Rich Mullins on his journey home to the Catholic Church, wrote this based on the ancient Apostles' Creed one of the first Creeds of the Catholic Church.
"Where the Bishop is there the people shall gather, just as where Christ is you will find the Catholic Church." St. Ignatius of Antioch on his way to martyrdom in Rome in 107 AD.
@JmpNC1 Don't know; I haven't heard of one. Would be interesting, though, to see how mainstream CCM would interpret (Read: Skew and distort) the life and ways of Mullins.
love it. rich has amazing catchy songs on youtube. Same with a new band Red Letter Hymnal. They both have awesome stuff on youtube and itunes for that matter
I have always loved this man ...but I also respect the fact that he must of been called to a single life of ministry for winning souls and healing through his music ..If I was to ever of had the chance to be his wifee ....I bet he would of been one great husband !!! cause he loves the Lord so much and this kind of man is hard to find ...
Thank you for taking the time to post this. This is my all time favorite song and video by Richard Mullins. He was so amazing. He died on my sons 17th birthday. So very sad, but I know he is so happy in the presence of our Lord!!!
"dad could make a garden grow out of indiana claaaay, mom could make a gourmet meal out of just corn bread and beans, and they worked to give faith hands and feet and somehow gave it wings"

@mitcheruUSA62 Rich decide not to enter it. He went to a Catholic church but didn't convert. His good friend, James Bryan Smith, wrote about in his book: Rich Mullins An Arrow Pointed to Heaven. Rich took classes to learn it but it was confusing for him. Some of their teaching was hard. He only want to BE GODs .
Rich Mullins, brother in Christ was entering into the Catholic faith before he died. John Michael Talbot, another Christian singer/songwriter, and friend confirmed this.
absolutely love everything rich mullins sang and also what he was all about. eschewing riches and fame, he sold out to God 100% and now he has been rewarded 1,000%! he is ione of a handful people I look forward to seeing in paradise. Imagine the music he sings to Jesus now!
There's a ragamuffin loose on the Streets of Gold! Today, September 19, 2010, marks the 13 year anniversary of the death of Rich Mullins. Your legacy will continue to live on Rich. You were truly an arrow pointing to heaven.
I saw a message referring to Catholic vs. Protestant debate just for your information (because many people don't know this). Catholic, during the time of the creeds (there are three ecumenical Christian creeds) meant "all encompassing or universal. So, when you read "cathoilc" it does not always mean "Holy Roman". The creeds are; Apostle's Creed, Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed. They were all written long before the church permanently spilt in AD 1054.
Rich, playing the piano filled my life with music, but I have you thank for leading me to the hammered dulcimer! It has truly been a joy in my life. See you later.
BenW783a well i will say this softly. pride comes before a fall. you can write to me if you want but my mother and brother are both pastors and i came up in the church. to label your video is fine that don't bother me none but to brag every time that some one complains is just to much get over the ownership thing god would not do this.
@MrDarrell1974 Then I will respond softly: I just ran down the entire 2 year comments history for this video & I'm having trouble finding where I'm "bragging" one way or another. I'm also having trouble seeing where I'm claiming ownership in any way. Due to YT's reorganization of the comments section, several comments are now taken out of context, so maybe it looks like I have nothing better to do than join in on the conversations. By the way, kudos to your mother, brother, and your upbringing.
@MrDarrell1974; to say that your mother and brother are pastors, and to say that you've been brought up in the church is, in all actuality, bragging my friend. Why does that give you some kind of authority to rebuke someone? I think it is very dangerous to say what God may or may not do. God is humble, yes. He doesn't need to have letters of approval from man, though. We should be very careful to judge a man according to an image we imagine God to be.
@MrDarrell1974Boldness and confrontation IS necessary for change, but it is GOD who judges intentions and motives. When we decide to be the Holy Spirit, we take God out of the picture altogether. By what measure do you judge? Is there a commandment that inevitably reveals a fault here?
