I've seen similar Lysenko-like treatment of other education programs. When I entered education, traditional math instruction had been tossed out of ed school. The only way to get published was to do research and reach conclusions that supported constructivist (see new math) math programs. I you supported traditional methods of math instruction, you couldn't get published and you'd never get tenure.
Phonics advocates were blocked from publishing studies and data for years. When I say blocked, I mean completely shut out. Advocates for the Whole Language method had complete control of the journals and college reading instruction programs. The Whole Language system was a disaster, and rather than debate the merits of the teaching method they advocated they would instead attack and try to destroy those who sought more traditional methods of teaching reading.

I've seen similar Lysenko-like treatment of other education programs. When I entered education, traditional math instruction had been tossed out of ed school. The only way to get published was to do research and reach conclusions that supported constructivist (see new math) math programs. I you supported traditional methods of math instruction, you couldn't get published and you'd never get tenure.

Phonics advocates were blocked from publishing studies and data for years. When I say blocked, I mean completely shut out. Advocates for the Whole Language method had complete control of the journals and college reading instruction programs. The Whole Language system was a disaster, and rather than debate the merits of the teaching method they advocated they would instead attack and try to destroy those who sought more traditional methods of teaching reading.

I would also like to point you towards Ian Plimer, probably the most authoratiative geologist in Australia.
Plimer, a vocal critic of creationism, used to be a hero to progressizes for his willingness to debate any creationist anywhere, anytime. Hardly a conservative, Plimer now argues that Global Warming is a new religion.
I would reccomend you read Plimer's book Heaven and Earth, as Plimer clearly shows that nothing remarkable is occuring in the climate today.

When I was finishing my masters degree I got to spend some time with a professor who was a physicist , engineer and atmospheric scientist.
This atmospheric scientist was so offended by how Mr. Gore has twisted and misrepresented the science that he refused to even say the words "Al Gore."
He would only refer to the former VP as "Manbearpig."
Two of my best buddies are meteorologists, who don't know each other, and niether of them believes humans are responsible for global warming.

I could easily provide you with links to my professor who refused to even say Al Gore's name. But I won't. When I asked why he didn't publish any articles opposing anthropogenic global warming, he made it clear that the political climate was too hostile to global warming skeptics.
My professor is a young guy doing cutting edge research on cloud formation. He and his wife are both academics. The last thing he needs is to make himself a target of global warming fasicsts.
