  • Got a little choked up watching Ali. A beautiful moment.

  • Ali bumaye!

  • Watching Ali hold up the torch gave me chills. WOW! This man is a superhero.

  • This brings me to tears.

  • stepped up to the plate like a true hero , finished the job like he finished Sonny Liston.... one handed!

  • A MAGIC MOMENT 16YRS AGO. HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY TO THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. LUDIE WROTE THIS LITTLE DITTY JUST FOR MY BROTHER MUHAMMAD

  • What a moment, when the crowd realizes it's Ali and just explodes, and Enberg says 'OH MY!' I've got chills.

  • What a moment to see Ali light the cauldron. Seeing moments like this are truly great. It makes me wonder who will light it for London 2012.

  • i always love seeing who the final torch bearer is, especially when they have an olympian do it as theyve done since 1992 in barcelona, sometimes they have children or someone of athleticism do it (not Olympian)

  • He lived his first 40 years of life exactly the way he wanted to. Very few people can say that. He accomplished all of his dreams and said everything he wanted to say.

    That's why he doesn't give a f**k about Parkinson's syndrome.

  • even though I know its coming I still get a chill when you can hear the crowd recognize and show unrestrained love for Muhammad.

    just brilliant

  • I thought that was Bob Kelso from scrubs carrying the flame at the beginning...

  • @MrSimplysaunders As funny as that was (that actually was funny), no, it was Al Oerter

  • i get chills whenever i watch this video

  • No country could ever top Muhammed Ali as the one who lights the Olympic flame. If that's not enough, next Olympics in America, we'll get Michael Phelps to light the flame.

  • Man is must be freezing out they're

  • @iamsupercan shut the hell up jack ass, he has parckinsons, my fucking uncle has it, its not fun to deal with, lets see u get it and have to deal with ur whole body shacking and not having control of it, fuck u and the horse u fucking rode in on

  • i envy all those ...... who where there to witness this phenomenon ( the great ALi)

  • @sidmiestro i live in ATL but i was borne the year after :(

  • Ali is not the greatest. Joe Frazier is RIP smokin joe

  • @GayWilliamJohnsen

they are all great!!! thats why the world knows them.........

  • That moment when Ali is holding the torch as the crowd realizes who hand it is in and then he raises it to a roaring stadium is one of the greatest and most most events in sports history. It gets to me everytime.

  • I was 18 years old when i saw this Live! the greatest thing I have seen in my life at the time. Having Ali light the Cauldron was the best ever!

  • Is it a "lol" that my dad was a security guard of this event when he was in the National Guard and I lived in Indiana, and now I'm currently living in Atlanta??

  • 15 years ago I was crying like a bitch and just now I did it again. For me this was the most emotional moment in any sports event ever.

  • is it or is to tom tucker one of the presenters

  • @tnylry No, it is Dick Enberg and Bob Costas.

  • is it or is to tucker one of the presenters

  • ONE WORD EPIC!

  • Terrible opening torch ceremony, Ali saved the day...the greatest.

  • Worst Olympics.

  • ALI!!!

  • I remember this a little bit! My dad was work security for them and I was all of 2 years old, forcing myself to stay awake because I swore I was going to be able to see my daddy on tv.

  • Who does this version of ode to joy?!!!

  • still the greatest

  • I was there!!

  • I remember staying up and watching this as a five year-old.

  • He can drown a glass of water, and kill a dead tree!

  • not the best lighting sory:( You could do so much better...

  • @nacht98 your kidding right , if not your a retard go watch his career ! fool ..

  • I liked this

  • SHAQ is hilarious at 529 lol

  • This brought me to tears. The combination of the ingenious ode to joy, with an event that so precisely fits it's message of universal brotherhood is incredibly beautiful!

  • Probably the best opening ceremony ever.

  • my god, no offense to m. ali, but this lighting is horrible

  • 5:28 its Shaq

  • Notice that the music was paused as the final sop was lit that would be cranked up to the torch to light it. The final measures of the Ode to Joy were not played until then.

  • Still gives me goosebumps. What a beautiful human being. Still and always will be the greatest. Parkinsons can't even stop him.

  • even parkisons diseas cannot stop this man , he is truley the greatest ali <3

  • @liberalguy513 I guess they just typed "greatest boxer in history" into google, and his name popped up. Brush your teeth.

  • The greatest!

  • upsetting to see him in the state he's in. great man.

  • chills

  • chills

  • The Greatest.

  • @liberalguy513 He's got Parkinson's Disease, a disease of the nerves! That's Muhammad Ali!