@MrDarrell1974I have heard many brothers react to pictures of artists on album covers in a way that says "that's not of God." Rich had pictures of himself... and yet gave the majority of his earnings away to charity. We are so quick to judge the surface.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
DISLIKES ... this video USED to have a copy available WITHOUT a SELF-GLORIFYING intro (as you have done) but purely showed raw RICH MULLINS video/music ... pray and think about this, sir!
@emeraldandsapphire That must have been another video you saw, because this video (That's been up for nearly 2 years now) has always had the "Welcome to a BenW783a" *Welcome Message.* Before you judge me and my "Self-Glorifying" *Welcome Message,* perhaps you should pray and think about why you are so angry, sir. I'll send up a prayer for you as well.
how is this post self glorifying? what does that even mean?? whats wrong with taking pride in your work-by putting your name in it, i believe that even God put his name on his work, so that all creation when seeing the world around them is familiar with the one who made them.
-its strange and funny that when believers become angry with one another they say "you better pray!! or Im praying for you!" with a malice, and self righteousness.-as though god would ever side with imperfect
@emeraldandsapphire Why do you care if it shows raw Rich Mullins? Were you baptized in his name or in Christ's name? Whom Rich is singing about anyway. Glory to God alone.
@emeraldandsapphire the other video probably got taken off due to copyright infringement. Be thankful that this video is still up. Also you might think about purchasing an mp3 of this song, if you want the whole raw rich mullens music (not sure if the video is for sale.
DISLIKES may be that this original video did not have ANY advertisements or interruptions ... this one has a small intro that distracts from RICH MULLINS and this Video!!!!!!!!!!!!
@emeraldandsapphire Exactly how tightly wound were you when you wrote this first of *two* scathing comments? My guess would be pretty tight. In the Information bar, I actually thank Sony Music Entertainment & Reunion Records (the copyright holders for this particular RM song) for "realizing the benefits of free advertising via YT, and not asking for this video to be taken down or maimed." (i.e.: Muted audio).
That's why there's a pop-up ad at roughly the 12-second mark with information about downloading a copy of this song on MP3: This is SME and RR's way way of saying, "We'll allow you to keep this video up, but we're going to place ads on the video and page in order to get a return." -- Pretty fair if you ask me.
Rich Mullins is essentially singing the Apostles Creed here; one of the oldest statements of faith in Christian history. If you want to know what Christians believe - this is it.
Rich was in a jeep with mitch mcvicker and both were ejected. They were not 4 wheeling they were driving down the interstate and then a tractor trailer swerved to miss the jeep and ran over rich. He was killed instantly. There were no witnesses. They do not know who was driving. I just felt this needed to be corrected. Mcvicker survived. Bless Rich Mullins./ His music will live on forever and so will he in our hearts!
It's sad... right after this record was released Rich was killed in his Jeep in August and the record came out in July. He was 4 wheelin' and miss the jump, was thrown from the jeep and the jeep l;anded on top of him crushing him. Rich died two days later! His songs will never die. RIP RICH MULLINS MAY YOU SING YOUR PRAISES TO THE LORD IN HEAVEN!
Jesus prayed this for you: "I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me." (John 17:20-21)
Any separation like protestant or catholic makes the church not be as one. Because we are not one church, the world does not believe. The church needs to be one 'so that the world may believe'. Division brings destruction.
Rich was from Indiana and I had the opportunity to see him in concert at Taylor University in Upland, IN and at the birthday celebration for WHME in South Bend, IN. Both times, Rich was so incredible. He came out in ripped up jeans and no shoes or socks and t-shirt. He was the most unassuming Christian performer I have ever seen. He wasn't there to impress the crowd. He was there to worship his Savior in song.
I feel llike I should of been married to this man,,as I love him in a strange way ") nothing sexual just LOVE LOVE LOVE..bet hes walking around barefoot with GOD....
I met him several times through my brother, had dinner with him a couple of times. Great great man of God. And he was totally sold out for God and trying to serve the disadvantaged. I can't wait to hear him sing with I get to heaven. I was truly blessed by his music and his life.
I with you with can't waiting to hear him sing again, I'm working on a song right now that is about Rich and it speaks about him singing in heaven again.
