PS. what in the WORLD is the name of this album? Ellington's records had beautiful fidelity and sound quality after the mid-50s...I thought I had most of the records from that period but I guess I was wrong.
@JHSpring26 and @pyro09196 - This piece of music was commissioned by 20th Century Fox specifically for the 1944 movie entitled "Laura", which was based on the book of the same name authored by Vera Caspary. It was composed by David Raksin, and was the first work to bring him fame outside of his own industry.
I regret to tell you, but the music has nothing to do with Judy Garland. ;-)
Anyway, I recommend the film not only for the music but the gorgeous lighting.
@Nataspam Just wanted to let you know your uncle is a musicial god to me. Listening to this one track and his interpretation of this song, you probably already know why (p.s. I'm a rock guitarist of all things).
5 stars for this montage and sublime music! Cole Porter once said that LAURA was the #1 song that he wished he'd written but didn't. This chart for Paul was added to Duke's library around '56. A good live version I recommend is the CD "Hot Summer Dance" taped at Mather AFB in CA, 1960.
The beauty of Gene Tierney, the great emotions the images of the movie evokes, the sophistication of Duke Ellington. The hypnotic melody and lyrics of Murcer and Raskin. The film, the song, even in sensuality. always beautiful.
Yeah, it was originally entitled "Judy." Originally Otto Preminger wanted to use Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" but chose to use David Raksin's "Judy" what was changed to "Laura" It's such a beautiful song.
Thank you for letting the world know of this extraordinary unwittiing meeting of David Raksin, the composer of this unbearably rich melody, and Paul Gonsalvez, whom I did not know until now. I wonder if Billy Strayhorn contributed to the arrangement.
The Golden Age .......Before the current dumbing-down ..."
Yes, sir,
Also where I'm from!
Thank you P J for saying what a lot of us think and thanks especially to Jazzart1 for treating us to this this sensual treat. HA! Not the usual S** word, so there!
@PervisJohnson : the face of Gene Tierney, perhaps the most beautiful American woman of the last century. Hollywood at its finest, with director Otto Preminger. Here, the Ellington band at its mellow best, and Gonsalvez working wonders on tenor. And finally, the solitary genius of the composer, David Raksin.
Raksin,Ellington,Gonsalvez,Tierney,all in one package!
We are truly blessed.

Wonderful! It doesn't get any better than this. Paul was a true giant - vastly underated. And, what can I say about Duke's band?!
