That almost happened to me while I was driving. My focus was immediately directed toward the scaffolding pipes that were properly contained on the lorry. I was gaining fast up a hill when I just caught sight of a pole that was extended beyond the loading surface. I braked just in time. A fraction of a second later or had the truck braked before I did that pole would have smashed through my windscreen and pierced my skull. So yes be very careful when following behind builder's trucks.

Chances are the truck didn't have the bright rag tied at the end of the logest pipe otherwise it'd be hard to judge the distance at night I think.