I was only able to go to a concert when I was four, wish I could have met him.....:)
The Hammered Dulcimer is a trapazoidal rectangular instrument. I It has anywhere from 18-60+ stringed notes that are hit with piano like hammers. Its probably the ancetor of the piano. The Mountain Dulcimer is a small often hourglass shapped and is usually played on your lap. It usually has four strings and is played wth a wood slide and plucked. Possibly the ancestor of the lap steel.
I keep coming back to Rich Mullins. I never get tired of his sincerity and passion. A man that truly lived as he believed. I hope some day that I too can live by this conviction. Seems all to often my good deeds are by law and not by love... though I am growing.
So tonight I decided to do a search for "Rich Mullins," and this video is the 3rd one that shows up (Thanks, everybody!). With YT's new "Like/Dislike" buttons, this video is also marked as a "Most Liked" video (Thanks again, guys and gals!), with 131 Likes, and 3 Dislikes.
My main question, though, is why the dislikes? Do the people who hate our faith have such a sorry life that they have nothing better to do than to "Dislike" a dead man's music? I find it all amusing, actually :) Thanks again!
@BenW783a They insult the dead mans music because the are obsessed with God, and in denial, Every ones knows God is alive, Just not everyone excepts it. and the proof is in his followers, and planet earth, Much last the endless vast galaxys, HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD!!!!!
God is God, Christ is the son. No one denomination is perfect, only God himself. Religions will only cause fights, anger, among other trash. The most impotant thing is that we believe in the one who created us and have a personal relationship with him through out savior Christ Jesus. Forget religon, lets get back to the basics, GOD !!!!
I love this man. Wish he was still around today :/ Just recently found out that my mom was his next-door neighbor lol! I am glad he is with our Father. He died living to a cause.
it's a shame really, so much of today's church is so caught up in the minutia of differences in theologoy and who's wrong and who's right. I mean, the church as a whole has the same goal right? So what purpose does infighting serve other than to distract the church from Christ's charge to us. It's a shame really when you think of what the church could accomplish if it just quit bickering with itself and acted like the single entity that it's supposed to be...
@storm1249 We can't act as a single entity if we don't stand on the same sound traching. If different denominations do things together, it's ecumenism, which prepares the way for antichrist. Get together for the sake of effectiveness? Don't include me...
What makes you think that the different denominations working together would make the way for the antichrist? And what makes you think they can't work together unless we all have the exact same teaching? If you notice, the disciples continued to have disagreements even after Jesus left, but He had given all of them a mission, so they worked through their differences and stayed together and worked as a whole.
Have you never thought about this? Antichrist will want to exalt himself over everything that is called a god and the best place for him will be a union of denominations. And they will unite because they don't care one bit about doctrine. They will unite even though they hate each other. Wilkerson hates Hinn and Hinn hates Piper and Piper hates McLaren. And even if you tried to convince me that the apostles had disagreements, I know my Bible better than that. Bye.
The moment we allow fear (of anitchrist or anything really) or animosity of any sort to rule our decisions rather than by the Father's heart and love we no longer can influence a situation
@AsTheDeer The apostles did have disagreements. Read Acts when it was being decided on how to deal with Gentile believers and whether or not they had to follow Jewish law.
And with this Catholic vs. Protestant debate...stop. Just stop. All that matters is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. We ought to be following His example, not arguing about who's right and who's wrong. Protestants take Holy Communion as well. We serve the same God. That's all that should matter.
@crosscountrytc I agree with you in theory, but in my Protestant upbringing I never heard it called "Holy Communion," and there is no comparison between the remembrance of the Lord's Supper in Protestantism and the Eucharistic feast in Catholicism. In this comment I am not taking a position on which is the more complete understanding of what Jesus meant - I'm just saying that there is no equivalence between the two sides on this subject.
@AsTheDeer Bleh...I don't want to debate or anything, but I don't think "sprinkling vs. dunking" is going to keep us from being a "single enitity". The Bible can be interpreted in many ways when it comes to the small stuff...what matters is our hearts. We can be a single entity if our hearts are with God and not in the world.
I believe a dulcimer is plucked, like a harp, and a hammer dulcimer is played by striking the strings with two small hammers or sticks. I think. I'm pretty sure, anyway. That, and some differences in shape and tone. Maybe.
