I believe the beauty of a well structured song like this is that it can be interpreted as a message about faith - religiously or secularily. I can handle it both ways but I am a christian so that just adds another dimension for me. What a song! What a musician! What a gift!

Good song and good video sir, but if you pay attention to the lyrics you can see specifically that he refers to lost faith in the church, which is Jesus by extension.

You could argue perhaps that he believes in Jesus the man, but not the Christ that the church has made him into. Referring to the bible in your description of the video thus doesn't make a lot of sense, because Sting specifically says he's lost his belief in the church.

I've love this tune, but never listened to the lyrics, until now. He may be singing about a girl in his life. But now, I believe it's something deeper ... Our Lord Jesus Christ, Especially when he mentions 'losing faith in progress, the Holy Church, Politicians & the miracle of science turning from a blessing to a curse'. It may be true that entertainers use 'Emotion' to touch people, but UNBEKNOWNST to them, GOD may be using them to Reach the People who may never KNOW HIM any other way.

It's true that music is what you make of it, but as far as Sting's interpretation it is clear that he is making the point that science, religion, and military might are not where he places his faith. He goes out of his way to point out the downfall of each of these organized belief systems.

Frankly, I never realized how much he appreciated the human condition to the point of losing all hope if he were to lose his faith in humanity (A person, A people, etc.)

I read a lot of talk about the contextual relevance of this song so let me say this; Sting is an entertainer he writes songs for people to hear them. He like, many other entertainers use their emotional connections to touch people (most musicians will) ;me being a musician, I would hope I could also do that. If I were to play this tune I would relate it to Jesus Christ, sting is obviously singing it to someone he loves (if you believe that emotional connection) I love Jesus, thats the relevance.

I can understand people disagreeing with this because Sting is far from religious. In fact, I think he is Buddhist. However, if Sting has lost all of his faith and place it on a human, that would make him the most stupid man on earth.

I've always thought of the song the same way. Jesus is the only rock in this world that you can put your full faith in. God's gracecan sustain a person when literally nothing in this world can.