  • i cry

  • the granpa feels like : "is it close yet, Im dying running guyz"

  • worst olympic games in history

  • @geostasinop Explain? Muhammad ali lighting the torch and Evander Holyfield,Shaquille O'Neal?

  • @TheGeordie4life dont mention on the persons who were involved to the ceremony i mean the whole presentation of the ceremony, the stadiums and other things were ..very disapointing..

and if you see the 1988 1992 2000 2004 2008. these was the worst ever

  • Ali is one of those people that just commands respect. Even if you dont know him if he steps in the same room with you. You will be quiet out of respect

  • Parkinson can't kill the spirit. It can't hinder the fact that he still makes medicine sick...

  • "but look who gets it next"

    "the greatest"

not this time, or that time. but of all time

  • They picked a perfect piece of music for this. The Ode to Joy. All about brotherhood and your fellow man. That's what the Olympics is.

  • Sacando lo grave de esta enfermedad, parece que así le quedo las manos despues de nokear 57 VECES y ser el mejor boxeador de la historia.

  • HE WAS THE MOST COURAGEOUS BOXER THAT EVER LIVED. BUT THIS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT.

  • fuck Parkinson

  • @ibr248 Agreed, My father in law has Parkinson, I've watched him go from a strong willed, well balanced man, to a very frail, hard to understand man.

It's sad, but it's part of life.

  • Now you can have a opening ceremony with a bunch of lights, fireworks, dancing and whatever but those things are only ah inspiring for the moment. But when you get someone like Muhammad Ali who means so much to not only a nation but to the whole world who is riddled with Parkinson's to light the torch of the greatest event in the whole world. Then you got something that will forever be remembered like the pyramids of Giza.

  • The ovation he gets when he holds up the torch still gives me goosebumps.

  • I love how people are saying 'oh this ceremony is shit compared to (insert city).'

Thats not the point. Do you see how important this was? Muhammad Ali, The Greatest, The Heavyweight Champion of the World, was the one to carry the torch last. Even with his Parkinson's. If you ask me, I don't care how spectacular the lighting was. The reason this is the greatest olympic lighting, is because it has The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, lighting it (to an extent)

  • absolutely beautiful, probly my most favorite cauldron ceremony aside from the 2008 olympics

  • The team responsible for the ceremony contacted him before finalising the event and asked him if he would be willing to take on the final role.

Their concern was for him and his dignity, they didn't want to expose him to the danger of dropping the torch as a result of his Parkinson's.

He insisted on taking on the role and repaid them their trust, bu doing it one-handed.

He is not called "the greatest" because it's simply a catchy name.

    NAMASTE!

    Dave

  • What a bad way to send the fire up to the cauldron, Barcelona's was much more innovative.

  • "I would say its probably close between Nelson Mandella and Muhammad Ali as to who is the most loved man on the planet."

Have you ever heard about Pele, the most known man on Earth?

  • @caravaggio31 most people don't know who Pele is as opposed to Ali... especially Americans

  • @ERAUPRCWA Most people in US only and maybe. Pele is the knowest man alive in the world.

  • @caravaggio31

Pele? Michael Jackson is the most known man in the world its in the World Record books. Anyway I came to watch this video to enjoy Ali who is without a doubt the greatest sportsman who ever lived! Btw I love football but hardly anyone cares about Pele more than any other excellent player like George Best, Maradona, Ronaldhino, Zidane etc. Football is a team sport!

  • @squirtstarz I guarantee you that any of the last 3 Presidents are more well known than the Pedo.....

  • Comment removed

  • @squirtstarz great grammar....

  • @squirtstarz you are such a retard spelling like that

  • this is shit compared to beijing

  • The GOAT!!!!! The dignity and class of him even with that disease just made the whole damn stadium light up! The President even teared up. I just cried like a baby and don't feel bad about it either!

  • MUHHAMED ALI is a Big Legent Box KIN OF BOKS

  • Damn, Joe Frazier fucked him up real bad.

  • @Wildzide00 It wasn't joe frazier, he was born with Parkinsons. And you are a Fucking piece of shit.

  • @truthfulmind Learn the facts asshole, his personal doctor said that after the last fight with Frazier he started to present signs of parkinsons, its a neurologic disease it can be triggered by a head injury. Now go eat a dick fucking idiot.

  • @Wildzide00 You learn the facts internet tough guy, PARKINSONS IS A PROGRESSIVE DISEASE, you are BORN with the gene. Asshole. A head injury would only make it worse. Fuck Face.

