If there's 100 cm2 road contact of two tyres to put force to the track before slipping, that allows more force than if there is only 60 cm2 of one tyre, SO more acceleration! Downside must be unsprung weight though. Nice vid, thanks.
I think this would be very bad in some hard braking circumstances. I believe this would lock the front and rear tire speeds together all the time. This would be bad for more experienced riders who are riding hard on a track but probably better for novice riders who have a hard time splitting their braking effort efficiently to both front and rear tires. I think this would be great for street, and bad for the track.
@19882007irish it is just like a 2WD and AWD cars, yes the AWD are heavier but they can put more power to the surface of the road, so even though they are heavier and a bit slower because the extra load for turning another wheel would be pay off with a good traction and acceleration for examples when you exit a corner or start from stand still CMIIW
@JustMyHobbies but it only works with cars that have lots of horsepower and have trouble getting that power to the ground, bikes dont really have trouble getting the power down they have trouble keeping the nose down. plus bikes get really back heavy when exiting corners unless youre not on the gas, i can see the front slipping out now x.x
@JustMyHobbies honestly i dont know for a fact but i would probably say no. i wouldnt want both of my wheels spinning at the same speed going around a corner, and by that i mean going fast not just goofing around, i would think that the whole bike would just slide sideways and the front would flop to the ground. a 4x4 is different than a bike, just my opinion though
The bike must be measurably faster than its rear-wheel-drive counterpart...
I mean, when you accelerate from a standstill, the front wheel doesn't want to move because of Newton's first law. But, with two wheel drive, everything the bike is sat on wants to move; so the bike has less choice.
Back to the bike here. Is there a pressure dump vavle of some sort to help facilitate braking? Otherwise, the front wheel keeps trying to drive while you're wanting to slow down.
@davidworth7 hmm.. I would have thought the hydraulic pump would continue to drive since the final drive output of the bike will continue to spin (as it's attached to the chain). Hence, the hydraulic motor will want to turn unless there is some way to dump the pressure being sent to said motor. I just can't imagine there is a clutch up front to accomodate that. I'm not a mechanical engineer either so maybe it's more obvious that I'm making it.
@mikemk92 Right I understand what you mean, but when you look at him put in down into first gear it jumps with the rear and then doesn't move until the clutch is engaged. Just a thought though. I'm clearly no expert, or I'd be working for them
@mikemk92 As I understand it, the hydraulic pump is driven by a gear that is attached to the final drive sprocket. The drive to the front wheel will be the same as the drive to the back wheel (or a ratio thereof depending on the drivegear.) If the rider is braking and has the throttle closed or has disengaged the clutch then there will be less/no drive to the front..just as there would be less/no drive to the rear = No dump valve necessary.
@gammelman1 Haha how funny you think you're going to make a difference. If you don't like the website then don't go on, they don't give a fuck about what you think. Stop being a whiny bitch.
@zookeeper2345 oddly enough, heres how it runs youtube has to have adds to pay for court cases cause music companies are stuck up and dont like ppl giving them free advertising by using 1min of their songs, and also even to this date it is actually illegal to copy music from cd to cassette, and by laws your not even supposed to copy music to your mp3 players! but everyone does it and you are right web page hosting isn't free and doesn't get cheaper!

The HP loss on the mechanical is only 1/10th of 1 HP vs. over 3 HP on the Ohlins Hydraulic. The cost is the same as stock bikes too.....

@elliotfmx there is alot of point, gets the power down better, faster 0-60, and now you can use engine braking on all wheels. but i suppose this would be more useful on an offroad bike
@gammelman1 Your a moron, theres only adds all over youtube so that they dont have to charge us to watch video's, it costs them loads of money to keep it running. use your head.