I talked with Rich once, he was interested in the poor and the disadvantaged as well as children. I saw him go out of his way to bring joy to disabled children and he had a true heart of Jesus. He was not perfect but he did not confess a religion. He lived a sold out life for God. He hoped that we could do the same.
Thanks, scooberp... Very nicely put. Kudos to you. And if that's true about Rich Mullins taking interest in the poor, he would have lived with my family had he known about us :)
@scooberp You are listening to him confessing a religion. He might have been an non-denominational Christian, but this song is an ancient confession of Christianity (written about 50 years after the death of the apostles).
When Rich Mullins fell asleep in the Lord he was taking instructions to become a Catholic. And although the word "Catholic" was removed from this rendition it is basically the Apostle's Creed which certainly contains the word "Catholic." It is NOT a denominational thing, because the Catholic Church is NOT a denomination. As St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote on his way to martyrdom in 107 AD; Wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church."
Anyone familar with the Early Church Fathers understands what the Catholic Church is. I did not limit it to the Roman Catholic Church, and I am not a Roman Catholic myself. Those Churches with true Apostolic Succession such as the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Communions are also compoinents of the Catholic Church. They hold the fullness of truth, throughout the world, which is the fuller understanding of the word "Catholic."
@breyman913 There is only 1 Church with "true Apostolic Succession"
From the lips of Jesus himself: "And I tell you, 'You are Peter' and on this rock I will build my Church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." (Mt 16:18)
sjci98, please read Pope John Paul II's "Light of the East" and come to more fully understand the Catholic Church's teaching on "sister Churches." Of course, the Catholic Church of the Apostles, The Apostolic Fathers, Church Fathers and the Seven Great Ecumenical Councils, which wrote the New Testament, compiled the Bible, declared the Creeds and has proclaimed the full Gospel of Jesus Christ for 2000 years!
And we should mention here that toward the end of his life, Rich Mullins was on his way into that Church that claims Apostolic Succession. It came through in some of his songs, but his leaning toward an historically accurate understanding of Christianity comes through most powerfully in this song.
I have heard from friends of Rich that he had reconsidered entering the Roman Catholic Church.
Roman Catholic's are not the only church that claims Apostolic Succession.
The one thing that is common with those churches that claim Apostolic Succession or to have apostles is that none of their supposed apostles are able to heal, raise people from the dead, perform miracles, or any other of the things that "mark an apostle." (2 Corinthians 12:11-13)
The key thing that unites the churches with true Apostolic Succession is the Eucharist. Mainline Protestantism denied the Eucharist and therefore dis-united themselves from the historical church.
Protestantism does not deny the Eucharist, it denies transubstantiation.
The historical church is not the Roman Catholic Church. The historical church is the first century church and the church described in the book of Acts.
Ok, boys and girls, I've been staying back in this discussion (Many interesting viewpoints), but there have been several questionable comments posted as of late, and it's starting to annoy me.
This is one simple song, with one simple message, sung by one simple man for what SHOULD be one simple church.
But most of you have gone and turned it into a denominational struggle, and that just isn't right.
Let's try to keep the comments simple, everybody. I don't want to have to disable commenting.
It was written by the church. Catholic means universal. The church universal. I think to call the Roman Catholic Church the only church would be inaccurate. A number of people from many church traditions have genuinely experienced the reality of Jesus Christ breaking into their lives and giving them new birth into a living hope - the resurrection of Jesus Christ and eternal life with Him, the living God.
The original Apostles creed was written in the 1st or 2nd century, prior to the Emperor of Rome establishing the Roman Catholic Church. The earliest written version of the creed is perhaps the Interrogatory Creed of Hippolytus (ca. A.D. 215).
Thanx for the post..I love this song...It flows with God's blessing, If you believe..!!!As long as you believe and accept Jesus in your heart...don't matter what demoninational you are...We're all family in the body of Christ!!!He's not going to seperate us when we get to heaven by what church we go too...or what we believe...God Bless you for posting this song and channel...

