown man satisfy a camel but have never seen a guy rock like Frank Marino !! This guy lights me up every time I listen to him !!!
Frank's an amazing musician. I've seen him about 5 times now (first time was in 2000, when he first returned to playing music regularly), and he always puts on a fantastic show. The guy plays for three hours, playing super long guitar jams on practically every song, with next to time taken between songs. He says thank you, checks his tuning real quick, then almost immediately launches into the next barn burner.
It's always a pleasure to hear him play. If it wasn't this damnable intermiissions caused by the adobe flash player cutting out all the time. I've seen the top comment and mine was one of hose mouths. Hearing him play one doesn't need to take a half a hit of blotter to be put a good mood. Even in his angrier tunes, Just let me play my Music.==buzzhard p,k,==

LOL !!!
Khe4269 1 year ago
@Khe4269 It's a shame that he was not appreciated here only because he was unable to speak french. I'm a native french speaker from the province of Québec and I think that the true shame is that he was not raised in Italian (the native language of his father). Imagine if I where born in a place like in Germany and only tought to speak english even if it ain't my parent's language nor the place's official language, would be kinda weird, no?
blackout1991 1 year ago
@blackout1991 What are you trying to say ,mate. It's a shame that he speaks English ?
MrAssbaron 1 year ago
@MrAssbaron I'm trying to say that it's a shame that parents who are not native english speakers teach their children to speak english instead of the local one. Parents should teach THEIR language(s) and/or the local one. In Montréal it's getting harder and harder to heard something else than english. I'm not bashing the english speakers, only the instoration of english as the standart language for any non-french native speaking people. French can be learned as well? No?
blackout1991 1 year ago
@blackout1991 My parents are also immigrant, however they didn't teach me English since they didn't speak it themselves. They taught me my mother tongue which I'm proud of and English was my freedom of choice. French was forcefully shoved down my throat against my will. So much for a free and civilized society. As far as Montreal is concerned, French is what I hear predominantly.I'm proud of my roots and no language law can change that.Today most non French natives are forced to speak French.alas
MrAssbaron 1 year ago
@MrAssbaron I can I understand, but let's imagine that my parents were born in Poland (exemple) and that for some reasons they established themselves in Algeria (an ex-french colony in which french has no official status) but instead of teaching me polish or arab as first language, they taught me to speak french. Most of the people around speaks it and some may even enjoy to, but it might disturd some of 'em as well.
blackout1991 1 year ago
@blackout1991 You see immigrants have traditionally taught their children their mother tongue so they can communicate with one another. The children usually pick up the common language of the children they grow up around.in my case I grew up with English speaking immigrants since the French kids despised us and showed unprovoked hostility towards. It was a case of misdirected animosity. I have known many Italians that don't speak a word of English only French, and many don't even speak Italian
MrAssbaron 1 year ago
@MrAssbaron I never felt any hostility against immigrants or even local english speakers, I study languages so I personnaly don't mind speaking english to someone who prefers to communicate with it. But when I think of my grand father who never spoke a word of english and was told ''Speak white!'' because he dared to ask to be answered in his language which was as a matter of fact the same one as 90% of the local population.
blackout1991 1 year ago
@blackout1991 I do feel there is some underlying animosity in your tone, very similar to militant Francophones who have a problem with English being spoken
within their vicinity. Although locally most people speak French we still allegedly live in a free society, free to chose our expression. Liberty is precious when you have it. Funny though for a musical post how did you manage to comment not on Frank's playing but on the language issue.
MrAssbaron 1 year ago
@MrAssbaron I have'nt started the fire, I responded to an existing comment about the way Frank could not speak a word of french. But I do agree with you that it's kinda funny to speak about languages instead of Marino's magical playing. Thought I'm 19 he has always been to me the best guitar player in the whole Canada. But I would like to clarify that there was no animosity in my vocabulary, I meant to share opinions not to offend you in any way.
blackout1991 1 year ago

Only Trower and Robben Ford are comparable as far as 'blues' goes, but Ford throws in more jazz influences.

well said. Frank is a God of Guitar Gods.

dude ..couldnt say it better...thanks crappy grunge and seatle crap for helping ruin lead guitar solos...and to make it worse ..hacks like our lady peace and billy corgan for playing badly for fashionable reasons....pretentious shit...creeds guitist is also feelless...who else mainstream..mettalica's kirk hammet = zero tasty vibrato

@jamanursula Kirk Hammet lands on so many bad notes while soloing his
plane should be grounded for life.

@jamanursula Not strictly true,Pearl Jam had some good guitar live solo's in the early years,eg.Even Flow,Alive.

@shatnershairpiece
ScotRanger1960 1 year ago
@shatnershairpiece Just to add to your list including Trower would be Pat Travers, he is also under rated as a musician and has great Chops and vocals. I was never a fan of his hit Boom Boom out go the lights but had listened to the playing the other day and even on that track it was amazing...
2047utube 1 year ago
@shatnershairpiece
I get shivers listening to this.

God bless Frank Marino & family.

Hell yes it is, "I would play that album for these young gun and roses metallica fan guitarist kids, and they always had a shocked look on there face's..The tone melts, and it shreds period.
dannyhood66 1 year ago
I think Frank is a way better guitar player than Gary Moore.Don't get me wrong Moore is a great player, but lets speak honest, the guy just runs out of ideas in his solos and he's more commercial with his ballads.Frank just nails every note he plays,Moore just reproduce his playing especially when he's TRYING,I repeat TRYING to play the blues.
Stilldrank 2 years ago 3
just amazes me and there is NO ONE on this planet who plays more lead guitar than Frank --- Frank plays more lead and hits (rapid fire) notes usually in one (1) jam than "MOST" of the guitar players out there play in an enture show !
DavePaulsen1 2 years ago
OK , here we are a couple of months later and I will still stand "firm" on my opinion ! --- Frank is the most incredible guitar playing person who has ever picked up those 6 pieces of wire strung to a piece of wood ! --- He is lightning fas (not that "fast" means you are the best) but he is and his volume accompanied with his pedals and his haunting sound effects like bombs going off and also given the fact that he hardly ever looks at his fret boaed while he is playing his guitar, ** CONTINUED*
DavePaulsen1 2 years ago
Let's face it - there are only about a half dozen other electric guitarists on Earth that are in Frank's league when it comes to blues rock.
One is Gary Moore. The other is Jeff Beck. The third would be Sonny Landreth. And maybe Doyle Bramhall II and Eric Gales.
Lord, can you imagine Frank and Gary Moore on an album TOGETHER?!

And he's a super nice guy too.