@b1perry a good try, but clearly no. the "freebies" are part of the cost of paying customers' meals. Someone, somewhere has paid for it. Let's say a business never makes a sale and hands out freebies...no one pays, right? Wrong, the the restaurant owner or creditors who loaned money for the guy to start up the biz are on the hook. You can also think about the fact that it costs you a guy yelling "doodoodootrymychickenwhitemandoo!" every time you go by, whether you want it or not...
@kenfo0 LMAO! thats pretty racist and funny. However i do agree that the Ads on here are necesary for you tube and the copyrighted material well if its not legal you cant post it get over it lol
@b1perry I have nothing to get over. I see everything as it is, not as I need it to be for my comfort. If others saw as I see, the world would be a far better place. Also, don't blame the ching-chong-chinaman for being racist. It's all he knows, and it's funny to boot!
@gammelman1 why don't YOU make a vid site with expensive equipment, people to run it and WAN connections, etc and don't run some short ads to pay for it...pay out of your own pocket. Yeah, I thought not. You are not entitled to anything for free. grow up and stop spamming this whiny nonsense.
Ha - there ya go... Back in the mid to late 80's I used to read Performance Bikes. I'm convinced I havent aged in the last 25 years. But TFranklin, you old git hee hee. I wouldnt have recognised him! Now more importantly how did it ride? I've often had to contend with a practically non rotating front wheel coming back down to the tarmac at 130+ mph, interesting it is.
@gammelman1 Youtube isn't greedy. There would be no way to keep the site free if it wasn't for the ads, so if anything, they are generous for letting people who hate them and call them greedy view their site for free.
The front wheel would need to rotate slightly faster in a corner othwise the bike would want to always upright itself . For an example of this hop on a bicycle and go in a circle and look at the rotations. At speed on larger corners it is less of an effect but is still prevails. could be overcome with wheel speed sensors and valving not sure if this has that but cool never the less.
I wonder that it would feel so weird to drive with 2 wheel drive bike...I've seen same system on Hayabusa....but Hayabusa is like a huge toy to all the tuners. :D
I can see using a basic system like they have for an offroad bike, and indeed some of the rally and enduro race bikes are two wheel drive, but for a street bike I think you'd need some computer control to vary the amount of power being sent to the front wheel to match the situation, along with traction control for both wheels.
I wander how it handles? torque steer? loss of traction coming out of a hard corner? That "ride" really sums it up.....no feedback about it whatsoever in this vid.
Also, I wander if the front wheel "freewheels" off the throttle, or if it decelerates like the rear wheel does? I guess i'm off to find the June 8 issue of MCN
That's it? No feedback whatsoever? What's the point of MCN being "the only publication in the world to have ridden it" if anyone can search for some riding footage?!
@fifielcoolio A front wheel drive only bike would be a death trap. It would have no traction and it would slide out from under you every time you tried to turn!
he said the wheels spin at the same rate... are they accounting for the smaller size tire on the front? also, what if this thin fails? will it lock the front wheel or let it spin without the motor? personally, i'd be pretty hesitant to trust riding this thing at speed...
With a sophisticated electronic traction control system this could be the way forward. For road use. And maby who knows for what other purposes. Thanx
only on offroad this makes sense, however the front wheel in this case must turn slightly faster for transfering torque, possibly with a torque control system to avoid wheel spin, if the pump and the hub are the same and the system is 99% efficent there is no traction on the front
@samy699, whenever the rear wheel is slipping, the power is transferred up front. Since there is always slippage due to cornering, surface differences, etc, the front wheel is always getting at least approx. 5% power, and during hard acceleration hard cornering or hard downshifting, this value will increase.
hydraulic fluid turns a hub containing seven rods with one spherical end. as the hub spins these rods, a gear on the hub center-line is engaged between these rods, allowing it to have power transmitted. the spherical ends allow for some play in the system, for cornering loads and the like.
I have tested the yamaha wr250f 2wd and that works really great, almost like driving a 4wd car. But i really can't see the point of a 2wd road bike...
How about showing some take offs in the water, and when Im on the track I find it hard to keep my front tire on the track, and I use every part of my tire! This test shows that is "CAN" work. I would not waste a penny on this usless contraption!
Sounds good under the "right" conditions. But unfortunately, I have never ridden in those conditions!!!!! You have to think about those cold mornings, and for the track, well you can not keep a track totally clean! I can see you losing your front end under power!!! But it would stop the tanl slappers when putting a long wheelie down!!
I spend so much time on one wheel,I feel this could be wasted on me.Don't Mess around with the R1,it's a awesome piece of kit, this is getting dangerously close to taming and restricting bikes, they are naughty, and fun,and should remain that way.Developers ought to spend their time finding Stealth Bomber invisable paint technology,to avoid speed Cameras, that's what real world riders need.
@BikerTrashWolf Most ppl whose 1st language is English seldom respect it's complexities when spoken by anyone who it's a second or third form of communication. I know only 1 language (English), and I desecrate it every time I communicate it via type/txt or verbal. Respect to anyone who can speck more than 1 language ... good or bad!
This system has been around for awhile. Never seen it on a street bike, but off road bikes have been fitted with it. It may have some advantage for enduro type riding off road in gnarly terrain.
I need my front tyre to grip and talk to me on track, I definately don't want it to extract power from my rear tyre: I need that one to push me out of the corners, not a front that pulls me out! What were they thinking???
thats not gunna do shit, a little motor powerd by hydraulic preassure? so for instance if you took the chain off and tried to ride it just front wheel drive it would still have decent acceleration? no its just a waste of money and time and it means there is now 10 times more chance of your beloved r1 failing! jut admit its possible but pointless!
If the drive to the front wheel is powered by a takeoff from the countershaft, isn't the front wheel still pulling if you're coasting with the clutch pulled in? Seems to me that would be disconcerting coming off a fast straight braking for a turn.
Just a question, doesn't this make the bike's trajectory wider while cornering? I know that cars and bikes aren't much alike, but cars with AWD tend to make the trajectory wider... But while the cornering of the bike is based in inclination and the "V" of the tires, the cornering of the cars is based on the direction of the front wheels! So the phisics applied are different! I really don't know much about 2wd on bikes! XP
If there's 100 cm2 road contact of two tyres to put force to the track before slipping, that allows more force than if there is only 60 cm2 of one tyre, SO more acceleration! Downside must be unsprung weight though. Nice vid, thanks.

