@UltimateAnonymous The focus of our project is specifically to see how reliable and efficient biometric authentication can be on a modern mobile phone - nothing more. We chose the N900 purely because it was easy to program and had a camera on the front (unlike the iPhone 3G for example), making it the most appropriate mobile platform for our research. I don't doubt that it can do much more than what we've shown.
@UltimateAnonymous A) Its not a gimmick, its a research project, and, B) Its not Symbian, its Maemo which is essentially Linux, which is why developers like it so much. Plus its got some serious hardware inside it, one of which is a Arm A8, which is running at tick over (600mhz) but which can be overclocked to over 1Ghz (1.15). Its seriously capable and seriously the dark horse of the smart phone world. All apps are free. See maemo.org for some indication of apps.
@PFDominique it does not rotate twice. You can see that the head in the video points at the left egde (right and bottom ones as well) of the screen actually only once. However, you might think that video is rotating twice because there are two rotations: video itself and physical rotation of the device.
@pbnan watch the video while he rotates the phone - his head is right-side-up while the keyboard is beneath the screen. As the keyboard gets to the top of the video, above the screen, the head is again right-side-up in the video. That's a 180 rotation of the phone, but a 360 rotation of the video playing on the phone. It happens uniformly again as he rotates the phone back to right-side-up; the inner video does another full 360.
@PFDominique just try rotating your head concurrently with the screen. You'll see that the video is rotating once. As I said, there are two rotations. First is the rotation of camera in Nokia which causes rotation of the face in the video. The second rotation is the rotation of the screen. One 720° rotation of the face is combined of those two.
@pbnan PFDominique is right - with the phone upside down, my head is upside down in the image but because the phone is upside down too, my face appears upright. Whatever rotation you see in the image is double the rotation of the phone. It is an interesting effect, though - well spotted.

is there source code available somewhere? I worked with AAM and ASM before so this is quite fascinating for me to see on the N900 =)

@ssjtoma I'm afraid not at this stage. There are some licensing issues to work out first :o(

Being a long time Nokia and symbian user...this is all they could come up with? Some stupid biometrics gimmick?

@360NextLevel Not sure at the moment - this is very much a prototype. Maybe when it's a bit more polished...

Why does the video in the phone rotate twice for one rotating of the phone itself during the 360 rotation?

@ptresadern that's what I was trying to explain. The video rotates once, but with the rotation of the phone, the video seems to rotate twice.
