I went to CofC for almost 20 years. And I still agree with putting creeds aside and sticking with the bible alone. The problem I noticed is that CofC uses bible translations like the NIV, ESV and NASB which were translated to fit the pre-assumed creeds and covenants of other denominations. Accurate translations like the YLT are frowned upon by the CofC because it condemns prostitution rather than "immorality" and it otherwise doesn't have the hell-fire damnation many CofC preacher like.
The bible was not made to be a "how to manual". The Church was established some 400 plus years before the Bible was ever consolidated into one book. Christ DID NOT leave us a book nor did he ever write one. What he did do was appoint twelve men to establish his Church spread the word. That Church then created the Bible from the writings left by those men and their disciples. This Church still is alive, just like Christ said it would be. The Church never needed a bible to justify it's existence.

I was a preacher in the CofC for 20 years. Now that I'm away from it, I see a lot of errors in their teaching. But it's hard to see when you're so immersed in it! Having said that, In spite of misshapen teaching, there are still a lot of good folks in that movement. Some of my family still is. Just keep them i prayer, that many will find their way out. @kjdavey I would love to get into with you but my own personal experience has been that people won't change when they are saturated in their own doctrines. I was the same way when I used to preach in the church of Christ. No matter what the argument, I simply dismiss it because after all I was right and they were in the wrong. If we claim that one act of obedience to God's law (i.e., circumcision or baptism) effects our salvation in any way, then we are likewise duty bound to obey the whole law of God perfectly in order to effect that same salvation. Salvation is all of God and it is all of grace. We do not save ourselves nor do we have any part in it. God saves us wholly and totally. Christ came to save HIS PEOPLE from their sins (Matt. 1.21).

But the doctrine that concerns me most is your doctrine of baptism being required to effect salvation, instead of baptism being a fruit or act of obedience evidencing a new heart and salvation. The former, applying to the individual, is termed 'sanctification', the latter, encompassing the church, is termed 'reformation'. The church today knows (or ought to know) more than that of the first, or even of the 15th century.
Confessions of faith such as the Heidelberg Catechism and the Westminster Confession (1643) claim to be nothing more than summaries of the major doctrines of the faith. They do not claim to be authorities in addition to scripture. They are only authoritative insomuch as they reflect scripture.

Anytime someone says we should not listen to or read anything except the bible on spiritual matters, he is contradicting himself - because he is at that point speaking about spiritual things. I went to CofC for almost 20 years. And I still agree with putting creeds aside and sticking with the bible alone. The problem I noticed is that CofC uses bible translations like the NIV, ESV and NASB which were translated to fit the pre-assumed creeds and covenants of other denominations. Accurate translations like the YLT are frowned upon by the CofC because it condemns prostitution rather than "immorality" and it otherwise doesn't have the hell-fire damnation many CofC preacher like.

The bible was not made to be a "how to manual". The Church was established some 400 plus years before the Bible was ever consolidated into one book. Christ DID NOT leave us a book nor did he ever write one. What he did do was appoint twelve men to establish his Church spread the word. That Church then created the Bible from the writings left by those men and their disciples. This Church still is alive, just like Christ said it would be. The Church never needed a bible to justify it's existence.

I was a preacher in the CofC for 20 years. Now that I'm away from it, I see a lot of errors in their teaching. But it's hard to see when you're so immersed in it! Having said that, In spite of misshapen teaching, there are still a lot of good folks in that movement. Some of my family still is. Just keep them i prayer, that many will find their way out. @kjdavey I would love to get into with you but my own personal experience has been that people won't change when they are saturated in their own doctrines. I was the same way when I used to preach in the church of Christ. No matter what the argument, I simply dismiss it because after all I was right and they were in the wrong. We will go back and forth debating certain doctrines and then in the end, nothing will be accomplished except for the raising of blood pressure. God bless your search!

If we claim that one act of obedience to God's law (i.e., circumcision or baptism) effects our salvation in any way, then we are likewise duty bound to obey the whole law of God perfectly in order to effect that same salvation. Salvation is all of God and it is all of grace. We do not save ourselves nor do we have any part in it. God saves us wholly and totally. Christ came to save HIS PEOPLE from their sins (Matt. 1.21).

No, we have a decided advantage over the eunuch: we have the complete, final, authoritative Word of God to study daily. The eunuch didn't have that at the time of Acts 8 and very likely never had it. Anytime someone says we should not listen to or read anything except the bible on spiritual matters, he is contradicting himself - because he is at that point speaking about spiritual things. The apostle Paul was not talking about Catholics when he warned about those who forbid marriage and forbid eating certain foods. So who was he talking about? The answer remains somewhat speculative, but Paul apparently had in mind ascetics who taught that marriage and certain foods were fundamentally evil. Several movements in Church history have promoted these teachings, the two most notable examples being the Manicheans and the Albigensians.

I was just thinking the same thing. You say I cannot obstain from meat on Fridays and Jesus even said we will fast and tells us how we can fast. (Matt. 9:15 and Matt. 6:16-18). What do you define as a religious act? Did Paul perform a religious act when he said "I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize." (1 Cor 9:27)?

Daniel obstained from eating meat but I cannot (Daniel 10:2-3)? Catholics use a practice similar to Daniel's when, as a way of commemorating Christ's Crucifixion on a Friday, they abstain from eating meat on that day of the week during Lent. The only kind of flesh they eat on Friday is fish, which is a symbol of Christ.

Paul later used Haggai's prophecy to show the permanence of the New Covenant, which has come to replace the Old (Heb 12:26ff). Is that what you might be referring?
Even a baptist commentator does not believe the OT replaced the NT on the web. Jesus said: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.".

Really? The historic Christian Church has always held that Christ’s law applies to infants as well as adults, for Jesus said that no one can enter heaven unless he has been born again of water and the Holy Spirit (John 3:5). More detail is given in Luke’s account of this event (Luke 18:15–16).

I Want To say Mr. Believer I Do Not question Your Sincerity of Your Faith, But I Do question Doctrine. If I go To A Doctor and He is Sincere About A so Called Problem I Might Have, But was dead Wrong did That Change The Outcome Of The Situation? I am sure you do not believe everything you are told by individuals. I see written history telling me that the RCC is Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth, Christ's Church.
Man’s ingenuity cannot account for this. The Church has remained one, holy, catholic, and apostolic—not through man’s effort, but because God preserves the Church he established (Matt. 16:18, 28:20).