he said the wheels spin at the same rate... are they accounting for the smaller size tire on the front? also, what if this thin fails? will it lock the front wheel or let it spin without the motor? personally, i'd be pretty hesitant to trust riding this thing at speed...
666jet 1 year ago
With a sophisticated electronic traction control system this could be the way forward. For road use. And maby who knows for what other purposes. Thanx
ColinBurnside 1 year ago
You stick two more wheels on that thing and it'll go and corner like a bastard.

@schlusselmensch hahahaha damn. spat coffee everywhere
greebo954 1 year ago
only on offroad this makes sense, however the front wheel in this case must turn slightly faster for transfering torque, possibly with a torque control system to avoid wheel spin, if the pump and the hub are the same and the system is 99% efficent there is no traction on the front
Terminchiator 1 year ago
@samy699, whenever the rear wheel is slipping, the power is transferred up front. Since there is always slippage due to cornering, surface differences, etc, the front wheel is always getting at least approx. 5% power, and during hard acceleration hard cornering or hard downshifting, this value will increase.

I'm confused... its the hydraulic fluid turning the front wheel ? someone explain please!

@samy699
hydraulic fluid turns a hub containing seven rods with one spherical end. as the hub spins these rods, a gear on the hub center-line is engaged between these rods, allowing it to have power transmitted. the spherical ends allow for some play in the system, for cornering loads and the like.
zeropointtap 1 year ago
@zeropointtap
does the front tire spin as fast as the back then ? like if it were proped up.

Additionally I can't wait to see this implemented on a tip top MotoGP bike and flogged to hell by one of the best... then their remarks.

How about showing some take offs in the water, and when Im on the track I find it hard to keep my front tire on the track, and I use every part of my tire! This test shows that is "CAN" work. I would not waste a penny on this usless contraption!
jasonbusuttil1 1 year ago
Sounds good under the "right" conditions. But unfortunately, I have never ridden in those conditions!!!!! You have to think about those cold mornings, and for the track, well you can not keep a track totally clean! I can see you losing your front end under power!!! But it would stop the tanl slappers when putting a long wheelie down!!
jasonbusuttil1 1 year ago
This is what people do when they get bored, save your time and money and leave the bike rear wheel drive and go ride it

ive always wondered how i myself would go about making a two wheel drive bike, not that its very practical haha

What were they thinking???
allesinmetaal 1 year ago
thats not gunna do shit, a little motor powerd by hydraulic preassure? so for instance if you took the chain off and tried to ride it just front wheel drive it would still have decent acceleration? no its just a waste of money and time and it means there is now 10 times more chance of your beloved r1 failing! jut admit its possible but pointless!

So wht happens if you were to lock up one of the wheels while breaking?

If the drive to the front wheel is powered by a takeoff from the countershaft, isn't the front wheel still pulling if you're coasting with the clutch pulled in? Seems to me that would be disconcerting coming off a fast straight braking for a turn.
XH1927 1 year ago
Just a question, doesn't this make the bike's trajectory wider while cornering? I know that cars and bikes aren't much alike, but cars with AWD tend to make the trajectory wider... But while the cornering of the bike is based in inclination and the "V" of the tires, the cornering of the cars is based on the direction of the front wheels! So the phisics applied are different! I really don't know much about 2wd on bikes! XP
