The single greatest achievement in Western music. I first heard it in Junior High, when a music teacher played the first two movements for us. An auditorium filled with kids. I was entranced. Judging by a few others who sat still in their chairs after it ended, a few others were, too. The amazing thing is that any 8th graders got it. Let the teens enjoy Justin Bieber; in time, at least some will grow out of it. But it is up to us who love this to make sure it continues to be passed on.
Among the principles emphasized by Bahá’u’lláh are: The oneness of mankind Equality of women and men Independent investigation of truth A world commonwealth of nations Religion must be the cause of unity Non- interference of religion with politics Elimination of the extremes of wealth and poverty A spiritual solution to economic problems Elimination of all kinds of prejudice A universal auxiliary language

@fuhmeregan Might I respectfully suggest that if we are simply "reasoning apes" and the product of random unintelligent evolutionary process, then we have absolutely no moral obligation to preserve the earth.
Nor is there any reason to value emotions and conditions such as love and peace. In a Goddless world they're simply random biological functions having no more importance than the decomposition of a dead fly.
Oh no, there's nothing wrong with scientists. What I'm saying is that if we believe the universe is simply the result of blind chance then we are merely "reasoning apes" and morality becomes whatever we think it should be. In fact, if everything is random chance, how can we even know what right and wrong are? That's more what I mean. I'm sure there are many peaceful scientists :)
well in science no one believes in reason any more. reason is illogical. Science does not reason, science only predicts. You see philosophicaly, a reason has no end, if you answer the question "why" it never ends. But if you had an equation and you can substitute parameters with some numbers then you can predict things which is the goal of science. Its not ugly at all. People will never be unnessasrily immoral. Immorality affect our existence negatively.
The interesting thing with science is that if one goes far enough back, something must be assumed. In other words, whatever our position, we come with to the table with our "presupositions" or things we take for granted. Even though we cannot prove those things we tend to stick to them "religiously" - that is we believe them on faith.
And I agree with you that immorality affects us in a negative way, but if the world is just a product of blind chance, I think we would even have difficulty defining what "negative" is. What's wrong for me could be right for someone else and what is commonly seen as wrong today, could be correct in the further evolved world of tomorrow.
well right and wrong are relative. but you have to follow an educated system and study history and come in to a right conclusion. everything is based on our knowladge and experiences,
well you see, morality is a choice that is independent from logic(although there are simple coincides). By disrespecting your elders you never die. You make a choice to respect your elders. so things that dont affect your existence are relative. You can wear red and I can wear blue, that doesnt kill any of us but we cannot ever believe what denies our common sense like one of us will not die if we cut off our heads.
This is a reallyinteresting discussion :)If morality is simply a discovery process that is related to our "common sense" then it all becomes...highly subjective. One person's common sense could be different from some other person. Without some absolute standard to compare our actions to, morality is simply a shifting quicksand of human subjectivity. You could choose to "respect" your elders, but you wouldn't be able to apply that standard to anyone else if individuals define their own morality.
I didnt say morality has anything to do with common sense. On the contrary I said a true moral must not have logical intentions. Engineering Medicine and logic will save your life but to live perfectly you need a philosophy and values, it has been like that for people. Morality comes from the desire to be rich cultured. people in a certain culture have similar values because they want to seperate themselves from uneducated people in their culture and look upon as a little bit aristocratic..
I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by logical intentions. How can you put philosophy and logic in two different categories?
Because I'm a Christian I believe that morality has its origins in a just God who gives his creatures a conscience. When they act morally, then wealth and culture can follow.
If they decide to make up their own rules through a discovery process, then I would suggest that would you get social Darwinism.
well if something is logical, then it belongs to some theoritical subject as one in which you deduse feuture from present like in economics or deduce new theories from old like in mathematics. Moral Philosophy just tells you how you should chose one out of 2 paths of life. For example, weather you are christian or muslim, Hindu or Buddhist or what ever the case, you cannot die by not following any. Only reason you follow a religon is because of a philosophical reason and not likely logical.
People in Germany and Japan has killed lot of people but they are ever so good at wealth and especialy culture like engineering and logic and they are also humanitarean in 21st century, Japan doesnt make a single nuclear weapon. Ambitious people make a big storm when they rise and later when they made history they can move forward silently. Nobody can be immoral, infact a true evil genius will have a good moral reason to be evil.
Yes, Japan and Germany killed a lot of people in the first half of the 20th century and it lead to destruction on an unimaginable scale. When they decided to again "play by the rules" then they were able to succede economically. This is not to say that evil men like Hitler are not often cunning and may posess remarkable skills or may even sometimes succeed economically. I was wondering if you could explain what you meant in the last sentence. What do you mean by the words "evil" and "immoral"?
well the sort of thing that people in today's devoloped cultures concider evil and immoral. You cannot work immoraly because lot of people will feel oppressed. You cannot grow children in a society that practise genoside no matter how rich cultured you are, Psychology is affected by immorality. Only few people like Hitler can get rid of remorse.
No my friend faith and axiom are two different things. Faith does not use a clock or a meter ruler and faith is not based on measurment. Axioms are based on measurement. You measure something and you figure out what equation will lead you to that measurement , if Y= Mx+c then x is linearly dependent on Y.
But faith is an emotional and nationalist thing.
The final point is that faith will not kill you. But wrong measurements will
But even to measure something you assume that your senses can in fact make sense of the measurements. So in this sense you have to assume yourself. And what about the universe, are my measurements, relative to themselves, the same yesterday, today and tomorrow? My point is that at the very foundation of this you believe something, not because you can proove it from the material world, but because you have to take it for granted in order to make sense of everything else.
well I have a good explanation to your "believing in senses" thing. but you see I dont like saying my whole phillosphy to people before I have established my name around it. I have had the same thouht that we depenent on faith anyways but one day I got the most beautiful explanation. I dont agree with faith theory.
We are modern, thinking reasoning apes, "modern man". We have one savannah, this earth. We can't screw it up - there' s no 'God' to come and bail us out. We have to learn to get along together, and help each other out, and not wreck our environment, which is just ONE air mass to breathe, that belongs to ALL of us. Hugs, screw religious wars, and let's fix this planet, and how we're to live on it and care for each other. Jeff.
You have stated well the big spiritual lie humans can succumb to on this earth. Sentiments lacking in wisdom such as yours have been around since the beginning of time. May I suggest a more serious pursuit of God to make yourself spiritually more mature?

