I agree with both of you, except for the strength issue, I believe that even a beginner, or especially a beginner should not rely on strength to play barres.
Position is everything. No squeezing -- no pain required, just patience.
The 2 favorite men in my life! Love you both! I have my barre chords down but it's so great that the 2 of you got together to do a vid. Marty is such cool cat, Griff your the handsome guitar player! I just love both of your lessons. You guys have helped me so much. I'm so grateful. BTW Griff I just ordered your intermediate blues course and am looking forward to learning even more.
Is there a reason for playing barre chords as apposed to playing open chords, is it a technical thing or is it just something better on the ear i.e playing the c chord open as apposed to playing it in the third fret or the eigth fret position
I forgot the one good tip i have about barre chords - practice releasing your fingers
to rest your chording hand will help conserve energy when fingering the barre chords. If you keep trying to press harder and harder it will make things worse. And releasing the fingering is also key to getting great muting effects in rythmn playing.

This is a great example of synergy! The two of you together are really amazing. It does illustrate that the learning curve is different for different people. Being female
adds another perspective to barre chords. It's actually easier for me to do full barre chords than it is to do a shuffle rhythm on just the bass notes. That stretch really hurts sometimes. I would love to hear the two of you discuss that - "Born to be Wild" , or Takin Care of Business - those kinds of rhythms.
I just recently started trying to play the guitar. I have been watchin Marty for about 3 months or more now, and his style of teaching works so well for me. I'm glad I stumbled across your videos as well for a wider scope of learning. I found it quite ironic that you 2 know each other. I enjoy the both of you guys style of teaching. Keep the lessons coming cause I'm learning alot form the both of you.
For the longest time I would play power chords instead of barre chords because I had problems barring at first like everyone else, then i realized after I started soloing a bit that my hand does move in the way it needs to and I just needed to practice longer on my chord changes. Although this video is great And like you said in the begining, I'm subscribed to you and marty
Great teaching method guys. Being firstly a rhythm guitarist I don't have any trouble with any barre chords, but I do play the "B" shape slightly differently; that is I use the last 3 fingers to cover the 3rd, 4th. and 5th strings independently. A great lesson and like anything I t takes practie and a lot of perseverance. Oh and FIRECRACKER392 you wouldn't know what "out of tune" was if it bit you in the ass! Get real.
First off, thanks fellahs! What a nice surprise, although I figured you knew each other due to your business ventures. (It is a small world when you run in circles, huh?) Good luck with all that to the both of you. I actually bought "both" of your Blues DVD lessons because, although you are similar, you have different approaches and "pointers". Griff, the YouTube 4 note solo I love, and Marty the open tuning Rolling Stones thingy was too cool. Your help got me hooked. My fingertips hurt a lot
Hey guys , Kwick sticks here drummer for forty one years, Playing guitar about six months. & believe it or not you guys are my teachers, I found both of you on line & your both great teachers , Ive come along ways with you guys guideing me , I practice all the time & love the challange the both of you give to your students Happy New Years to the both of you & your Family's PEACE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
after 1 year of playing electric guitar full of punk rock I've got an acoustic and those barre chords are anoying I get them exept the G string it always mutes when I put all my fingers right for the chords
Gr8 lesson gents!Griff's my hero/marty;i appreciate all ur free stuff,i can fst4wrd thru most of ur yammerin,but i appreciate the way u can seem2relate2 a beginner/wannabe guitarist(holder more than a player) like me...k,so it's key2know my E & A strings!mucho gracius seniors.
Great to see the two methods of teaching. I've been "sort of" playing the guitar for 40+ years, all self taught, and I'm just now learning the Blues. Very much appreciate what you guys have put out there.
Just watched your video about playing with your buddy and how you should be playing different things at the same time. Do you have any suggestions of songs that would be a good place to start with the concept you introduced in that video?
Glad to see you too working together, this is eactly what I'm working on now. Trying to play Life by the Drop by Stevie, just one barre (as I'm sure you two know) but this was helpful. And I must agree with another poster, all you guys need now is Justin from the UK. Gotta go practice now for 13.6 minutes now ; )
You guys are great. Hope you'll do a video on hammer-ons and pull-offs - I especially have trouble with the pull-offs. Also hope you're going to hit vibrato - not sure if I'm doing it wrong, or just need more practice.
I live in the south...wish I could move to the "left" coast, and hook up with you guys. About 95% of what I've learn about playing guitar these past 9 months (since Jan. 2010) has been from the two of you. The other 5% was/is from another on-line "instructor" whose name I will not mention...but his initials are Justin Sandercoe. LOL Thanks guys a gazillion. I'm 65, and decided to take up guitar to ward off "ol' timers disease" etc. :D)
Hey guys!!,great video!!, glad you two met up!, I spend most of my time working with the videos you make. I have purchased your videos too. The best part about your instruction is that you show something to learn, then a progression to use it in. I think a very important part also, is when you use a backing track with the lesson. I always look forward to emails from Both of you!!!........Thanks!!
two of the best teachers on the net. bottom line is you gotta practice bar chords and not avoid what ur not "good" at...when that is exactly wat u SHOULD practice. good song to practice a few bar chords to is 'across the universe' by The Beatles. has Bm,F#m,Gm (bar chords)
Thanks for the lesson griff and marty! I've been struggling with barre chords and I've been avoiding them like the plague! LOL!!! I'm going to give Marty's technique a go at it and make sure I practice my barre chords at the end of my practice session. Great video and thanks again!
Great to see you both working together. I'm still wading through your materiail Griff (brilliant stuff) but rellish all the emails and tips post purchasing your material.
Two good guys with a LOT of super guitar knowledge...unfortunately this video does not convey much of it... WAY TOO much talking and VERY little educational content.
misshamilton40 - I disagree with the "not educational" comment. I mean, I learned that my fingers bend back just about as far as Griff's and Marty showed us the finer points of grasping for a good sounding bar chord. I have a ton of both these guys' tuition stuff. Consider ourselves lucky to be getting this for "free". They're the best instructors out there by far. Next lesson might cost you the price of their NEW DVD - "together". Enjoy while you can!!
The easiest way to keep from having to twist your elbow, just raise the neck of the guitar. Having the guitar across the chest from hip to shoulder is the easiest way to play without getting tired. You guys should work together...great chemistry.
this is just what I needed guys. learning Pink Floyd's " Comfortably Numb" and the dreaded B minor is 1 of the chords throughout the verse and chorus. thnx
It was a good lesson. Although, I think Marty understands people and how it can be a challenge. I have learned my barre chords and yes it was a challenge at times. Griff, did it take you just a few minutes to learn them??? Just wondering.
@12tonto13 - Of course not, I struggled like everyone else. Actually, most things I've learned over the years took me longer than other people I knew. I always seemed to have to practice a little more and it took a little bit longer. But I loved playing guitar and didn't care... I just kept at it. But I definitely was not any kind of prodigy if that's what you mean.
it's great you guys have hooked up together, you are two of the best tutors out there, please keep posting videos please, you seem to have a great time doing it as well, thank you.
well done , guys you inspired me once again to continue on with learning, i bought your learning dvd's 1 year ago griff and i am still progressing but find it hard practising by myself all the time, i do a bit each day, you are a great team, you should bring out a dvd together?

it didn't tell me a great geal about barre chords but - hey - there's not a lot to tell.
Surely Griff's 'apply yourself' is the key. Practice the damned things.
