It says europe's heaviest smokers, but in fact it's the world's. Shame cos the greek life expectancy is quite high, I reckon it could be the highest in the world if they stopped smoking!
@22poopoo You are correct regarding Greek life expectancy but also they have one of the lowest incidences of so called 'smoke related diseases! Have you EVER considered the clear paradox?
Heavy smoking Greeks live LONGER than those who live in low smoking rate countries? -More smokers BUT less smoke related disease!
In the developed world smoking has reduced by at least a half BUT cancer prevalence has never been greater and is rapidly INCREASING - Requires the application of logic!
@kindog101 Yeah, I think the true paradox is that they eat a lot of fat, same as the french. This notion that fat is bad is bollocks! Fat is good, incluiding saturated. I'm half greek, my auntie always has a ciggi in her hand, and she doesn't even have a smokers cough, she puts it down to eating lots of pulses and the rest of her diet, no microwave, mostly organic, plenty of best greek olive oil and lemon juice. Also she says she "half inhales". 65 and no smoking related problems!
Today it's banning smoking, tomorrow who knows what dictatorship laws will be placed upon us where our freedom of choices are taken away from us.
I would rather be in a room amongst smokers rather than amongst rude, obnoxious & violent drunks at a pub...but drinking alchohol is still legal. There are way more alchohol related deaths in the world than cigarette smoking deaths!
By the way, I'm practicing my freedom of speech, or has that been taken away from us as well?
Personally I am a non smoker but I am not sure I agree with this ban. I don't want to see Greece turned into the UK where smokers are treated as an underclass.
But like you point out, the law probably wont be enforced so this could be a lot of hot air about nothing.
im greek and i would like greece to turn into "another UK" concerning that section . Smoking is an egoistic habbit where the smoker knows that he/she hurts the people surrounding him but in greece he still demands to have the first word and be respected while not respecting himslef either
well, I 'm Greek and live in the UK, if there is something that I don't miss about Greece, it's going out for a drink and then stink like a tobacco factory. OK I am a non-smoker but friends of mine who do smoke feel the same (well, most of them).
I don't think this is going to work for Greece though, indeed as
thasoukopswtokefali siad, Greeks always find some magical way to avoid such rules..
@217ify they might not enjoy it but at least they respect me when I do not wish to breathe their smoke! And the weather is not that bad, in my very greek opinion 217ify.
@217ify oh trust me I 've lived in both countries and I have experienced -25 in Greece while in the UK only -10 one month ago! And if I can survive waiting for the bus for 10 mins or more outside in the cold every day then everybody can when they want to smoke.
I don't smoke stupid .......and I'm greek

Please greece stop smoking

40% feels very low really. I always thought smokers outnumbered non-smokers here!
Not much will change after July 1st I'm afraid. Greeks always find ways to get around rules.
I'd been a smoker for 15 years but quit in January.

We'll see I guess!

@Shoegalle Right, I'm sure your smoking friends enjoy having to leave their drinks and go stand outside in the nasty British weather.
I hope you're right that it won't "work" for Greece.

@Shoegalle No, it'a a well-known fact that Britain is a tropical paradise, especially at this time of year!

@Shoegalle Not really a question of survival, but of enjoyment. And of being treated like a leper.