@fuhmeregan Might I respectfully suggest that if we are simply "reasoning apes" and the product of random unintelligent evolutionary process, then we have absolutely no moral obligation to preserve the earth.
Nor is there any reason to value emotions and conditions such as love and peace. In a Goddless world they're simply random biological functions having no more importance than the decomposition of a dead fly.
RitterSportEins 1 year ago
huh...People of scientific minds are the most peace lovers. Terrorists dont fight for science..
goodluckpeace44 1 year ago 2
Oh no, there's nothing wrong with scientists. What I'm saying is that if we believe the universe is simply the result of blind chance then we are merely "reasoning apes" and morality becomes whatever we think it should be. In fact, if everything is random chance, how can we even know what right and wrong are? That's more what I mean. I'm sure there are many peaceful scientists :)
RitterSportEins 1 year ago
well in science no one believes in reason any more. reason is illogical. Immorality affect our existence negatively.
goodluckpeace44 1 year ago
The interesting thing with science is that if one goes far enough back, something must be assumed. In other words, whatever our position, we come with to the table with our "presupositions" or things we take for granted. Even though we cannot prove those things we tend to stick to them "religiously" - that is we believe them on faith.
RitterSportEins 1 year ago
And I agree with you that immorality affects us in a negative way, but if the world is just a product of blind chance, I think we would even have difficulty defining what "negative" is. What's wrong for me could be right for someone else and what is commonly seen as wrong today, could be correct in the further evolved world of tomorrow.
RitterSportEins 1 year ago
well right and wrong are relative. but you have to follow an educated system and study history and come in to a right conclusion. everything is based on our knowladge and experiences,
goodluckpeace44 1 year ago
Are you certain that right and wrong are relative?
RitterSportEins 1 year ago
well you see, morality is a choice that is independent from logic(although there are simple coincides). By disrespecting your elders you never die. You make a choice to respect your elders. so things that dont affect your existence are relative. You can wear red and I can wear blue, that doesnt kill any of us but we cannot ever believe what denies our common sense like one of us will not die if we cut off our heads.
goodluckpeace44 1 year ago
This is a reallyinteresting discussion :)If morality is simply a discovery process that is related to our "common sense" then it all becomes...highly subjective. One person's common sense could be different from some other person. Without some absolute standard to compare our actions to, morality is simply a shifting quicksand of human subjectivity. You could choose to "respect" your elders, but you wouldn't be able to apply that standard to anyone else if individuals define their own morality.
RitterSportEins 1 year ago
I didnt say morality has anything to do with common sense. On the contrary I said a true moral must not have logical intentions. Engineering Medicine and logic will save your life but to live perfectly you need a philosophy and values, it has been like that for people. Morality comes from the desire to be rich cultured. people in a certain culture have similar values because they want to seperate themselves from uneducated people in their culture and look upon as a little bit aristocratic..
goodluckpeace44 1 year ago
My apologies for misquoting you.
RitterSportEins 1 year ago
well if something is logical, then it belongs to some theoritical subject as one in which you deduse feuture from present like in economics or deduce new theories from old like in mathematics. Moral Philosophy just tells you how you should chose one out of 2 paths of life. For example, weather you are christian or muslim, Hindu or Buddhist or what ever the case, you cannot die by not following any. Only reason you follow a religon is because of a philosophical reason and not likely logical.
goodluckpeace44 1 year ago
People in Germany and Japan has killed lot of people but they are ever so good at wealth and especialy culture like engineering and logic and they are also humanitarean in 21st century, Japan doesnt make a single nuclear weapon. Ambitious people make a big storm when they rise and later when they made history they can move forward silently. Nobody can be immoral, infact a true evil genius will have a good moral reason to be evil.
goodluckpeace44 1 year ago
Yes, Japan and Germany killed a lot of people in the first half of the 20th century and it lead to destruction on an unimaginable scale. When they decided to again "play by the rules" then they were able to succede economically. This is not to say that evil men like Hitler are not often cunning and may posess remarkable skills or may even sometimes succeed economically. I was wondering if you could explain what you meant in the last sentence. What do you mean by the words "evil" and "immoral"?
RitterSportEins 1 year ago
well the sort of thing that people in today's devoloped cultures concider evil and immoral.

But wrong measurements will
goodluckpeace44 1 year ago
But even to measure something you assume that your senses can in fact make sense of the measurements. So in this sense you have to assume yourself. And what about the universe, are my measurements, relative to themselves, the same yesterday, today and tomorrow? My point is that at the very foundation of this you believe something, not because you can proove it from the material world, but because you have to take it for granted in order to make sense of everything else.
RitterSportEins 1 year ago
well I have a good explanation to your "believing in senses" thing. but you see I dont like saying my whole phillosphy to people before I have established my name around it.