Dude, what's with all this Catholic / Protestant debating? It's not like Catholics are not Christian, and it's not like Protestants don't believe what the Apostle's Creed says. I'm a Baptist and I've looked into Catholicism, and they're every bit as believers in God as we are. There are many rumors about them, like they worship Mary or other gods or whatever. Not true. Like Jesus said, "whoever is not against me is for me". Catholics and Protestants are both under God, so we're family.
protestants very much so believe in the Apostle's creed. I haven't heard of a protestant church that doesn't agree with everything it say. If you're referring to the line about the "catholic church" in the creed, it's a term that only means a "universal" church, not Catholicism.
Yes Catholicism has been stereotyped but what makes them different from protestants is: 1. Most dont believe in accepting Christ like Romans 10:9 says. They are very works based. 2. Catholics dont "worship" Mary and the saints but they pray to them, which is not Biblical because it is putting other Gods before God. It's not like Mary or the saints have any power anyway, so why pray to them. 3. They believe that the priest can forgive. The only power a priest/pastor/etc. has is through the Bible.
On the last point, remember that every true Christian is at least an "unpaid minister" for the Lord, capable of leading others to Christ. Through Christ who is our atonement from sins, we no longer need whether appointed by the Vatican. Their beliefs stem from the duties of the sons of Aaron but that was the Old Testament.
What good is it if someone has faith without works?
"Catholics don't worshp Mary and the saints but they pray to them..."
Pray just means "ask". Don't you ask other people to pray for you?
"They believe that the priest can forgive." No, they don't. The priest is the "mouthpiece", so to speak, for Jesus within the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Can you prove that Catholics don't worship Mary? Or any of their saints? Or the pope? It's very brave to say that protestants are under God too, because they are really under their pastor. They follow men (1 Corinthians ch 1 and 3). No officially registered organisation is with Jesus, because it is a friend of the world.
Well, this idea stems from a misunderstanding of what the church is. Why would an "officially registered organization" be a "friend of the world"? Anyways, Paul did say that God appointed some to be leaders. Now does this mean that we should follow pastors or follow God? God, of course, but pastors ought to be more spiritually mature to lead. Does this make them better than the people they lead and equal to God? Not at all; they are sinners too. To be under a pastor is not like being under God.
This idea stems from misunderstanding what following pastors means. God can help you understand it and see how it applies to today's "churches". It's all in 1 Cor. chapter 1 and 3.
I just read these chapters, but I still don't see what you mean. You can PM me if you wish to be more detailed in your explanation. For now, I don't think these chapters have to do with leadership.
If you are talking about people quarreling over who they follow, Paul is talking about the division caused by trivial loyalties to certain leaders. This kind of "following pastors" is bad. As for leadership, I'm confused as to why you think leadership is wrong. Only some churches today are harmful.
It was enough for me to see the services for Pope John Paul's funeral. Everyone prayed to Mary and repeated a few verses about her like a mantra. Stange, catholics are able to do this a hundred times during a service. And yes, prayer to Mary is a sin because people ask her to tell her Son to listen to us. Jesus is the only mediator between us and the God the Father. It's in the BIble. Also, I don't need to hear a priest say I'm forgiven because I have contact with Christ through his SPIRIT.
No you don't - unless you're no longer catholic. Also, no one can be born into any religion, and you say you were born catholic. You were born a sinner.
Well Put, I do so get tired of all this dumping on Catholics. Trust me, Those of non Christian Faiths do not see any real difference between prostents and catholics, and neither should we!
He actually passed away many years ago. he was killed in a traffic accident. you will love his music he was a great contemporary Christian artist.. and a devoted Christian
Rich Mullins on his journey home to the Catholic Church, wrote this based on the ancient Apostles' Creed one of the first Creeds of the Catholic Church.

BenW783a well i will say this softly. pride comes before a fall. you can write to me if you want but my mother and brother are both pastors and i came up in the church. to label your video is fine that don't bother me none but to brag every time that some one complains is just to much get over the ownership thing god would not do this.