  • @truthfulmind Wow you are dumber than i though, its progresive when the disease is triggered a person can live with parkinson his entire life and not know it, now after the last match with Frazier the symptoms started thats according to his PERSONAL doctor the man that spended the most time with him. Your mom must have dropped you on your head when you were a baby cuz your just so fucking dumb.

  • Muhammad ali is the greatest

  • I was born when that happend

  • I was just two and a half miles to the east watching this on Channel 11. When the fireworks went off, it was surreal- just seeing those pyrotechnics on TV, then turning my head to see them detonated over Olympic Stadium (now Turner Field) and Fulton County Stadium (which was at the time next door to Olympic Stadium). When Ali took the cauldron, though, there was not a dry eye at the bar I was at. Something that I still relish to this day.

  • ALI BUMAYE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • costas and enberg...great duo.

  • this is probably the closest I will ever come to truth and beauty in my lifetime.

  • chicago shouldve got 2016 forget about rio

  • @williambynum07 Don't be silly, Chicago got knocked out the first round for good reason, people don't want the expense of another Summer Olympics in the US it would seem, even if there is all that talk of it being mostly funded privately.

Rio is drawing from the success of the 2007 Pan American Games, it's in a continent which has yet to host it, and if it were to go back to the Americas, who would you choose? Exotic, fresh Rio or already well known, bland Chicago?

  • @LordDavid04 look here jerk off im from chicago and this is one of the greatest cities in the world. we need some changes done around here and if it wouldve taken the olympics to clean this city up then fine. im a big fan of the olympics and i think it wouldve been great for my city and my country to host the 2016 games. so when u disrespect chicago u disrespect me and the city i was born and raised in u dont know chicago bro.

  • @williambynum07 I wasn't disrespecting your home town, I was merely saying that most didn't want the whole "circuses" concept and would have rather had the "bread" instead. Sure an Olympics would clean up the city, but overall, based on Chicago's bid plan, things could have been better. They proposed a temporary main Olympic Stadium, which although praised as a solution for cities that don't need large stadiums post Olympics, was criticized for little to no legacy venue (in smaller size).

  • @williambynum07 Chicago, much like NYC's bid for 2012 doesn't need an Olympics to boost it's world status. It's already a well known and loved city, it doesn't need an Olympics for that. If it takes an Olympics costing billions of dollars to clean up a city, I'm sure it can be done for less without it.

Chicago can host in time, but Rio really deserved 2016 and got it.

  • what happens if the fire goes out?

  • @Santos3058

They use the official backup flame, used stored in the miner's lantern. They will immediately or close to remove any unofficial re-lit flame like they did in 1976 Montreal, Summer Olympics.

  • Take that Joe Frazier, just remember it was Frazier who said " I would have pushed him in the flame" Ali vs Frazier IV continues !!

  • just like Barcelona 82 :S

  • @amalavasi You must mean Barcelona 1992's archer flame. No it's not the same, this wasn't that smooth decent up a mere string, it was a sloppy decent, even if the cauldron lighter was the greatest.

Simply put, it was great in it's choice of cauldron lighter, poor in execution of the flame.

  • poor ali

  • 感動しました!!

  • Derek Redmond should light the flame in 2012.

  • Greatest opening ceremony moment in Olympic history. I cried my eyes out.

  • Imagine the flame went out

    That would be pretty funny.

  • @EXSPR3SSURS3LF

    that would be SAD

  • Comment removed

  • dat stadium looks pure shit , yet another thing stupid americans get wrong ,fucken egits dat yis

  • The Greatest Of All-Time

    True Legend

  • I love you Bob Costas. ^_^

  • brought tears to my eyes!

  • I was there when I was 5!!

  • A ceremony like that makes me cry a neverending cry

  • Ali lighting the olympic torch, was a fantastic display of how far america has come. 36 years before this, ali won a gold medal for america. Only to return back to the intolerances which has left a scar on american social history, and led to him throwing his medal in the ohio river.

  • Goosebumps each time...... No one better to light the torch

  • Who else better to light the torch? No one holds a flame to you Ali, we will always love you!

  • The Greatest Of All TIme

  • I would say its probably close between Nelson Mandella and Muhammad Ali as to who is the most loved man on the planet.

  • @Lennon4life1968 Bob Marley man!

  • @Lennon4life1968 It's not even close, it's ALI all the way. sj

  • @Lennon4life1968 Yeah, that's true. Muhammad Ali and Nelson Mandela are both speakers of truth, and when you speak of the truth, it's hard to be argued against... They speak of love, peace and their actions have presented to us their great courage in standing up for what they believe in.

