I miss the old days of basketball. I was only about 12 or 13 when LJ hit the shot and is still my biggest sports memory of all time. Why can't the NBA be like it was...tough competition throughout the league, players with class and heart...it has lost all the greatness it use to have.
im a knick fan, and after all these years i can finally admit that he didn't get fouled on that three, I can't believe the refs gave us the game haha. thanks referees!!!!
I still remember where I was. This game was on my bday. I was at the mall in foot locker. About 10 of us around the tv. When he hit that the store went nuts.
Practiclt the enitre CITY jumprf up at the same time. I was at a local sports bar. The entire place went into pandamonium. Ill never forget that moment in spacetime. Still gives me chills.
@dickiezf I have to watch this every once in awhile it still gives me goosebumps. When is the last time the garden shook like that. It's been too fucking long.
@dickiezf I have to watch this every once in awhile it still gives me goosebumps. When is the last time the garden shook like that? It's been too fucking long.
The only play I can even think of that would compare to this was a Duke game with Jason Williams I think they played Indiana but Jason Williams missed the free throw to tie the game. The odds of this happening it's rare to see a 4 point play any game.
I miss these series they were so awsome just like watching the Giants beating the Patriots in the superbowl but every game. The Bulls, Pacers, and the Heat no rings but the fights/games. The hatred when the Knicks played in Miami Starks giving the fans the finger unbelievable! This was my favorite moment it was just unfuckingbelievable.
I've always regretting and been ashamed at myself during this play, I turned the TV off as I had to be going ... thinking it was over. I only realized later when someone was talking about it ... I was like HUH!??? No way, ... then ........ SAAAWEEEEEEEEEETTTT!
i watched this on TV and i just remember what everyone else remembers and its the top view of the Garden and the crowd BLOWING up literally. i hated the pacers, so when this happened, oh my god, i got chills, i was yelling, jumping up and down. its was one of the best memories of all my years of playing and watching basketball.
Didn't matter if he wasn't even guarded, they were gonna call a foul on that no matter what...thats the NBA for ya...no other team other than the lakers would get that foul
I remember watching this game on tv when I was 10. I jumped up off my seat along with the Garden when he hit that shot. And I clearly remember LJ telling his teammates to calm down because he's got to hit that free throw. Some memories just stay with you forever.
Next to the Giants Shawshank Reception. (Manning to Tyree) that's one of the best plays in NY sports history. God I love being a knick fan. I miis those days. I sure wish Patrick had gotten a ring.
People don't realize is that THOSE playoff games WERE the NBA championship. I remember watching this at a local resturant. Not a sports bar amd the whole place exploded.
i miss this time in nba bbal..especilly knicks basketball..donnie walsh should be ashamed of himself for letting the team be such a disaster in the 200's..back then they had gritty players that really went with the identity of the team ..now its lets be horrible and pray 4 lebron look at camby at 7:50 classic
Great, great team and unforgettable moment. I was disappointed that the mayor of NYC didn't give '99 Knicks a parade. I think they really deserve it even after they lost the finals. All he cared about were his freakin' Yanks. The tremendous battle, hard work and camaraderie was one the best!
RandySWilson = FAIL. You are clearly not a Pacer fan. No true Pacer fan has or would ever say something so batshat insane. I understand Knick fans being blind to the clearly erroneous call - after all, I would never say that Reggie fouled MJ prior to that last second three in 98. But you don't have to join them. Maybe you should go find a $5000 a month closet-apartment and eat some soggy cardboard pizza. You'll feel right at home.
Not a bad idea, but too much time on the clock, allen. I think if you foul him, and he hits both, the pressure is on the pacers to hit their freethrows, as the knicks would surely foul them right after as well.... take away about 1.5seconds to 2 seconds for each foul, and it would be like 7-8 seconds, Knick ball and a now, a possible 2 or even one-point game.... in the garden.
I was there wit a friend of mine, scalped tickets to sec 407, moved down to 204 in the fourth got lucky as 2 seats either didn't show up or went home early. When he hit this shot we literally DOVE over our seats onto 2 female knick fans behind us, (one of em had red hair I remember) Puff Daddy ran onto the court wavin the orange and blue towel and it was absolute madness. After the game the drunken chant was JEFF VAN GUNDY! goin down the escalators. Knicks not supposed to win this one, but did.
Greatest play in Knick history. I remember watching that game on tv and jumping up along with the crowd as he hit it. JVG was right, it does send chills down my back too
Come on Knicks, bring New York basketball back baby!!!
I remember that game, I have never felt anything like the joy I felt that day since. It felt like you cheated death, I was exhausted like I was on the damn court. And than for it to be against the Pacers?! Forget about it, that was real basketball.
yeah, yeah, that was nice and all.......... but he wasn't f'n fouled, pacers got robbed just like the phantom fouls against them in the 2000 finals f*** the big markets we should've had a ring
Dude...As a Pacer Fan I can understand your pain when this happened but at the same time he was fouled clearly in the arm as he was in motion before he started to shoot. Its called continuation and what really happened was it was a late whistle
i was 11 years old. sitting in front of the tv when i seen this play. the feeling i had when that happen, idk if i'll ever feel the same way ever again for one single moment. greatest knick moment ever. i get chills when i watch this video. lebron & knicks in 10'
Never seen anything like it. The Garden never reacted in that fashion to anything not even when the Rangers won the cup in 1994 after 54 years of waiting and considering how that place can rock and roll that is saying a lot.
For those who don't understand why people like sports and get so connected and hooked on teams, well those people just need to watch this and I think all misunderstandings will be clarified. When that moment happened time stood still. All who were watching were transported away from reality and just became a part of a single moment in time when nothing else mattered but that exact moment, Knicks fan or not.
I was at this game as a child. I was 12, sitting in section 346, my dad told me lets go near the exit to start beating traffic but we'll watch the end from there. I said whatever fine, there was alot of people doing this as well. He made the shot and it was the most insane thing I had ever been apart on, strangers were hugging and high 5'ving after the game people were running outside the garden screaming LJ!! It was the best game I had ever been to.
I mean. Probably it's because Industry took over passion. 82 games a year + playoffs. Every year since...I forgot 1950? Obviously, even I got bored...or rather fed up.
I agree. This was when basketball was good. Now it's just a bunch of highschoolers who can dunk but cant shoot or play defense for shit. Oh yeah who was the dick head who fouled him?
this was the biggest load of crap play ever. Was fouled way before the shot. He had enough time to plant both feet square up to shoot his entire normal shot routine....all while after the foul! BS
thats going a bit far but their is no question that he was a phenom, who would have been better had it not been for those serious injuries that took away much of his athleticism
btw, i realized when he was talking about after the shot, he's got a great narrating voice. i like Matthew Modine, but Gus Johnson would've been cooler to read for this clip.
If u put up the Top 25 moments in New York sports history, this moment would be number 25 cause the reaction from the crowd, that reaction was louder than Aaron Boone hitting the home run against the Red Sox
I was pretty young when I saw this, probably around 12. I was at a BBQ with my family. Everyone at the party was inside watching the game, going nuts. All the hot dogs got burnt.
this was the game where i won the dress dribble and shoot contest on the garden floor...season tickets since i was 2...won it when i was six...16 now and still have the tickets
Thats when the KNICKS had HEART ! Now we have a SOFT team and a Coach who doesn't teach DEFENSE? Im a life long Knick fan, so Im preparing myself for another losing season. Eddie Curry YOUR a BUM, your soft. Starbury, your also soft like starburst.
I'm a NY sports fan, and I miss the days when the Knicks were great. I was a kid during the Ewing/Starks days, and I miss them. The Knicks have fallen off from being on the level with the Yankees, Giants, and Rangers. Success could bring them back, but my anger at the Dolans and the franchise for keeping with Isiah for so long make me doubt I'll ever again love the Knicks as I did during the days of the LJ 4-point play.
What a play...one of the best NY sports moments ever.
Thank you so much for the video. I remember I was a young dude when this happened and I literally felt like jumping out the window because I thought I could fly.
It was a great call. He beat his man plain and simple. They always tell you dont leave your feet for that exact same reason. He made a head fake the guy left his feet and fouled him. He still had his hand on LJ's hip when he released the ball..
back when the knicks were real men. LJ, oak, mase, starks and ewing should slap the shit out of the current knicks for disgracing the uniform. makes me so sad. :(
The corporate hacks who have raped the Knicks franchise need to be fired. Seeing where we were and where we are makes a moment as sweet as this bitter, and that should never be the case.
I remember this exact play....I was a die hard pacers fan.....sigh