MrDarrell1974 1 year ago
@MrDarrell1974 Then I will respond softly: I just ran down the entire 2 year comments history for this video & I'm having trouble finding where I'm "bragging" one way or another. I'm also having trouble seeing where I'm claiming ownership in any way. Due to YT's reorganization of the comments section, several comments are now taken out of context, so maybe it looks like I have nothing better to do than join in on the conversations. By the way, kudos to your mother, brother, and your upbringing.
BenW783a 1 year ago 2
@MrDarrell1974; to say that your mother and brother are pastors, and to say that you've been brought up in the church is, in all actuality, bragging my friend. Why does that give you some kind of authority to rebuke someone? I think it is very dangerous to say what God may or may not do. God is humble, yes. He doesn't need to have letters of approval from man, though. We should be very careful to judge a man according to an image we imagine God to be.
lorang79 11 months ago
@MrDarrell1974Boldness and confrontation IS necessary for change, but it is GOD who judges intentions and motives. When we decide to be the Holy Spirit, we take God out of the picture altogether. By what measure do you judge? Is there a commandment that inevitably reveals a fault here?
lorang79 11 months ago
@MrDarrell1974I have heard many brothers react to pictures of artists on album covers in a way that says "that's not of God." Rich had pictures of himself... and yet gave the majority of his earnings away to charity. We are so quick to judge the surface.

@BenW783a
how is this post self glorifying? what does that even mean?? whats wrong with taking pride in your work-by putting your name in it, i believe that even God put his name on his work, so that all creation when seeing the world around them is familiar with the one who made them.
-its strange and funny that when believers become angry with one another they say "you better pray!! or Im praying for you!" with a malice, and self righteousness.-as though god would ever side with imperfect

He was killed instantly. There were no witnesses. They do not know who was driving. I just felt this needed to be corrected. Mcvicker survived.

Possibly the ancestor of the lap steel.

it's a shame really, so much of today's church is so caught up in the minutia of differences in theologoy and who's wrong and who's right. I mean, the church as a whole has the same goal right? So what purpose does infighting serve other than to distract the church from Christ's charge to us. It's a shame really when you think of what the church could accomplish if it just quit bickering with itself and acted like the single entity that it's supposed to be...
storm1249 1 year ago
@storm1249 We can't act as a single entity if we don't stand on the same sound traching. If different denominations do things together, it's ecumenism, which prepares the way for antichrist. Get together for the sake of effectiveness? Don't include me...
AsTheDeer 1 year ago
What makes you think that the different denominations working together would make the way for the antichrist? And what makes you think they can't work together unless we all have the exact same teaching? If you notice, the disciples continued to have disagreements even after Jesus left, but He had given all of them a mission, so they worked through their differences and stayed together and worked as a whole.
storm1249 1 year ago
Have you never thought about this? Antichrist will want to exalt himself over everything that is called a god and the best place for him will be a union of denominations. And they will unite because they don't care one bit about doctrine. They will unite even though they hate each other. Wilkerson hates Hinn and Hinn hates Piper and Piper hates McLaren. And even if you tried to convince me that the apostles had disagreements, I know my Bible better than that. Bye.
AsTheDeer 1 year ago
The moment we allow fear (of anitchrist or anything really) or animosity of any sort to rule our decisions rather than by the Father's heart and love we no longer can influence a situation
storm1249 1 year ago
@AsTheDeer The apostles did have disagreements. Read Acts when it was being decided on how to deal with Gentile believers and whether or not they had to follow Jewish law.
And with this Catholic vs. Protestant debate...stop. Just stop. All that matters is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. We ought to be following His example, not arguing about who's right and who's wrong. Protestants take Holy Communion as well. We serve the same God. That's all that should matter.
crosscountrytc 1 year ago
@crosscountrytc I agree with you in theory, but in my Protestant upbringing I never heard it called "Holy Communion," and there is no comparison between the remembrance of the Lord's Supper in Protestantism and the Eucharistic feast in Catholicism. In this comment I am not taking a position on which is the more complete understanding of what Jesus meant - I'm just saying that there is no equivalence between the two sides on this subject.
cllewis1 1 year ago
@AsTheDeer Bleh...I don't want to debate or anything, but I don't think "sprinkling vs. dunking" is going to keep us from being a "single enitity". The Bible can be interpreted in many ways when it comes to the small stuff...what matters is our hearts. We can be a single entity if our hearts are with God and not in the world.