  • @Lennon4life1968 Remember: Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali was both HATED once in the West, but LOVED by the whole world later. They both faught for their right's, Ali with his toungue and fist, Mandela with road side bombs (ANC), and power of his presence.

They both got prison sentance and labled as criminals by their own.

One of them is a Christian, other a Muslim, and they both refuse to turn the other cheek when their people, their life and their childrens future was at stake!

  • @AbuAmanah Muhammad aali is indeed a great but unfortunately he allied himself with nasty muslim groups, changed his name and came out with a few racist remarks in the past. Islam is a war religion.

  • Magic! I would have liked to be instead of holyfield..It was grandiose these Olympic Games in Atlanta.

  • Greatest moment in olympic history

  • We love Ali. He's real the GREATEST at the time.

  • brings tears to my eyes everytime

  • great´s moments

  • "And look who gets it next. The greatest!" Tear up every time I see this.

  • I cried 16 years ago when I first saw this, I cried again watching it for the first time sice that day. Truly "the greatest" boxer ever and I can't forget "the prettiest" long live Muhammad Ali.

  • ali holyfield

  • Bill Clinton said that he was in tears the moment he saw Ali on screen.

  • Year 1996, Muhammad Ali was honored to light the couldron...year 2000 all Muslims are terrorist...heh...

  • Just imagine what he saw in front of him, when he stood there with the Olympic Flame. Unbelievable. One of the greatest sports moments.

  • UNBELIVABLE and really emotional moment! This man is the greatest Boxer ever lived, He deserces all respect all love and all good in his life! He fought hard and long and for that we all Love hiM!

  • The fireball went all HADOKEN on that cauldron

  • ALI IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIMES

  • I don't know why, but this clip always makes me start to tear up, usually when the flame is passed to Holyfield, and I'll have tears pouring by the time Ali lights the cauldron!

  • is that a Mc Donald's fries Cauldron? lol

  • I love the footage, but the douchebag commentary can take a hike and commit hara-kiri...

Muhammad Ali is still the greatest of all time, but I can't watch this clip because it sucks ass because the commentary is gay as fuck and lame as all hell.

Fuck you national television. You shit on people I love.

  • @amoibe bob costas talked about how respected he still is, just that his body doesn't work anymore. i don't think he meant any disrespect. at least i hope not.

  • I love the footage, but the douchebag commentary can take a hike and commit hara-kiri...

  • i cant find anything that is copied for barcelona oc in the whole program. Everything is just so different from each other. Why does some says that atlanta' s oc is the american version of barcelona . There were no cheerleaders from barcelona. come on guys......

  • the first time a Culdron was lite was in Germany during the 1930s olympic games

    (Nazi idea)

  • Ali... still the Greatest!

  • These games were the least successful ever! Boring and no culture except fast food!

  • i was there that evening.........i cant see or even think of this moment without a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye, as Ali walked up to the cauldron and, with his shaking hand holding the torch, lights the olympic flame. THAT was the highlight of my olympic experience, Sorry Shelly!!!!!!

  • Unforgettable Ali. No figure in the history of American sports ever deserved it more.

  • I defy anyone not to cry watching Muhammed Ali's dignity as he lights the cauldron. Truly THE greatest!

  • the immortal

  • Muhammad Ali is not just an american treasure, he is an universal treasure!!!!

  • A real life bobblehead. Nice

  • oh evander holyfield

  • THE CHAMP IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is beautiful

  • lame

  • Muhammad Ali is till floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee!!

  • Muhammad Ali the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Holyfield ran a marathon!

  • i had the pleasure of meeting the greatest in london in 92 when he came to the uk for a charity event for michael watson, i took with me a signed picture of him at the training camp just before the george forman fight to give him as a gift, he looked at it and simply said " aint i pretty" everyone laughed and then he said thanks, i will never forget the day when he sent it back to me at my home and signed it again, a very classy man and a true legend, thanks muhammad for everything

  • @TheSonnyhooper that picture is now in my hallway and i smile everyday one the way out of the house, muhammad ali, translates into, worthy of all praises-most kind, enough said

  • His presense that night spoke louder than he ever could. I dont think there was dry eye in the room when we watched that from my home.

  • As a 20 year old guy, I shouldn't be crying watching something like this, but my god, it gets me. I was 6 during that Olympics, and remember asking my dad "Why is that man shaking?" I don't remember what he told me, but now, knowing exactly what he went through, I'm not sure there's a better embodiment of America's determination.