The Best Basketball moment in MSG History!
#1 LJ's 4 Point Play
#2 Willis Reed playing in Game 7 of '70 Finals
#3 Ewing's Tip Dunk in Game 7 of '94 ECF
#4 Reggie's 8 Points in a few seconds in Game 1 of '95 ECSF
#5 Jordans dunk on Ewing in the '91 ECQF
I could write on forever but they're the moments that stick in my mind from the Garden.

It was a great moment for LJ and I'm happy he made the shot but a bad moment for NBA refs again making a bad call when a game is on the line.
rneville3 3 years ago
It was a great call. He beat his man plain and simple. They always tell you dont leave your feet for that exact same reason. He made a head fake the guy left his feet and fouled him. He still had his hand on LJ's hip when he released the ball..

why did LJ play only one more season after this one?? he suddenly retired from the nba n i still remember how fuckin sad i was when he left
omm85 3 years ago
he said he retired because of his back problems which were affecting his game

I fucking hate Thomas he ruined the knicks and all the garbage players they picked up..... they need to get OJ mayo in the draft if hes still around
tammyjzz409 3 years ago
Where did that come from
DaveTheMan1234567890 3 years ago
back when the knicks were real men.

I love the Knicks more than anybody, and I'm say that winning this game means more than losing to the Spurs.

That is ranked no 14 in MSG history, other sports such as boxing are included in the ranking. Not to mention other events as well.