Jartean197 1 year ago
I believe a dulcimer is plucked, like a harp, and a hammer dulcimer is played by striking the strings with two small hammers or sticks. I think. I'm pretty sure, anyway. That, and some differences in shape and tone. Maybe.

For those that were talking about "catholic"
1. broad or wide-ranging in tastes, interests, or the like; having sympathies with all; broad-minded; liberal.
2. universal in extent; involving all; of interest to all.
3. pertaining to the whole Christian body or church.
I am glad Rich Mullins decided to take an important creed in church history and make it into a great song.

As St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote on his way to martyrdom in 107 AD; Wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church."
breyman913 2 years ago
Catholic means 'Universal'. There is only one truly 'catholic church' and it is not limited to the Roman Catholic church.
discolando 2 years ago
Anyone familar with the Early Church Fathers understands what the Catholic Church is. I did not limit it to the Roman Catholic Church, and I am not a Roman Catholic myself. Those Churches with true Apostolic Succession such as the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Communions are also compoinents of the Catholic Church. They hold the fullness of truth, throughout the world, which is the fuller understanding of the word "Catholic."
breyman913 2 years ago
@breyman913 There is only 1 Church with "true Apostolic Succession"
From the lips of Jesus himself: "And I tell you, 'You are Peter' and on this rock I will build my Church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." (Mt 16:18)
sjci98 2 years ago
sjci98, please read Pope John Paul II's "Light of the East" and come to more fully understand the Catholic Church's teaching on "sister Churches." Of course, the Catholic Church of the Apostles, The Apostolic Fathers, Church Fathers and the Seven Great Ecumenical Councils, which wrote the New Testament, compiled the Bible, declared the Creeds and has proclaimed the full Gospel of Jesus Christ for 2000 years!
breyman913 2 years ago
And we should mention here that toward the end of his life, Rich Mullins was on his way into that Church that claims Apostolic Succession. It came through in some of his songs, but his leaning toward an historically accurate understanding of Christianity comes through most powerfully in this song.
cllewis1 1 year ago
I have heard from those who knew him that he had changed his mind on becoming catholic.
evetsegap 1 year ago
I have heard from friends of Rich that he had reconsidered entering the Roman Catholic Church.
Roman Catholic's are not the only church that claims Apostolic Succession.
The one thing that is common with those churches that claim Apostolic Succession or to have apostles is that none of their supposed apostles are able to heal, raise people from the dead, perform miracles, or any other of the things that "mark an apostle." (2 Corinthians 12:11-13)
evetsegap 1 year ago
The key thing that unites the churches with true Apostolic Succession is the Eucharist. Mainline Protestantism denied the Eucharist and therefore dis-united themselves from the historical church.
cllewis1 1 year ago
Protestantism does not deny the Eucharist, it denies transubstantiation.
The historical church is not the Roman Catholic Church. The historical church is the first century church and the church described in the book of Acts.
evetsegap 1 year ago
Ok, boys and girls, I've been staying back in this discussion (Many interesting viewpoints), but there have been several questionable comments posted as of late, and it's starting to annoy me.
This is one simple song, with one simple message, sung by one simple man for what SHOULD be one simple church.
But most of you have gone and turned it into a denominational struggle, and that just isn't right.
Let's try to keep the comments simple, everybody. I don't want to have to disable commenting.

Bottomline---the creed is CATHOLIC. It was written BY Catholics FOR Catholics. Christ's very own Church...period.
xxFairestxx 2 years ago
It was written by the church. Catholic means universal. The church universal. I think to call the Roman Catholic Church the only church would be inaccurate. A number of people from many church traditions have genuinely experienced the reality of Jesus Christ breaking into their lives and giving them new birth into a living hope - the resurrection of Jesus Christ and eternal life with Him, the living God.
plantsrus 2 years ago
But when the Apostle's Creed was written there was only the Catholic Church...
cllewis1 1 year ago
The original Apostles creed was written in the 1st or 2nd century, prior to the Emperor of Rome establishing the Roman Catholic Church. The earliest written version of the creed is perhaps the Interrogatory Creed of Hippolytus (ca. A.D. 215).

Catholics and Protestants are both under God, so we're family.
kguy1988 2 years ago 3
protestants very much so believe in the Apostle's creed. I haven't heard of a protestant church that doesn't agree with everything it say. If you're referring to the line about the "catholic church" in the creed, it's a term that only means a "universal" church, not Catholicism.
pyromaniac4eva 2 years ago
Yes, I agree. What I said was, "it's not like Protestants don't believe in the creed", which means, "we do believe in it".
kguy1988 2 years ago
Yes Catholicism has been stereotyped but what makes them different from protestants is: 1. Most dont believe in accepting Christ like Romans 10:9 says. They are very works based. 2. Catholics dont "worship" Mary and the saints but they pray to them, which is not Biblical because it is putting other Gods before God. It's not like Mary or the saints have any power anyway, so why pray to them. 3. They believe that the priest can forgive. The only power a priest/pastor/etc. has is through the Bible.
pyromaniac4eva 2 years ago
On the last point, remember that every true Christian is at least an "unpaid minister" for the Lord, capable of leading others to Christ. Through Christ who is our atonement from sins, we no longer need whether appointed by the Vatican. Their beliefs stem from the duties of the sons of Aaron but that was the Old Testament.
Over9000Wolf 2 years ago
"Most don't belive in accepting Christ..."
Says who? Christ is the center of our Faith.
"They are very works based." So what?
What good is it if someone has faith without works?
"Catholics don't worshp Mary and the saints but they pray to them..."
Pray just means "ask". Don't you ask other people to pray for you?
"They believe that the priest can forgive." No, they don't. The priest is the "mouthpiece", so to speak, for Jesus within the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
toobytube 2 years ago
wish I could give your comment about 6 thumbs up...
cllewis1 1 year ago
So basically you just repeated all the stereotypes...because what you have said isn't based at all on Catholic Church teaching.
cllewis1 1 year ago
Can you prove that Catholics don't worship Mary? Or any of their saints? Or the pope? It's very brave to say that protestants are under God too, because they are really under their pastor. They follow men (1 Corinthians ch 1 and 3). No officially registered organisation is with Jesus, because it is a friend of the world.
AsTheDeer 2 years ago
Well, this idea stems from a misunderstanding of what the church is. Why would an "officially registered organization" be a "friend of the world"? Anyways, Paul did say that God appointed some to be leaders. Now does this mean that we should follow pastors or follow God? God, of course, but pastors ought to be more spiritually mature to lead. Does this make them better than the people they lead and equal to God? Not at all; they are sinners too. To be under a pastor is not like being under God.
kguy1988 2 years ago
This idea stems from misunderstanding what following pastors means. God can help you understand it and see how it applies to today's "churches". It's all in 1 Cor. chapter 1 and 3.
AsTheDeer 2 years ago
I just read these chapters, but I still don't see what you mean. You can PM me if you wish to be more detailed in your explanation. For now, I don't think these chapters have to do with leadership.
If you are talking about people quarreling over who they follow, Paul is talking about the division caused by trivial loyalties to certain leaders. This kind of "following pastors" is bad. As for leadership, I'm confused as to why you think leadership is wrong. Only some churches today are harmful.
kguy1988 2 years ago
CAn you prove that Catholics DO worship Mary? What's your proof?
toobytube 2 years ago
It was enough for me to see the services for Pope John Paul's funeral. Everyone prayed to Mary and repeated a few verses about her like a mantra. Stange, catholics are able to do this a hundred times during a service. And yes, prayer to Mary is a sin because people ask her to tell her Son to listen to us. Jesus is the only mediator between us and the God the Father. It's in the BIble. Also, I don't need to hear a priest say I'm forgiven because I have contact with Christ through his SPIRIT.
AsTheDeer 2 years ago 2
Amen, Amen, and Amen.... "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." I Timothy 2:5.
